Watch our Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered review, written by Christian Donlan and narrated by Ian Higton, to find out what we think of the Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered gameplay in Aspyr’s latest set of Tomb Raider remasters. In this Eurogamer Tomb Raider remastered review, we’ll be covering Tomb Raider 4 remastered, Tomb Raider 5 remastered, and Tomb Raider 6 remastered, otherwise known as Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Tomb Raider: Chronicles, and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.
The remasters are every bit as heartfelt as they were with the first three Tomb Raider games, and while the reward for your effort isn’t three all-time classics this time round, it’s something arguably just as interesting. Check out our full Eurogamer Tomb Raider review to find out how each game shapes up.
Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered is out now on PS5 (PlayStation 5), PS4 (PlayStation 4), Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store).

I like Angel of Darkness
AoD is MUCH more playable than it ever was in the past. It's the only Tomb Raider game I never completed. I found AoD much easier to control than it's previous incarnation. Judging by the gameplay on display here for all of the games, I'd say it was more of a YOU problem than the game. I mean, how can you have so much trouble shooting a damned dog?? As for your ledge grabbing? c'mon now… who was recording the gameplay, a blind man with no thumbs? Or are you just purposefully trying to make the games look bad? This "review" seems like it was written by someone who has never played a Tomb Raider game before.
The appeal of 3d games around the time of the tomb raider games was seeing how level designers would attempt to simulate and "gamify" scenarios based on real life locales or aesthetics within the constraints of the then current state of the art 3d, as opposed to scenarios youd see in games like quake or doom. It was a pretty interesting time for games. Level design had to be recognizable and deliberate. Nowadays you have tons of 3d games with open areas, open zones etc that can be built around any design you imagine, and yet they dont seem to work as games all that much.
As for trying new ideas, the fact that there were still so many untested ideas made that "wild west" era of gaming that much fascinating to me. I could excuse most experimentalisms and still come out enjoying the experiences.
This collection isn't nearly as popular as 1-3. Nobody is talking about it. 😂
If you’re playing TR1-5 with modern controls, you are making the games much more difficult than they need to be. Take the time to learn the tank controls, the way the game was designed to be played!
With AoD I found the tank controls way more reliable than modern controls. They have been improved by a lot and since Lara still acts like she's on a grid but the levels themselves not being grid based this time, I suppose both could work. But from playing the og PS2 version, the og Steam version, a heavily modded Steam version and now the Remaster, I can say movement is in fact a lot better than it was in any other version of this game.
The sound Lara makes when she falls to her death and hits the ground….
Yikes……or good ole memories 😅
Who else remembers they released AoD as a DVD game back in the day? Honestly though just give me TLR and the rest is a bonus
Hoping to see a Digital Foundry video covering these awesome remasters
Yeah the controls arent the problem, you are…
Sadly reflections in AoD didn't make it to the console versions. The PC version from GOG has them though, so maybe Aspyr will add them in a future patch.
the fact that the reviewer almost died at 5:35 to a fkn dog is hilarious. these games absolutely require finesse in the gamer's inputs and once mastered are hugely rewarding. tank controls ftw. that's how these games were meant to be played.
Developers should add Screen brightness toggle in settings , Remaster versions are too dark , had to switch on /off retro graphics for better visibility
Angel of darkness has got to be the laziest remaster I have ever played
Revelations was my favourite entry in the original series, so I'm really looking forward to playing it again! 😯😀🤘 …
Chronicles I also rather liked, although I remember how short it felt like it was only DLC for The Last Revelation, while the level where you played as young Lara in Kerry felt the most limited and I believe was the shortest one too, while it felt especially weird because she didn't have any weapons in it, which was understandable o guess when she's only about 13 in it, but still, they're very and indeed too safe! 😯😂🩲 …
On The Angel of Darkness, I enjoyed it overall, though I disliked the later fantasy levels, especially where you played as Curtis a lot more than the early parts of the game…
But overall, I still really want to play this game soon and over the 1-3 remaster that I must get back into, which indeed I'm stuck in, a hour or two into! 😯😂🩲😀🤘 .
LIKE this comment if you plan to buy the PHYSICAL /cartridge version 🙏 (how long will we wait this time?)
Sadly no in-game-achievements for the Nintendo Switch… unless they patch it? (Let's dare do dream). Now we just need to wait for the physical cartridge version and will buy it. Cheers. Great video btw
I can't explain why but Chronicles is probably my favourite TR game overall.
I strongly hate AoD remastered because Lara does not dual guns until the louvre which is B S and no unlimited ammo. I regret and wish I never pre-ordered tomb raider iv-vi remastered for PS4 and PS5 complete waste of money and time and AoD remastered is a huge joke. saber interactive the developer I strongly hate them for making tomb raider iv-vi remastered.
"Time to put things right"
Now that's a statement.
Plz tell me they fixed Angel of Darkness
im sorry aod's remaster is not perfect but saying the game still feels terrible to play is just a matter of skill issue. the controls now work perfectly fine and theres no game breaking bugs. theres also content restored. if you struggle with any of it consider the idea that youre just not that good at videogames
AoD does not even have original PS2 controls as an option. They moved the original controls over. Circle was jump… its not the same game. The tank controls are worse in remaster. I just played the original on my phone. Slight improvement. Only additions are in early paris.
AOD is indeed still a bit naff where controls are concerned. The original AOD on PS2 had different controls than the tank controls in this remaster. It seems the tank controls are the same as what is in the PS1 TR games (TR1, 2, 3, 4 & 5).
It means we don't get the quick turn unless in modern controls, for example.
The environments look unplayably dark
As expected the fanboy comments are unbearable. A game having crap controls doesn't mean people can't get good at them of they play for long enough. The controls and camera are still crap, even compared to other tank control games, and not everyone played these games to death back in the day. Legend was the first TR game that felt good to play.
i agree with most of the opinions in this video, but god damn I've never seen a reviewer play a game so badly to illustrate the game not being good at some things. Maybe if you actually learn the controls before criticising the game it'll feel more meaningful…
even if aod is bad, ill still have fun with 4 and 5
I think they did a great job with these remasters, worth every penny in my opinion.
4/5 is a bit harsh. Yes, the AoD gameplay is still horrible, but their job is not overhauling the original gameplay.
I like these older tomb raider games, but that's a good general review. The controls are still hassle compared to new games today, but its fine, just be patient and consistent. They are very good games and even better than most new games today. They are worth your time. They make you use your head.
I'm waiting for the anniversary, legends, and underworld collection because I just returned the original trilogy after playing it for a day. I was so excited to play those games and the control issues made it more frustrating than fun when I would have her moving forward and she would suddenly go the opposite direction for no reason making me fight with the controls half the time. I've never played a game with such a major control issue and couldn't believe the developers didn't fix that with a patch at least. . Wasted $30 on a shiny turd of a port and aspire can kiss my hairy ass for that. 😉
3 and 4 are staple Tomb Raiders for me and the best titles in the series imo.
I enjoyed 2 don’t get me wrong but I only enjoyed it more when I was able to change the sfx to sound more like 3-4 LOL
Leave me alone, I'm busy
Just finished AoD remastered. Highly disagree that the controls are still terrible – even tank, which ive always prefered for Lara, feels so so much better than it did in the original version.
I wonder why they've left things so dark.. Are they just replacing the existing lights wholesale instead of going through it all & checking which individual areas need tweaking?
Also, sorry about the umm actually, but Aspyr is pronounced like aspire.
Anyone that reviews a tomb raider remaster on modern controls is basically an irrelevant opinion 👌
