The Xbox 360 went from concept to release in under two years—an incredibly fast turnaround for a gaming console. Surprisingly, Sony inadvertently contributed to the research and development of the CPU chip that Microsoft would later use in their next-generation console. This video dives into the wild and rushed development cycle of the Xbox 360, exploring how Microsoft managed to not only compete with but also surpass the PlayStation 3 in key areas like online gaming, developer support, and overall market share.
During the intense console wars of the mid-2000s, Microsoft capitalized on Sony’s missteps with the PlayStation 3’s high price and complex architecture. Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 dominated with a strong game library featuring exclusives like Halo 3 and Gears of War, along with a robust Xbox Live experience that outperformed PlayStation Network in its early years. However, the success of the Xbox 360 didn’t come without challenges, as Microsoft faced one of the biggest hardware failures in gaming history with the infamous Red Ring of Death.
This video covers how Microsoft learned from the original Xbox, secured developer support, and pushed innovations that shaped the gaming industry. We’ll also look at how Sony responded with the PlayStation 3, and how this rivalry set the stage for the next generation with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Whether you were team Xbox or PlayStation, the battle between these two consoles left a lasting impact on gaming history.

Great watch!!
The last great console imo. Seeing games transformed into HD with an insane graphics overhaul. Going from a CRT to a 720P HDTV was mind blowing. I picked up a 32 inch LCD at clearance from Walmart for $500 in 2005.
They literally had Xbox series S and Xbox series X strategy before the Xbox one, but the lower end was upgradeable to higher end. Now where do you find a console that’s upgradeable to its higher end counterpart
The 360 was the undeniable king of video game consoles back in the day. Everyone I knew had one.
well since xbox is really a pc in disguise of a console & xbox are made from 100% pc parts it's no wonder 360 was made within 2 years. even the OG xbox was made in 1year
an actual "true" console would take many years to develop.
anyway wish xbox 360 / 720 would come back because series x/s is boring as hell to play on. absolute BORING
Consoles nowadays are crap mid-end PCs, the only reasonable reason to have them is for exclusive games.
It's funny, they fought hard but sony won anyway.
One interesting thing about the Xbox 360's development, the first Dev Kits Microsoft used for the console were Power Mac G5's, as high-end Apple hardware at the time used PowerPC processors that were similar enough for Microsoft to buy hundreds of units to test out code for before actual Xbox 360 hardware could be utilised for such things.
Just a quick correction:Android was the one who actually started the app store thing in phones. It was originally called the market
The competition was real back then. Now GPU manufacturers are sabotaging game development to force consumers to buy GPUs at outrageous prices!
Sad to see what Microsoft has become. Xbox is trash, Windows 11 is a mess and MS Office is a yearly cost and worse than it's ever been. They only dominate the PC gaming because we have no other options.
Someone should make those concept cases
Last generation of consoles to have any personality. Consoles were actually an experience; they were fun to use.
MS was handed that generation on a platter and in typical MS fashion they pissed it away so hard by the end.
For a second I thought the video was gonna be under two years long lmao
just found this channel, great video dude i subbed
Ultimately Nintendo created them both
Bro xbox didnt win ps3/360 era 😂😂 sony managed to outsale xbox at the end, and they had big bangers of game sony had the last laugh and specialy after ps3 slim that was the hit
3:48 Microsoft got the chip that Sony helped design before Sony.
AND the RROD, the worst manufacturing failure of home consoles ever imo.
PS3 also had ylod but it was less frequent
2:40 so actually the Cell Processor Project started in 2001, Sony-IBM-Toshiba build the alliance in 2001 called STI And Cell Processor Development started In 2001 and finished in end of 2004, it worthed all 3 company's a total of 500 million Dolars, Cell a 9 Cores Cpu with 3.2Ghz, 234 Million Transistors build at 90 nanometers in 2006, achieving 230 Gflops At Fp32 single Precision, it was a monster at 2006, being just like for example 9 Top High End Single Core Cpus from 2005 Together, as Example of the Pentiun 4 640 3.2Ghz times 9, or just 2x Core 2 Quad Q6600 at Oc 3.2Ghz which will deliver 204 Gflops.
Volume too low
And then they ruined it all with the Xbox 1
Excellent video! But a small correction at 12:10
The Xbox 360 has no "graphics card", because a graphics card is an external circuit board that houses a GPU, while the 360's GPU sits on the actual motherboard.
Sony helped the NES as we'll 👍,
12:24 “My name is Ballmer”
Interesting that sony incidentally helped microsoft back then.
But hey so did nintendo.
As they incidentally helped sony with their own standalone playstation by simply canceling their whole snes CD-rom addon project🥲
So here we are.
this video is simply fantastic.
What a shame. Xbox 360 really was all the hype back in the day. But these days their consoles are so boring, you might as well just buy a pc or nintendo.
I think they will follow the same philosophy, that's why they will either release their next generation Xbox in 2026 or 2027, while Sony will only release the PS6 in 2028.
According to the sources not only the next generation Xbox will play all games that works on the XSX [OG, 360, XONE, XSX] but it will have have the Steam Store, so basically we will be able to download, install and play our Steam labrary native on this next generation Xbox.
It won't be full Windows but the Steam games will be set with a factory preset configuration just like when we install Steam games on the Steam deck. While the native Xbox games will be standard consoles games developed for this next generation Xbox system.
4:36 NFS mw 05 mentioned.
This feels like a video from 2011 — 2013 and it's awesome
The 7th gen was BY FAR the biggest leap in technology going from PS2 toy cars and Gameboy Advance to the DS and PSP with Wi-fi and 360 with photorealistism
Video at the end is a bit dated. Looks like Microsoft is going to be making a hybrid console and handheld. These devices will have access to Xbox games through their store and GamePass. The big thing is having other launchers like Steam, Epic etc. This will allow massive library of games in one place. This also includes playing PlayStation games on a Xbox.
its insane how long xbox 360 ran and the gpu was relevant for so long too for games til 2017-18. got rise of tomb raider too on it the 2nd game. while shadow of mordor on ps3 was absolutely s**t
Xbox, especially Xbox 360, have always been the better choice. I didn't realize this until i got my Xbox One so i could play Halo MCC when it was released.
Ever since then, my PS3 and PS4 consoles have mostly been collecting dust.
They both lost to the Wii, and both lost to the Switch, don’t forget that
This video was solid! Thank you for your work!
Awesome video
The vids are great, i would love more especially like this.
Brilliant video❤ liked and subbed. Might I ask you… What’s the music name at 01:00?
12:53 that is one sweaty mf
Remember when RAM was EXTREMELY expensive? 512 mb of ram for a console is crazy. Today you can get 16 gigs for like 25 bucks. When I built my first pc in 2010 I remember paying something like 130-150 for a whopping 8 gigs between 2 4 gig sticks.
What is impressive on a 2 year "turnaround" (you mean development I guess) of a console that does not work? I can do that in one day. It failed with a error called RROD (Red Ring of Death). It was a major fail – probably one of the biggest fails in the history of computing, producing this waste, make Microsoft lose billions and make them look like amateurs. They rushed the product and sold it to honest people – crap that they did not test or deliberatly sold even if they knew it failed in testing on the production lines. It was the worst example on what NOT to do in mass production.
Yo
your presentation skills are great! earned a sub ✨✨
Please make a Video about THE FINALS
They did all this, just to put all their games on PlayStation.
I wish Xbox was still competitive to Sony. The fact that they aren't just means Sony will get more and more complacent like they did in the PS3 era. And it'll only get worse.
