Proof is in the pudding. It won't sell well. Why do you think they put the games everywhere in the first place.
Gamepass was their main selling point, its now secondary to game sales.
One point your missing in your argument is government legislation. As much as Microsoft claim they allow rival store fronts are for our benefit. Its more likely that next gen will be digital only. So would fall under anti consumer laws like the EU's Digital Markets Act.

With Xbox multiplat strategy they’ve already let go of the main selling points of the hardware. If the platform is open (with steam) there is literally no incentive for people to buy off the Xbox or MS store, which means there’s no storefront revenue.
So Xbox would be trying to release profitable hardware which means they are releasing a much more expensive hardware device compared to the completion: ps. Without volume and store front subsidizing the hardware, what is the actual point of the hardware. Make steam more popular?
