Review: Maniac (Steam) – Defunct Games

by admin

Defunct Games reviews Maniac by Transhuman Design, available now on PC, Mac and Linux.

Maniac takes everything great about Grand Theft Auto and mixes it with the fast-paced action found in Vampire Survivors to create one of the most outrageous games of the year. This game excels because of the incredibly varied and well-crafted open-world sandbox, giving you new locations to explore and all kinds of things to dodge. You’ll quickly transform into a superhero as you buy upgrades and replay the twenty-minute-long mission over and over again, leading to some of the most explosive action this side of a Michael Bay movie. Sure, it can get a little repetitive and it probably won’t tide you over until Grand Theft Auto VI, but Maniac is an instantly likable action game with tons of personality and a leveling-up loop that will keep you addicted for a long time to come. Maniac is easily worth five-dollars.

Good news! Manual aiming was added in an update. You can turn off autoaiming in the options. I play with autoaim off, and the game is far more enjoyable, IMO.

Great review, thanks DG!

Looks like this would have been good on the Vita.

QOTD, Easily Elden Ring.

As someone who remembers the GTA of old, as well as chaotic criminal mayhem-shmups like Loaded something about this game speaks to me… but I do wonder, how differently do the characters play? Is it mostly a question of different stats, or more a question of various different playstyles?

And it is on sale for $4.49 until April 11th. Hmmmm, April 11th, sounds like someone's birthday. 😉 Yeah, interestingly enough the sale lasts until my birthday. But does sound like an interesting game and not that expensive either, may check it out. As for the question, depends on how you define Open World, my answer Life is Strange may not be as Open World as say a Skyrim, but there is Open World elements to it, so that's why I'll say that.

This looks like a sweet throwback

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of "open world" games, but I do really enjoy Destiny and Forza Horizon.

I think there is a game missing from the formula of 'O.G GTA + Vampire Survivor'; Postal 1. The character selection, the lack of missions instead of pure carnage, etc. is very old-school Postal. Not really fond of the idea of not being able to aim, though; it always reminds me of phone games.

QOTD; Crackdown 1 and Outcast are my open-world faves. Haven't played the Outcast sequel but it looks great – can't say the same about Crackdown follow-ups though.

… not sure about not controlling the aiming …
