It's done, it's gone. GarageGames, the company of Torque Game Engine has been shutdown as of this week. After more then a decade, this truly marks the end of what was once a great running company with Indie games. I hope there will be a community out there that will 'illegally' save those engines and develop them further.

Folks might think I'm nuts, but the games I find most impressive in this video are made with TGE and TGEA, using a stylized look. Even today.

When TGE and TGEA were current, graphics tech was far more limited, and so a good looking game relied on solid art and art direction, both of which hold up much better over time than fancy shader technologies. Believe it or not, UE5's most impressive demos today will look dated just a handful of years from now. Meanwhile, good artwork from 10 years ago will still look good.

"Over The Hedge" looks great to me. Both Penny Arcade games look great to me. Metal Drift looks great. And on and on. Villagers & Heroes, a MMO that was originally made with TGEA (but not shown here, or I missed it lol) looked great. They translated it to Torque3D later, and it still looks great; less so because of the engine, and more because of solid art direction and design.

Everything lately seems to be about having "the most realistic looking" engine, and it's so boring. I see reality every time I walk out my door. Give me some fantastical, imaginary places to explore. Give me a solid art style and design over fancy bleeding-edge tech any day.

It's too bad TGEA and TGE are basically "dead engines" now, due to all kinds of ownership weirdness. If I could hook up with other license owners still interested to work with either, I'd love to create something.
