The beauty of score is that, by labeling a game 10, you might subconsciously believe that it is a 10, appreciating all the things you might hate should it be given a 6. Even if you found out it was no way a 10, you might still give it a 9, 8. That's the power of media, that is marketing.

If the publication is worth anything then of two games rated clearly differently the higher rated is better. If they are in the same genera.

I don't care for scores at all. I read reviews, from big reviewers to the normal gamer, but I don't look at the scores. Especially not if it's Metacritic.
A "Let's Play" often helps with my decision. I watch the first two or three episodes, and if the game could not grab my attention, then it's a okay-ish or bad game for me.

I think the problem is a lot of people think they're still in school and there's some PASS or FAIL threshold. There isn't, 5/10 is simply arithmetic mean. Score inflation totally-not-influced-by-publisher-money has screwed up the entire system.

And now I realize you talk about it later on.

scores don't mean much if they come from polygon.
