Clonk: Terraria 15 Years Before Terraria

by admin

What if I told you there was a game that combined Worms, Terraria, and Minecraft – years before those games even existed? And what if you could play it with up to 4 players on one screen? Sounds too good to be true? Then you’ve probably never heard of Clonk!

In this video, I dive deep into the forgotten gem that is Clonk Planet and Clonk Endeavour. From crazy multiplayer chaos to endless modding possibilities, this game was way ahead of its time.

📌 Timestamps:
00:00 – Intro
00:27 – History of Clonk
01:26 – Basic Gameplay Loop
02:51 – Scenarios
04:08 – Multiplayer
05:07 – Mods
06:27 – Music
07:51 – Outro

Did someone count how many times I said Clonk?

Played the heck out of it with my cousins back then. I'm still hoping someone makes a Switch Port. It could be so awesome. If you are capable and reading this, pls, pls do this. The gamecode is open source.

@samilyener March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Playing this with my brother 20 years ago was a blast. Drop one flint in base and all hell breaks loose

@TriegaDN March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

I didn't know about the game until my older brothers had me play Clonk Rage with them in the late 00s and it was a ton of fun!
I think about getting online friends to play it with me sometimes, I would like to revisit it again after 15+ years

@georgehennen March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

The Germans never fail to impress me. Maybe there is something to have little to no emotion and enjoying foot thick walls.
Jokes aside, this game has never come across my screen. Thanks for the info!

@Charlie.G March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

omg i played this in my middle schools computer lab

@TheCrustimusticus March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Germans casually overengineering anything possible:

@unknownservant913 March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

This makes me wish I grew up in Germany so I could have experienced the Clonk golden age lol

@Agarillobob March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

I hecking loved clonk planet as a kid

@Crowyth March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

I thought me and my friends were the only ones who knew about the existence of this game. We used to play Clonk Endeavour/Clonk Rage all day after school.

@SkullCrushingVideos March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

I had no idea about this that's amazing.

@mortalgar March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

cool

@gorillazhead March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

King Arthur's Gold seems to take a lot of inspiration from this game.

@seadmurtis6075 March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

surprised to see you don't have many videos, subscribed and I hope you keep making more videos in this style!

@Luv_Gsus March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Finally, after all these years, someone made a video about Clonk. My buddy was obsessed with it back in the day! Good times.

@vingevigur9202 March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Great video on the game, the only thing I would say about it is that the music is too loud compared to your voice, in the video, at least for my headphones. Anyways keep on keeping on, thanks for showing the game.

@letsdosomething9820

i have been working on a video for a while now on clonk to capitalize on the games rarity and the title i had in the works is even similar to yours…on one hand i am very happy to see the game i love very much get the attention it deserves but at the same time it kinda sucks that you beat me to it in making a video about it…i never made a yt video so it takes a while for me…

i have been playing clonk regularly since it was introduced to me in the 90s it is without a doubt my favorite game of all time.
btw the last round clonk endeavour was against my cousin and went 17 hours…yes 17 hours.

@Loganmander March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

more like dont starve than terraria or minecraft

@selectionn March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

this makes me think of cortex command, another weird but cool game with destructible environments that no ones heard of, then got abandoned, and now the community has an open source version.

@ILikeCheeserz March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

This game looks awesome.

@babafisi8135 March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Terraria Clonk mod would go actually crazy

@holymegadave March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Not related to the video but oh man i need to learn German.. i really like it. Any good book to start learning a bit?

@RSOFT92 March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

It just now occured to me: You have to right click in the bars to set the Variation, do you (for example in the Weather Screen at 03:33)?
I never managed to do this back in the day but i played an ungodly amount of hours of Clonk Planet and later Clonk Endeavour.

One of my alltime childhood favourite games! 😀👍

I even redid some of the Original Music Tracks (for private use) with LMMS (changing Instruments), since they are just MIDI-Files.

@CaptainTurkmania March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Dude thank you for actually bringing something new on the table Instead of following a simple formula.

I had no idea this existed looks hype

@Dr8cul4 March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

looks fun

@xenfermedadx March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

@BestMeme2031 March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

BROOOOO THANK YOU SO MUCH! My dad used to play this game ALL THE TIME when I was a wee little child. Man, the memories you’ve unlocked for me g

@jesseerven4859 March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

wish more people knew about this back then ;-;

@jonkku March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

I only ever played Clonk Planet a few times at a friend's house as a kid, but you're absolutely right that it left a huge impact (and a lasting memory) anyway.

@MsTerkup March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Thanks you just unlocked a memory deep in the recesses of my mind

@OhNehNee March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

@FrappuccinoAlfredo March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

And I thought Noita was innovative lol

@the_wobbly_witch March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

i heavily appreciate people who bring forgotten or obscure games up. i don't want to play new games anymore and i want to go back to playing older and more LOVED games.

@TheBLBShow March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

The space mission in clonk planet seemed like the hardest videogame level ever to me as a child. I wonder if I could beat it now and if it even was as hard as I thought as a kid

@ddmacc March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Nice Video! But the Music was a little too loud compard to your voice, I was struggling to understand you sometimes

@eyedam March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

I learned something today.

@Shumpywumper March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

You are reaching a lot saying this is like terraria. 💀

@anytorp March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

damn that’s crazy

@leirbag798 March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Cool video, I never heard of this game before. It's 11 years older than me

@birdcrossing March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

more like proto blockheads

@StrykerMagnum March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Wow, that OST is actually fire, gonna go grab some songs now. Reminds me of Megaman or VVVVVV

@BierBart12 March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Holy shit, I've been looking for this game's name for so long. I remember finding it on some gaming magazine CD with 100 games on it and playing the shit out of it, despite being too young to really get what was going on. Eventually, I somewhat figured out how the economy worked, but could NEVER have explained it to anyone else to play multiplayer.

Would never have expected this game to still have an active community. I thought it was just another piece of unknown German lost media that can now only be found on those old game magazine CDs, like so many other obscure games.

Another German abandonware game from the same disc, that is available online for free now, is Tunnels of the Underworld. A 2002 2D air/space fighting game with destructible terrain, a metric fuckton of weird weapons do destroy it with and REALLY impressive pixel physics for the time, not unlike Noita. In fact, I can't find any info on whether pixel-based physics were even a thing before this game.

@Slogstin March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

I remember playing Clonk Planet and always had that little intro sequence and menu music in my mind. I had no idea what i was doing, but i did know about how to get the more stupid Flints that were basically mini nukes. Good times.

@05Matz March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Clonk! I love these games. Always such a fun surprise to see them mentioned anywhere (I think it's less obscure in German-speaking media, but I sadly failed to learn German in university)…I need to check in on what's happened with OpenClonk recently…

@YeomanVidya March 13, 2025 - 8:25 am

Loved Clonk as a kid. Playing it with my brothers on the same keyboard was awesome
