Valve working on making games work well on SteamOS is great, as anyone playing games on Linux get full benefits. Anything that works well on SteamOS works great on Proton (obviously).
It's been great, I generally play fresh releases on proton and performance is the same, or in some cases better than windows.

SteamOS I guess is nice for people who want a console-like UI and only play games, I do also want to code and do regular PC stuff so I'm not excited for the OS itself, but it all makes me very positive of Valve.

Mu computer keeps on trying to get me to downgrade to windows 11 from windows 10

@jackdempsy9304 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

great video man but please keep your mouth the same distance from your microphone the whole video because i dont like having to adjust my volume every time you get close to the mic

@quebeqseven February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

I’ve always believed eventually microsoft are gonna pull out of the console wars and just make PCs with the name xbox on them they’re already ahead on the OS front, if they can get an xbox mode or something on the next version of windows i think it’ll be the best decision they’ve ever made.

@snowwann273 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

im literally holding off from going to win11 for steamOS or some debloated, gaming version of win11

@StormCOG February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

You look like Wavywebsurf

@stevedixon921 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Given that Microsoft is now using SCARE TACTICS about upgrading to Windows 11 (which is unsupported on my hardware), I'm testing out Debian on my 'unsupported' machines. I'd actually be okay about multi-booting to SteamOS, in the guise of 'maximal performance', but sometimes it is nice to have access to a web browser and certain other apps during a game session (a browser and notepad++ would fit MOST of my needs).

Additionally, anti-cheat needs kernel access? I do not consent. I may not know it is happening, but I don't need the TSA in my bathroom either (South Park reference).

Unrelated: how is 'modding' not a real word in 2025? My browser keeps flagging it as misspelled.

With what M$ is doing with Xbox IP going 3rd party and the "this is an Xbox" marketing, I have a new theory.

I think M$ may have saw this coming from Valve and now see this as a HUGE threat. And that's why they are going to branch out with their IP, possibly even releasing Xbox OS for PCs for people to build their own Xboxs, while still releasing them for average console gamers.

The fact that Xbox consoles sales are low is just a reason for M$ to prioritize this move.

And if you are asking, "well why is M$ selling their games on Steam?" Well despite their competitive history against Apple, they still sold their software on Macs in the 90s. So it's nothing new.

EDIT: just finished the rest of the video, glad to see this is where the video went.

Due to all the C02 propaganda everywhere in win11 I would change OS in a heartbeat if I could.

@Hathathorne February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

I'm switching to steam OS if there is a way for me to switch without having to back up all my data and reintroduce it to a new OS.

@DarkRavenhaft February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Calling it now: Microsoft is just going to create a Chromebook for gaming. You won't need to install anything, or own any of the software, as it will all be streamed from one of their servers. That way they can harvest all data at the source, no consent needed, and keep up the trend of removing any semblance of ownership from private consumers.

@Myst97 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

I just want to add, windows hasnt just broken assassins creed. It has broken other games. Most recently for me is path of exiles 2, the game just simply will no run on the latest windows 11 update 24h2. I had to roll back to 23h2 in order to play poe2. This is a similar issue for AC. Cause when i was looking into crashing reports for poe2 ac was having the same problem with the same update, thats how i found out rolling back windows update solved most peoples crashing issues. 24h2 gives me unbearable crashes on my pc, and mean while rolling back to 23h2 ive received 0 crashes in almost 90 hours of playing poe2.

@daniel_dumile February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

I love Steam deck and the Linux setup so much

@cases2939 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

If steam OS intends to make a profit by not making a profit? They have my vote!

@superbiiah20 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Making the move from Windows to Steam OS on my desktop is a dream come true. It’s everything I’ve wanted in a gaming system and more.

@Gann4Life February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

hamongus

@ZomborgYT February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

"Windows 11 kind of blows" Dawg, that is an understatement. They're giving HP a run for their money for how bloated it is.

@eeyoretriple6 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

I just want Steam OS on my desktop

@Goober_gobbler February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Even if other companies come out with handhelds that are objectively better, ill still buy from steam. I like how they do business, they don’t feel like their trying to rip every single penny from their customers. It feels like they actually care about what we think

@Goober_gobbler February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

3:10 i never thought about it this way 😭 im the type of person who doesn’t notice the difference between 30fps and 60fps, but the amount of people who wont play a game if it doesn’t run with a high fps is bonkers. The fact they gave up their performance is HUGE

@johnsherby9130 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

I have a laptop with a relatively okay 4 core, integrated graphics, 16gb ram, and a fast SSD. Win11 has this thing using like 8GB of ram and 50% CPU minimum just idling! It's absurdly slow, can't sleep correctly, and extremely inefficient. windows 11 is so bloated its genuinely absurd. I finally got fed up today after realizing that I have no reason to use windows and do virtually all of my school work in chrome. I kept my windows install on the hard drive and setup dual boot with Linux mint but honestly i think I'm done with windows for good, so many downsides for virtually no upside anymore.

