They'll all be worth the same. There will be a base price, parlell, auto & maybe team color match. Perhaps with numbered stuff there might be a weak correlation with price. Nobody can tell if white speckle or green wave is rarer. As it probably 99% of all cards will have no value.
So much overpriced JUNK. It scared me away from stores and into Pokémon. In Pokémon there is clear chase cards AND they are available (not numbered bullshit). Sports makes it impossible to know what to buy
stick to the original sssp
it won't end good neo
Yes, there are way too many parallels but how else can the throttle up the printing without people getting suspicious or thinking it is Junk Wax Era 2. I can see special ones for different stores and team colors, but the rest are just redonkulous.
Anyone remember 98 Topps Tek? That set was rejected back in the day for having "too many" parallels now the set is super popular.
Yes they do. This has long been established. That’s why most of this will have no value 10 years from now.
Of yes, the death by parallel. Makes it really difficult to collect any modern product, especially football and basketball. 3 different parallels numbered to 99. What are we doing? Think about Panini is doing right now, sticker autos, jersey cards that mean nothing, and parallels upon parallels. For what it is worth, Fantatics and Topps is not any better with parallels (but clearly better on autos and jersey cards) As for long term, I am hoping something happens. Maybe Panini going away helps. Who knows? For me, if I want to collect a certain card or player, going color match (don't care about number), or neutral like silvers and refractors. Until next time….
I just wished they labeled whatever the card is – its fine to have parallels but don't make me have to try to infere what that damm thing is for an hour of second guessing
As a buy and hold collector, you really can’t buy anything less than 10 years old. I’m an Eagles fan and I’d love to get some Super Bowl guys, but I just know the cards will be cheaper in 5 years.
When the hobby decided that base cards are worthless they had/have to do something
Good job Panini. Keep pumping more unique parallels and retired players. The collectors here have spoken
Ive been picking up the Gold Refractors ✨️ whenever I can and thats all I collect and PC. So no matter how many parallels there are out there, I am all in on Gold and Orange refractors. Either way, love the hobby and am having more fun than I have in years.
P.S. also love ❤️ 98 Crusades. Those were the original parallels imo.
This is a product of the symbiosis of breakers and manufacturers that has escalated to absurdity in the last five years. Panini did escalate this trend when they got a (shared) license in hockey in the early 2010's. Certified Hockey comes to mind. Diluting EVERYTHING to make more hits for gamblers, whilst increasing the price of products. Leaf is on a whole other planet and can't be taken serious, nor should be discussed.
While I can't stand Upper Deck for what they did to hockey, or lack of. They have been consistent with keeping their cornerstones, for example the SP Authentic Future Watch cards are still numbered to /999. While that number seems high, there are no parallels other than the first 50 cards (of those 999) being dated to the players debut. Gotta give them credit for not chopping that up at least.
I miss the days when the parallels were 10, 100 and 200. 1, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 999. Diverse, yet attainable. No wonder there are no modern player or set collectors these days. Loved following player collectors hunt down their white whales closing in on 100% of all their players cards.
Cheers 🍻
Neo, considering everything you're saying about ultra-modern, is this changing your appetite for boxes upon release?
Where the products are stagnating are with having way too many points of difference/articulation, some so small as to be barely worth it.
Imagine if Prizm were a new Lottery Ticket, but instead of 9 clearly segmented Prize Divisions (0+1 up to 5+1 picking from 69-75 white balls AND 15-26 Mega Powerballs), now it’s more like 200 White balls and 40 Power Megacharizardballs, and though you just need a 0+1/1+0 to win ‘something’ (an unnumbered parallel), a /299 would be like a ‘20+10’, a /99 a ‘30+4’, a /10 ‘80+3’ and finally a 1/1 would require a ‘100+1’.
Having your ‘most common’ numbered parallel be at a ‘we can still say it’s perceptibly rare’ /299 has to go. Bite the bullet. Reduce non-numbered colors. Start the numbered parallels somewhere between /999 and /499. No multiple numbered options (don’t have three 1/1s and five /10s).
This is kinda obvious one….
You don’t think 🤔
The irony is that if they pulled way back on parallels it would create more (real) scarcity which would create more demand which would make them even more money. They need a “reset” back to 90s sets. Maybe there’s one specific set for kids that specifically goes hog wild with parallels just for fun, I dunno.
What does it matter if there’s a million parallels if you still have golds to /50 and blacks to /10, reds /5 and 1/1s etc. Those will always hold more value based on the rarity. The only thing this does is it makes the base cards basically worthless.
1996-97 topps Chrome refractors are the best shiny investments for the future
This has been the issue sine the Ja/Zion rookie year. Both of those guys have literally 1,500+ different rookie cards when you count all the variants/colors/etc. And the problem has only gotten worse since then. Then it's a compounding issue year after year after year after year, each player getting thousands of different cards with autos/patches/etc.
The biggest thing that drives long term price holds is nostalgia, not rarity. People collected stuff when they were a kid, get older, have money, and want to relive their childhood so they spend money on the things they had (or wanted) when they were a kid. Cards, comics, video games, etc, it's the same driving factor.
With this modern stuff, even people who actively follow and are heavily involved with collecting couldn't name all of the inserts, and in some cases, even have trouble identifying what a particular insert was (didn't have that problem with the Beam Team cards in 93-94 Stadium Club Basketball). So 99.99% of this stuff is going to plummet in value because you can't have nostalgia for something you never knew existed in the first place.
I think you’re on to something. Having the same card printed in a dozen different colors is indeed boring. You mentioned “the fix”, the fix is collectors. When collectors get tired of it and manufacturers sales decrease, that will force change. Personally I think that collecting may gradually see a shift back to simple set collecting. Collectors enjoying the hobby because they like the cards and players, not because it’s a one of 25 teal parallel. Set collecting is the foundation of the hobby going back to the 50s and 60s. No matter what you do, if the foundation is strong, you’ll have a healthy, thriving structure. With the structure here being the hobby. Good content. Thanks for the video.
Does it really matter long term if 75ish of these parallels are worth zero? Collectors and investors will target the cards that properly matter (colour match, legacy parallels like gold, red, blue) and those will be the cards that hold value. It's just going to be a smaller pool that hold value.
Sports killed the goose after 2020. Anything above 10 is too much. If I was still in the sports realm only the original colors and anything with a color match. Everything else no thanks.
I would call it a greedy industry that wants 1 million for a card but refuses to pay anyone not in the circle of Hobby influencers a dime for any cards that are actually worth anything. Who is going into a card-store and getting top dollar for any card?
I’m pretty sure I’m like that old man shaking his fist at the sky but why can’t we just make less stuff…. Most of the fun of late 90’s inserts is the chase to build rare sets… not everyone gets to have one and you as a collector need to prioritize and evaluate…. That to me is fun … less is more!!! Now I understand topps and panini wanting profit over cool desirable sets that people chase and not everyone gets to own… this doesn’t have an easy answer as I’m not sure the producers of the cards care about collect ability over money but sure there is someone waaay smarter than me that can figure it out
A few years late to this one Neo 😂 (I haven’t watched the video yet)
This is how it ends. All cards go to zero!!!!
