As you might know from his published work at HODINKEE, Gear Patrol, and elsewhere, and from The Grey Nato podcast (which he co-hosts with HODINKEE’s James Stacey) Jason’s take on watches is a bit different. Most of us who own dive watches will probably do nothing riskier with them than go snorkeling, but for Jason, a dive watch is a tool of the trade. A samurai sword is a beautiful object but to this day, the acid test for one made by a master artisan is still tameshigiri, or test-cutting. The first question is not, “is it beautiful?” but rather, “does it work?” and that’s the question every watch Jason’s dived with has to answer.

When I got my submariner I had never worn a watch in the water. After getting this watch I went on my honeymoon and did some snorkeling in the Florida keys and wore my sub for that adventure. It was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in nature. Seeing all the different fish and life under the water and being able to keep track of how long we had been out there and seeing the watch under the water was completely different than it being on wrist for daily life.

Goodness I need to get my dive watch wet. Scurfa Diver One 500m with helium escape valve. And I feel better about having a diver on a bund strap. Fabulous interview. Cheers.

And this is why you buy lifelong pieces. Whether it’s watches, cameras,cars…one day you will be older and these items will bring back memories. At least that’s why I tell my wife I need a submariner😂 Book ordered.

The 14060m is the last of the true Rolex tool watches IMHO. After that it was all ceramic and bling. Those watches were probably close to sub-$6000 when he bought it. Great piece! LOL @ the "fencing scar" reference....funny how they also made a lot of appearances in the U.S. space program...another of Jack's interests. LOL!

Could you get your hands on the version of the Master Control JLC that is a sector dial? Been looking for one for my brother for big birthday. It's his dreamwatch. I can't find any online or much information or reviews pertaining to it. Would love a review of it. I trust you guys.
