As you might know from his published work at HODINKEE, Gear Patrol, and elsewhere, and from The Grey Nato podcast (which he co-hosts with HODINKEE’s James Stacey) Jason’s take on watches is a bit different. Most of us who own dive watches will probably do nothing riskier with them than go snorkeling, but for Jason, a dive watch is a tool of the trade. A samurai sword is a beautiful object but to this day, the acid test for one made by a master artisan is still tameshigiri, or test-cutting. The first question is not, “is it beautiful?” but rather, “does it work?” and that’s the question every watch Jason’s dived with has to answer.

Came back to this after getting into the Grey Nato pod that Jason hosts with James Stacey. So happy I did, so awesome to see, hear and learn about his collection as well as conservation.
I own a Citizen Aqualand and it is the best! I absolutely love it.
Professional people do professional things and use professional tools.
This is such a great video — well done !!
This was outstanding. Jason is a good dude.
I've never heard this guy not mention his wife he must be obsessed with her .
Jacques Cousteau was on TV and dive computers were a few years away when I got my certification at 17. Now that I need to commemorate my retirement, it's Doxa.
Most of these divers aren't my thing, but I can appreciate the stories behind them.
Great episode
I've got a 1983 cwc diver in my collection. Really underrated watch
I don’t care who the guest is, if they’re a true enthusiast the content is gold. This is the proof in the pudding!
Diving with vintage dive watches is very cool and super rare (understandably)
This is a great talking watches.
Agree that Jack should be the talking watches guy.
His collection, by his own words, is a weird mish-mash … Ha! I see an amazing collection!
When I got my submariner I had never worn a watch in the water. After getting this watch I went on my honeymoon and did some snorkeling in the Florida keys and wore my sub for that adventure. It was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in nature. Seeing all the different fish and life under the water and being able to keep track of how long we had been out there and seeing the watch under the water was completely different than it being on wrist for daily life.
Goodness I need to get my dive watch wet. Scurfa Diver One 500m with helium escape valve. And I feel better about having a diver on a bund strap. Fabulous interview. Cheers.
Do guys like him have jobs? I mean real once…. Cause novelist and adventurer is not a job 😂 great guy anyways, i don't ask in a bad way really i can't figure out how this guy makes his living 😂
Dive watch fan this in now my favorite "Talking with watches"!
And this is why you buy lifelong pieces. Whether it’s watches, cameras, cars…one day you will be older and these items will bring back memories. At least that’s why I tell my wife I need a submariner😂 Book ordered.
great collection and stories. Very refreshing from the usual big brands
Great episode 👏
Truely inspiring! Great collection Jason. The No-date Sub is my unicorn watch.
Wrist check on Jack: A Bvlgari Aluminium on the left and an Apple Watch on the right?
The 14060m is the last of the true Rolex tool watches IMHO. After that it was all ceramic and bling. Those watches were probably close to sub-$6000 when he bought it. Great piece! LOL @ the "fencing scar" reference….funny how they also made a lot of appearances in the U.S. space program…another of Jack's interests. LOL!
I’ll never understand why people like Bremont. 🗑
Awesome collection. He has a blancpain as well. Timely reminder of environmental conservation
Anyone know what that clear case table clock behind jack is?
I LIKE THIS GUY TRUE DIVER AND WATCH COLLECTER
Don't get me wrong, I love Tim Mosso, but this interview pretty much negates everything he always says about not swimming with a vintage dive watch. I feel like I just got slapped in the face!
Now we need an episode with James Stacey.
Great conversation with a thoughtful collector.
What brand of shirt is Jason wearing? please and thank you!
No date Rolex subs are the classic dive watch. You don't need to know the day of the month when you're worried about minutes of O2.
So how does this work, the whole Hodinkee camera team drives to this guy and then they make a zoom call?!
There's nothing quite as sweet as a quirkily distinct Tudor Submariner with Snowflake hands.
Could you get your hands on the version of the Master Control JLC that is a sector dial? Been looking for one for my brother for big birthday. It's his dreamwatch. I can't find any online or much information or reviews pertaining to it. Would love a review of it. I trust you guys.
Possibly the best talking watches yet. That black dial Doxa is amazing.
Sounds like Bremont was a product placement.
Does anyone else pull out there watches and pretend to do an episode of talking watches with your Casio’s, Timex’s, and Seiko alone in your kitchen?
