Defunct Games reviews Ashwalker: A Survival Journey by Nameless XIII, available now on PC.

Ashwalkers may be slow and plodding, but it’s also haunting and mesmerizing. It’s a confident debut from developer Nameless XIII, offering up a unique world that you’ll want to walk through dozens of times. The gorgeous black and white graphics certainly stand out, but they don’t overshadow the fun survival gameplay and intriguing world building. Unfortunately, the repetitive level designs and frustrating bugs are holding Ashwalkers back from greatness. It’s worth playing for the visuals and memorable storytelling, but I’m not sure how many people will want to walk through ash 34 times to see every single ending.

... you suggested this game could benefit from procedurally generated levels. Obviously, there are many games that use that mechanic. Are there other games you think should use it or games that should not?

Well, if you think about it, Lord of the Rings is a Walking Simulator. Shoot, in the second one, even the trees walked. 😉😂 And 34? Imagine doing a Game Over video on this one. Dang. But in all seriousness, does sound interesting, and yeah, hopefully future updates fix the bugs. As for the question, first one I could think of off the top of my head was Mad Max, so think I'll go with that.

QotD: SOMA by far! ♥ I guess it could also be described as a "walking sim" kinda game, even more with the "Safe mode" added.

Reminds me of that ubisoft game, I Am Alive.
QOTD : I wanted to say, Asura's Wrath. But that is not post apocalyptic as it's set 86 million years before Street Fighter 2.

Anarchy Reigns however definitely fits the criteria. And being as its probably one of the most underrated games of the past 10 years, it wins today.

Then again, WWE Crush Hour! That's a game that totally suits a post pandemic apocalypse.

The way I view walking simulators is this: A true walking simulator is not a video game, but there is nothing wrong with not being a video game. It is simply a story or experience, but there is no game in it. They are valid as a medium, though, like choose-your-own adventures.

Walking simulators are crap and everyone knows it. If they were good, if they succeeded in what they set out to do; they would've earned a different sobriquet. The fact they're incredibly easy to make, and are generally a barebones experience with little-to-nothing happening, also doesn't go amiss. And whether the creator was or wasn't, is irrelevant; because they all come across as lazy, low-effort drek that a talentless loser hacked out

Maybe someday a walking simulator that will realise all the 'potential' of the genre will appear one day, but up to this point, they're all garbage
