Anyone who says the Jag can’t do fully texture-mapped 3D graphics, show them this game. Seriously the graphics in this game look comparable to the majority of games on 3DO/Saturn/PSX/N64.
I never really considered the Jaguar the same generation as the PlayStation, Saturn and N64. The console war was well over for Atari by the time they arrived.
So this game is from the same company which coded AvP, which looks like Wolfenstein3d, but with floor and ceiling. They now allow to look up and down and created this MineCraft style. Do we have the source code? I've got the feeling that they may have used a raycasting engine ( in 2d ) and trace the screenHeight of the buildings (I guess that bridges and niches are z-buffer objects like the enemies). Then they mark all hit faces and render back to front ( to avoid z-buffer read for the scenery).
Then maybe it is just that the quad are a good match for the limited texture cache ( so they always use it completely ). Maybe they even sort by texture and do indeed read the z-buffer?
Why does the gameplay look so totally boring compared to Descent ?
The Jaguar doesn't have a bad reputation at all. And comparing it to the PSX and N64 doesn't make any sense, as both came two years later here in Europe, with the N64 actually being questionable, too (I always absolutely hated this blurry mess of dirty graphical mush!). And the Saturn was still one year later than the Jaguar and also it was of no relevance here, most people didn't even know it existed, because Sega messed up it's PR. Actually (if for a short time) the Jaguar was the best console. It was just bad luck, the Jaguar had those two broken by design chips, which made coding the Jaguar too hard for creating games like this in it's early days.
The Jaguar's first years of life were really hurt by the 32X and Virtual Boy. Clear stop gap systems thrown out there to prevent the jaguar from getting to a critical mass that would have helped atari to court more triple A sales and invest more in development.
Also had they priced it at 199 or 149 in it's first year (even selling the system at a loss) they would have had A LOT more sales in 1994 before the PS and SS arrived.
I did not know this game existed before watching your channel and I want it. I'm going to have to hit my sources up too see if I can get it. This game is really giving me G-Police vibes for the PlayStation. They definitely have a similar vibe too them and look. If you haven't played G-Police before and you seem too really enjoy this…check it out.
I have to disagree with the N64 ans PS comment regarding pushing the limits of those systems had this come out for them. If anything, Had you said this was a 32X game, I would have believed it. I can't make heads or tails where you are in relation to the walls. Anyway, the revue was great because you actually like the game. Im still waiting for someone in homebrew to push this system and blow our minds. As it is now, everything looks like a Sega Genesis/ Super Nintendo effort.
The game would have been one of the best Jaguar games had it been released earlier. Compared to the 32x or Sega CD this is awesome. But compared to early Playstation games like Warhawk or Descent – its similar and then compare to later games like G-Police or Colony Wars and it doesnf stack well.

Would this game be one of the best graphics that the Jaguar could pull off?

It was worth listening to you say “Jagwire” 40 times in under 3 minutes, to see that game. Thanks!
This actually looks really good!
Games where crap back the
Imagine if this, AVP, super burnout and tempest had been available at launch. Would have been a different story for sure!

This game takes place in 2022!
The view is windowed.
This may be Rebellion doing better but I can't imagine it as the limit considering Rebellion and the tools the poor bastards had to use.
Take a shot every time he says "jag-WIRE".

Say it right, Chow-daaaaa!
Where's your review of Soccer Kid?
Its not Jag Wire. Its Jag Wah.
The best part is the draw distance
I’m sorry, lol I can’t finish this review for the silly superficial reason that you keep pronouncing Jaguar like “Jagwire”.
