Defunct Games reviews Horizon Chase Turbo by Aquiris Game Studio, available now on PlayStation 4. Coming soon to Switch and Xbox One.
Horizon Chase Turbo is more than just a fun throwback game, it’s also one of the best racers I’ve played all year. This is a surprisingly long game filled with great graphics, a killer soundtrack, dozens of cars, tons of locations and extra modes that will have you playing for weeks to come. Horizon Chase Turbo is one of the few modern racing games to get old school nostalgia right.

Street Rod or Test Drive, which was first.
… Wiki says Test Drive won :).
And shortly after came, my second most beloved racing game from my childhood after Street Rod, Stunts.
My first racing game was Grand Prix (Atari 2600). I was a huge fan of Enduro, but I didn't have the cartridge (nor my friends at the time).
Qotd: pole position.
Bad scaling. Take that back!
Rad Racer for me. I know i played some Atari ones but cant remember.
I have it
Late to the party, but this is why I love the game and probably will for years to come. Not only is it literally timeless, but it’s also challenging and fun. The best part is that I used to play a TON of Pole Position. I had a lot of fun. And now you are telling me there’s a game with over 30 cars and 100 tracks!? I was hooked from race 1
It was a game called Enduro. Although the first one that made me really get into racing games was Road Rash. =)
Ps + brought me.
I don't have a PS4 so I bought the ios version. I bought it beacuse of the nostalgia of the Rad Racer, Top Gear, Out Run era. I wasn't expecting much but it turned out to be one the best racing games I've played in a long time. First racing game I remember playing..
R.C. Pro-AM.
I guess you can say it's a 'RAD' Racer.
My first racing video game memory is also Rad Racer. I also remember that game relentlessly kicking my ass.
As always, great review and thanks for all the pertinent information.
Fun game, just bought it for Nintendo Switch
Endro Racer
Looked this game up after seeing it on the eshop(preorder, out Nov 28th iirc), think this review has convinced me to get it. Looks fun. I feel like the first racing game I tried was Pole Position, but the first one I really played was Super Mario Kart.
split screen is gonna be fun with this game
Slot cars in the early '80s not withstanding, yeah, probably Rad Racer on the NES for me.
Good review of an amazing game! 🙂
First would be Pole Position in the arcade or that black and white very early super sprint type game from Atari against in the arcade. In our town we had a yearly fun fair and that had a section of arcade games. It had such an evocative atmosphere of the sound of the waltzer and other rides and the smell of generators and candy floss:)
If you wanted to come in 1st place, get all coins, and keep your gas topped all in your 1st try (or atleast easier time), then pick a vehicle and upgrades in the beginning, that's tuned to the more "boring" stats.
Fuel is the most important stat if you want to conscientious finish with 9-10 fuel points. However, if "Pro Stamp" isn't your concern then you could argue Fuel is one of the least important stat
Handling is almost as important as it will save you more when it comes to maneuvering to collect coins, avoid other vehicles and the wall.
Acceleration is medium, as it will allow you to resume top speed from braking and tight corners faster. If you focus on Handling over acceleration, and acceleration over Top Speed, then you should be able to overtake 1st by the time you get to final lap.
Top speed is one of the least important stats, as even if you avoid Speed upgrades, the game will always allow you time to overtake 1st, if you prioritize Top Speed in efforts to take 1st on Lap 1, you're going to battle hard with the CPU to keep your position, as opposed to taking 1st on your last lap.
Nitro is the least important stat. It's fantastic on long, wide straightways, and can turn things to your favor in an instant, but they're limited, so it's a stat that becomes practically 0 when you run out of Nitro; also by increasing the potency of Nitro for that quick gain is going to be to be detrimental to later tracks that incorporate several back and forth turns, if you prioritize Handling and Acceleration, then you can come in 1st by the final lap without using a single Nitro provided that you didn't hit more than 2 walls and a few cars along the way.
Midnight club 3!!!
Did anybody tried the split screen mode? Is it fun?
First one I remember playing was pole position 2
I want this game for 3ds too
dude, the aquaris is a brazillian game studio, this game is based in the Top Gear games, they even called the original music creator to make the music for this game
Top Geat have a huge fan base here
Top gear was the first racing game i played. also one of the first games, along with super mario world. there's even an easter egg regarding the Top gear 3000 ship if you look at Antarctica on the world map.
Looks very much like a modern version of the Top Gear games on the SNES. I really like the graphics and overall design. The review convinced me that it's a top quality game that fans of arcade-style racers should enjoy, so I will be buying the PS4 version. Thanks for an excellent appraisal of the game.
To everyone asking if this is a port of the mobile game, it is not. Aquiris has been interviewed recently and they claimed they had to redesign the tracks in lenght and in layout to proper challenge the skills of the players (in order to avoid crushing into the poles and obstacles) as this version – Turbo – has Break while the mobile didn't (so it was very easy and didn't require much care for corners). It is a full fledged remake, with new modes, two new world's (with 9 new tracks), support to leaderboard, ghost mode, tournament, and resistance mode
It is not a port.
My first racing game was Mario Kart on the SNES. But I did just play some of Top Gear over the weekend. This game looks just like a 3D version of it, witty comments when passing opponents included.
I’m not 100% sure what my answer is as there’s a ton of racing games I have played in my youth, so the earliest I can remember would have to be pole position in namco museum for the dreamcast, sure it’s not the best version of the series and I only started collecting psx games late in life, but it was my memories I had to sift through
Awesome review man! I love games like this
My first racing game was my first PC game : Moto Racer 1
I'm glad u liked this, I was just as skeptical.
I can't remember. For being one of my favorite genres you would think I'd remember. Nope. I think will Smith got me with that flashy pen from MIB.
My first racing game was probably Virtua Racing or Daytona Usa on the arcades, or Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II on Mega Drive.
Enduro on Atari 2600, though I remember really disliking it. It wasn't until Hang-On and Out Run in the arcade that I took any genuine interest in the genre.
I've binged a lot of Top Gear in my time, so I'll definitely be grabbing this one. I was reluctantly optimistic when I saw it pop up on Steam, but this puts my worries at ease. Though there are supposedly plans for a Switch release later this year, so I may hold out for that. After Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Fast RMX, and now with this and Redout on the way, it's quickly becoming my racing platform of choice.
Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat
outrun , pole position and rad racer were my favorite racing games.
Rad racer for me too! Took ages to beat, remember the Greece stage being my nemesis…
This, and Fast Beat Loop Racer GT both on Steam within the same week! fun racing is back.
First racing game, I know dad had an Atari 2600, and I do remember playing Indy 500 on it when I was a little girl, but like with you, can't remember for sure if that was the first.
Hah! You know what? I NEVER played Top Gear/Outrun & Co. 😉 but bought this in an instant (no idea why tbh!) and omg it's soooo much fun so far! 🙂 Not too far into yet and I'll probly struggle with the "locked away" content later on but as the races are fun and short so far I shouldn't mind too much I guess. Great review (as usual), thx!
QotD: Hm, first game I've played at a friends place should be Test Drive, the first one I've played on my own, phew, Super Off Road for the Game Gear…if that counts? 🙂 First ever played on PC sure was Battle Race 3D or Megarace. I can't remember which one was first released 🙂 o/
