who were highly uncomfortable with the way he filmed themto do.It shows, once again, that you know NOTHING about what you're talking about. How about next time you try to reach out to the community you're trying to talk about? And let's be clear, I'm mad because many teenagers, including queer ones, watch your channel and will listen to your recommendations, and therefore might watch this movies assuming that's they're romantic and a good representation when it's actually bad and dangerous.
The absolute best queer storytelling and representation has happened outside of cinema.
Television shows like Pose and Orange is the New Black have all got better storylines than movies like Call me by your name and love Simon. Because 1 of those movies a grooming movie since Elio is 17 and Oliver is 24. That’s a massive issue. And the other movie is just a sugarcoated coming out story. Pose shows the opposite reaction of coming out as Damon in season 1 HAD to come out. Understand that. He HAD to, he didn’t get the courage to finally do it in his own time he HAD to because he was outed by his fathers friends. He is then thrown out the house and disowned. Pose didn’t sugarcoat ANYTHING, it showed us the actual real life dangers of living openly as a queer person.
Orange is the New Black showed us how life is like living in prison as a black trans woman and a gay woman. The character of Sam Healy is incredibly homophobic towards the women in the prison specifically Piper and Big Boo throwing Piper in the SHU and calling Big Boo the “worst” one. He’s also extremely misogynistic and sexist towards his wife who happens to be someone he PURCHASED online as if she was an object. Hmmmmm ewww and the shows overarching theme is racial discrimination in the prison system and the privilege that inherently carries.
Pose and Orange is the New Black has authentic representation anyway with actual queer people behind the camera so take that into consideration. The reason why this video exists is because of the heteronormativity that the movie industry places on the LGBTQ community and the need for representation.
Representation is important but AUTHENTIC representation is vital and those movies ain’t it.