The only issue left to tackle is gaming and my gaming pc is switching to steam OS the very millisecond they begin to support the games I play. Bye bye windows, rest in piss.

@FrazzleCat February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

I had been dual booting for awhile then on Jan. 31st I deleted Windows entirely. Not because of Windows 10, but because Win 11 installed an update without my knowledge and yet again broke drivers. Both my networking and GPU drivers were broken from it. I'm completely sick of it. This on top of forcing OneDrive and now their CoPilot spyware junk and I have had enough. I'd have to reinstall ("refresh") the O/S again anyway, so I ditched Windows and went entirely with Nobara. As for Kernal level anti-cheat I can live without those games, so for me that Linux gaming desktop is here.

@onatics February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

I dont just game on my pc. You gotta consider that a pc is more than just a tool for gaming.

@PlushieMaxxing February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Reminder; most games with anticheat DO run on Linux, it's just the anticheat is explicitly OPTED OUT from working.
Rust works not just fine, but outright BETTER than on Windows. You're just unable to play on most real servers due to the fact that the anticheat does not validate Linux Clients. It is a conscious decision as other games with EAC work perfectly fine. The Finals runs perfectly on Linux and I've been playing it quite a bit recently.
There is no longer an excuse outside of absolute and sheer malice to not support Linux in this day and age.

@glovedcop69 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Asise from Baz Im still waitng for them to release the OS on systems like the ROG.

@TheRockhound119 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

SteamOS coming to PC would make me drop Windows. Willing to use emulators if some games don't work, windows is just bad these days. Last Windows OS I liked was 7. 8 was awful, 10 was not good, and I'm not upgrading to 11. I almost didn't upgrade to 10.

@vanminhle850 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

why whenever somebody does the right things in gaming, it's always Valve?

@AiriMagePRISM February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

12:02 Uh, don’t know what to say other than like hell I can’t. I’ve wracked up over 60hrs on Apex alone on my Deck for the past 2yrs and have booted up both Fortnite and Valorant without issues, though I soon deleted both due to not liking them. At the very least, Apex is certainly compatible with the Deck in its current state.

@firestuka8850 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

I am on Win10 until Steam OS is ready for PC Desktop.
Ill jump on steam, add SteamOS to my library as a software, and hit install. Then , let the work begin. If that's how they roll it out , Valve would win instantly.

@EdnovStormbrewer February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Biggest clickbait and totally old news

@David-h5r1x February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

That is why i never upgraded to windows 11 if it aint broke dont fix it

@kubuntukowalski February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Been on linux(mint, ubuntu, kubuntu, nobara, fedora, pop os, etc) for a few years gaming and never looked back, just had to settle on a distro that I liked the more I learned with absolutely no "power-user" experience necessary.. just basic computer knowledge. When videos like this come out it really shows me how little windows or mac users know about how linux actually is. If steamos gets people over to linux thats great.

@Catge February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Maybe linux will be usable for consumers in 10 years

@Lunaspecter69420 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

i was considering linux mint but when hearing steam os, im more tempted to switch to steam os

@LtsVapor February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

as soon as this is working properly on pc im switching steam is amazing and has a monopoly basicly for selling games but only bc they make it such a good experience for us gamers this is gonna be great

@Griffos_improve_heart_health February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

W Linux

@marshallodom1388 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

They are one and the same and have no purpose or place in my life.

@garyjonjon February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Windows 11 doesn't suck, Microsoft does! All gamers will rejoice when apple and linux can also play all the games.

@christophernewhouse5832 February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Please let me download & play every game on steam with my M3 mac book it doesn't make any logical sense with this laptops processing power it will handle the job at 4k my internet can't go as fast as this laptop until overheating starts happening editing 8k 1 hour videos back 2 back is still a hard task however being able to do it in 9-18 minutes is pretty cool the $1,700 though should be more like $1,100 with a (p e n d u l o b e) screwdriver scraping tool & a paper that has a web link on it showing how to properly fix ur own device thanks for the information<>

@im.thatoneguy February 11, 2025 - 7:39 am

Gabe wasn't responding to Windows' quality with Windows 8. He was responding to the fact that it had an app store that sold games. It threatened the Steam Monopoly that governments are now responding to as having been abused by Gabe/Valve.

Ironically Valve and Epic Games raising such a fit over Windows 8 and refusing to play ball resulted in Apple and Google taking Microsoft to the cleaners in the tablet space–and now they're trying to sue Apple and Google for a monopoly on their app stores. So even though Microsoft promised they wouldn't abuse their included app store and would continue to allow steam / epic games to sideload without any restrictions they ensured Apple did exactly that.
