As long they give the option to shut it off.
You can buy something like the auto start stop eliminator, remember to press it before you go on driving as soon as you get into the car to disable it for the car ride or As soon as it turns off, let go of the brake pedal immediately, and it should disable it, especially when waiting at a light or a stop sign
So people bash on these because using a traditional starter system puts wear on the starter and said starters are kinda inefficient. Newer systems however negate this. They for instance have some with more durable starters that don't wear easily. However they're still kinda inefficient to start. On hybrids, the electric motor spins up the engine unless it's too cold to do so or the hybrid battery is too weak in which case it uses the normal starter as a type of auxiliary backup. These also reduce starter wear and are a bit more efficient to start. But by far the simplest design I've heard is on fully ICE cars that simply remember which cylinder is next in line to fire and when it's time to restart, it just injects some fuel and sparks that spark plug to get it going again. It only works for the auto start/stop feature because the ECU must be on to have the data to fire the proper cylinder. Actual startup would still be by a traditional starter.
Will it affect the car driving like will it affect the battery to die … I have a 2018 jeep compass I have my off but that annoying A with a circle ⭕️ is on can I just turn it off … it’s $82 dollars to get a diagnosis Will I ruin my car driving it with that alert ‼️
Do not want
It's 2024 now and I don't like it on my Ford Maverick truck. I turn it off most of the time. I live in a rural area without many lights and stop signs. It is a hassle to me and not worth it. You should be able to turn it off permanently, but you have to turn it off every time you start the vehicle.
By not using it, it will pay for itself by not having to prematurely replace the starter or any other component wearing out faster due to continuously repeated use.
First time I heard of this, it seemed like a weird modern annoyance. But I'm now buying a new Toyota, so who knows. Will give it a try.
Another thing also is short trips and a battery that’s not fully charged will defeat the auto start stop. Because I had mine not work for at least two weeks before all of a sudden I took a longer trip since all I go is to work and back and it decided to work again when I came to a stop at the light or my turn to cross at a stop sign.
in ideal conditions, i.e. no ac, no rain, no headlights, engine stops and waits for a minute or so on each red light. however, if you run ac, and who does not, the stop is only 5-7 seconds. i.e. no fuel economy. the whole thing seems to me a sweet deal between epa and car makers. they all pretend to do smtg good for the environment. batteries, starters, oil starvation, you all know the problems.
Why do Americans hate this helpful feature?
Great way to sell starters
What could go wrong? SMH.
The joke that they use a heavy-duty starter and a deeper cycle battery are complete horse hockey… it's also the rest of the engine that suffers from this starting and stopping the fuel savings are miniscule compared to the repairs that will be needed on these engines
I have it (" Enhanced restart in stop and go traffic") on my new Mercedes E class. It shuts down silently, so far so good. But when I lift my foot from the brake it feels like crack smoking zombies are attacking my engine. I use it to save gas but I hate the way it works.
If it’s enhanced what was the original like??????
I was never made aware of this feature before in any of my vehicles. I have always kept up with all the latest technology. I never noticed any difference or problems with any of my previous cars nor my current one. It’s a 2018. It’s a Turbo 2.0 AWD Lincoln MKZ Reserve. The power that I have in the car pins me in my seat. I was in the wrong lane on a road that was new to me. I had to crossover to get to my exit as fast as possible. As soon as the light turned green I punched it. I crossed 4 lanes & made my exit. I was stunned. I couldn’t see any other exits but the one I had taken. I didn’t want to be lost on Country Roads. Later, I discovered it would have taken me an hour & a half before I could have taken the next exit. My previous Lincoln was a 2011 Lincoln V6. I had no idea a 2.0 would ever have that much power at takeoff. I had 2.0 turbo 4’s before. Nothing like this one. If it has the start/stop feature I’m not aware of it. My car is loaded with Safety Features/Equipment. If I thought that I wouldn’t have made the crossover I would’ve done it. My car would’ve alerted me. It also stops me if traffic stops suddenly. When I’m buying a vehicle I’m overwhelmed by all of the numerous safety features & what’s under the hood. I have paddle shifters. I can change my settings from comfort, sport & I forget the 3rd setting is. I will be sure to check out the Start/Stop feature now. I started working at an Auto Parts Warehouse. 2 to be exact. I love to be educated every chance I get. I wish more experts would discuss Hydroplaning. Thanks you.
And what you say about novice drivers that panic and try to see what they did wrong when they notice the engine stopped at the red light even through they did nothing wrong?
I have a hard time watching with the flashing between segments with my eye condition but an over all great info
It is a bulshit. I hate it.
How do you shut it off entirely? I know there’s devices that you can install to have it auto disable, but I’m wondering where to disable from the vehicle
I turn it off every time.
I got a thing on the internet that cuts that bull out.Why would you want to ware your motor out prematurely ,You don't what you are talking about!. You save gas up front but pay for a new motor later so you don't save anything,.
I dont think the starter is doing-the work ,the computer remembers the last piston fired and fires the next sequence of pistons.
7 years later, im so grateful i found this video. Great host as well.
I must disable this thing
If it is on. Once your in full stop or idle and auto stop technology applied do you need still to shift your stick to neutral even your engine is in stop when holding the brake or leave it on Drive (D).
It's January 2023 , thoughts anyone ?
More bells and whistles to go wrong.
This guys got a great sense of humour lol!!
Worst invention, how many starters will you go through
I didn't know I had stop/start in my focus until I had to pay extra for a special stop/start battery when the old one failed. The stop/start in my car has never worked, not once in the three years ive had it, and that's ok by me as i dont think I would like the car cutting out and rolling backwards if i stopped on a hill.
It works great.. adds complexity, cost of maintenance, prematurely wears flywheel teeth and starters and most have secondary lead acid batteries, which are great for the environment. We also have chip shortages and having this feature helped increase new car prices by 19% yeah it's great, saves you .05% of gas over 10 years, but costs you tens of thousands of dollars.. thanks California
I own a 2022 Civic Si, gotta turn this feature off every time I start the damn car. Side note this feature can damage your starter in the long run…
my 25k jetta has it
Remember the KISS rule. Keep It Simple Stupid!
I am interested in the cost of installing it on an older vehicle. Idling in large city traffic jams is irritating and causes huge smog issues. You can go for miles without even starting a car if you are on a downhill section. A more expensive battery is a minor cost. What is the cost of purchasing and installation? Maybe we can avoid recycling huge numbers of dead electric cars with a small modification to our gasoline cars.
I have this feature in my car too but it’s called manual stop and start, it works by the driver manually turning the key to either off or on depending on the situation and it’s a standard feature too!……i know I know, I will walk myself out the rear door so please hold on to your tomatoes thank you very much
It's junk technology that does very little to save gas,,and much more to wear out the engine. In other words. it's no Damn good
Works great!!
Someone else drove my jeep when I got it back noticed engine stop at the light, I said what's going on, that is why I'm here, didn't know my has this upgraded, but I'm agree with some of you, engine on an off 100 times per day sooner or later something will broke
Well that was fun. Just bought my first vehicle with this dang ole "feature" and I thought I broke the damn thing before I got home. 🙃
I don't believe the 3-10 percent savings. I drive on the highway 100 miles a day and the engine some days never turns off. When it does turn off, it's for 10 seconds waiting for a light to change. That is when my 2022 Civic actually turns off. Most the time it has some reason to not turn itself off. It's overall annoying and I hope it doesn't have a hiccup some time I'm pulling into traffic that is coming down the road. Rolling into a semi isn't the way I'd like to go out.
