Review: RayStorm x RayCrisis HD Collection (PlayStation 4 & Switch) – Defunct Games

by admin

Defunct Games reviews RayStorm x RayCrisis HD Collection by ININ Games, available now on PlayStation 4 and Switch.

Like the name suggests, RayStorm X RayCrisis HD Collection brings two incredible shoot ‘em ups together, complete with both the original versions and HD upgrades. Both games are known for their fast-paced action, expertly-crafted level designs and gameplay that has us firing bullets and locking on with laser beams all at the same time. While the games are worth playing, the barebones approach to the compilation is disappointing. It’s also overpriced, which will likely limit the appeal of these classic shooters. RayStorm X RayCrisis HD Collection is good, but at $40, it’s for the die-hard fans only.

I don't remember how I got this game back then on the ps1 but damn was I so lucky also Einhander too.

Funny thing is, this game still looks and plays wonderful on a small screen Retro Gaming System, like an R36S, which is what I have downloaded it for right now. I like these kind of Shmup's. They are still incredibly addictive, years later, and they perform wonderfully on hand held retro systems, like the aforementioned R36S.

I love this collection, got it for my Switch.

@newspooiechannel March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

RayForce IS collected… on the Strictly Limited Games edition from Europe. Sorry, North America. You lose again!

Verdict
Ray Storm X Ray Crisis HD Collection: B+
Ray’z Arcade Chronology: A+

@theprune189 March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

B for better than paying up for the original copies

In general do over priced games hold their value. I figure less are made .
My favorite shmup on the switch is Sine Mora,
Pulstar on the Neo Geo
And I've been a fan of r type since the arcade days.
I'm terrible at all of them it though 😅

@SameNameDifferentGame March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

I am… so confused. Why did Square/Taito release this for $40 when Ray'z Arcade Chronology is only $10 more and includes all three original games? Who is this for? Any fan of the series will pay the extra ten bucks. I could see if it was maybe $20 for just the two HD versions, but this is baffling on their part.

@wilrivera2668 March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

… I believe philosoma (spell check) is from the 90's …

@Mintcar923 March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

Blazing Lazers on TurboGrafX was the best.. Got it by sheer chance!

@jwrfb26 March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

Touhou: The Story of Eastern Wonderland came out in '97. Does that count?

@priorwitness March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

QOTD – Look I'm going to get a lot of grief for this lol but I have to be honest with myself. Earth Defense Force is my favorite shooter from the 90s. Look I know I know I know! There are a ton of other great shooters that I enjoy. UN Squadron, Gradius 3, MUSHA, Gley Lancer, on and on and on. The one I always go back to the most is Earth Defense Force. Maybe it's because it's the only one I can beat without pulling my hair out. I dunno. But it gives me joy to play it!

@JenMistress March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

Yeah, I'm certainly not a hardcore fan, so $40 for that, I'll pass. As for the question, had to Google, and according to Google, guess Metal Slug counts, and seeing as that's the only one on there I'm familiar with, guess I'll say that one. 😉

@Misanola March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

The collection with Ray Force (Ray'Z Arcade Chronology) is the one to get. Not sure why you chose to review HD collection instead. But yeah, both collections are overpriced but the quality of the ports are great. Especially compared to Hamster's Arcade Archives.

@turtlepm March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

Outch, this came out in June, why the review so late? 😮

@AGL57 March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

They really shouldve included Rayforce, real letdown.

@darktetsuya March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

this one's on my list! but with the deluge of stuff coming out this holiday season it might have to wait. but it sounds like it's just as well that I did… sounds like I'm better off. QOTD: I gotta give it to the RAIDEN series, I've always found that series fun. Heck, I own all of the RAIDEN re-releases on Switch, and the moment they announce Arcade Archives: RAIDEN II it's gonna be all five of them! shoutout to the toothpaste laser, haha.

@brodogg1313 March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

Great review ❤ In the Hunt was my favorite shooter 🥖

@rafresendenrafresenden.1644 March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

interesting, all the hardcore shmups fans say the first one of the trilogy is the best one

@noneofyourbusiness4616 March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

too bad they didn't include RayParkerJunior

@kitestar March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

Personally, I prefer the complete package, ray’z arcade chronology; which came out before this one Granted it’s only a $10 difference…
QOTD: mine would be Battle Garegga with its innovative “rank” system

@Cyberpunknut March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

That is weird they didn't include Rayforce, not like it's that large of a game or more taxing. The strictly limited release has all three plus a single level of the prototype game R-Gear so I'm waiting for that to drop.

QOTD, Favorite 90s shmup is Pulstar on the Neo geo.

@jodrano9356 March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

My fave might actually be Star Parodier. A Star Soldier Collection would rule so much ass

@DrUmz2 March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

This is way to expensive! I would love to play the classics, but there are SO many modern shmups that I can buy for 40€ all together

@jenniferhunter5433 March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

Thank you so much 💖😗

@Johnnygrafx March 17, 2025 - 1:32 pm

I'd like to see a Star Soldier collection!
