That’s according to business journalist Christopher Dring, who added that, for multi-platform titles, inclusion in Game Pass can drive PS5 sales.

Speaking as part of a Q&A on the InstalBase forums, Dring was asked his thoughts about Game Pass and its impact on the market.

“Anecdotally, games that are in Game Pass can expect to lose around 80% of its expected premium sales on Xbox,” Dring wrote.

“That’s the figure that gets thrown around. It’s less if it’s a big mainstream release, but generally… look at how low Hellblade 2 charted. Or where Indiana Jones came. Or even Starfield. Game Pass clearly hurt sales of those titles on Xbox.

“But… if it’s a game on multiple platforms, it can be beneficial. That surge in players on one Xbox can have a strong impact on sales on PlayStation, for instance.”

Dring went on to say that he feels “torn” on the effectiveness of subscription models and it’s highly dependent on the genre and type of game. “Try being an indie game on Xbox right now that’s not on Game Pass…”

“But also, getting people to play your game in 2024/2025 is so, so, so hard. And subscription gets games in front of lots of people,” he continued.

“We know from data that there are a lot of people that only play Call of Duty. And if some of those people decided to get Call of Duty this year via Game Pass, and those very same people took the opportunity to play some other Game Pass games, games they wouldn’t have otherwise played… it’s hard to argue that’s a bad thing.”

Game pass doesn't really make any sense it gives you so much time to not just play the game but to beat it and never play It again

I'm glad I still have the old game pass with day 1 games for only $12 instead of $20.

being forced to buy gamepass to play online/multiplayer games is insane. Why tf do I need gamepass to play Minecraft with two of my friends on a world I made?

Remember this is the guy that mourned the dreamcast dying, this is the same guy that blasted microsoft for studio closures, and acts like he cares about people losing their jobs, then he'll make video saying how xbox is dead and its not worth buying an xbox, so hes promoting the death of xbox which would cause studio closures on a massive scale.

Personally I would buy Indy’s game when it releases on PS5. If only it wasn’t an FPS

PlayStation’s service is cheaper & doing just fine.
The problem is ultimate sucks, there’s not a single game on there worth 20 dollars, let alone $20 a month.
I feel ripped off paying $9.99 a month just to play games online.

Gamepass is iconic and amazing. Haters gonna hate

Microsoft wanted to be the Netflix of gaming. The problems here are multiple. 1. AAA games these days often cost more than movies to make. 2. The success of streaming services depends on continued subscriber growth, and last I checked, Xbox was far behind Sony in install base, and 3. In effect, Game Pass tells you not to buy games. The math of this simply doesn't work. If there are classic games you want to put behind a paywall, I can see people going for that. But first run games day one on Game Pass? That's insane.

It’s all about the money luv from brooknam

I ,like most people buy it for a month then cancel. I would have paid 70 for indiana jones or i can pay less then half a games price and beat a few other games that i wont end up buying.

This was obvious the moment they announced GamePass.

Only morons believed it was a good idea.
@StraightcheD February 7, 2025 - 8:51 pm
Game pass probably ruined it all. If they were going to sell games, they would've been incentivised to make better games on day 1 and the Series would've had a better chance.

GamePass is CANCER.... Its totally destroyed Xbox
@PNW_Elite February 7, 2025 - 8:51 pm
What is Microsofts incentive to close the Xbox division? It is more profitable than Windows and they keep that division open.
@elmasheavy89 February 7, 2025 - 8:51 pm
Microsoft is making the dumbest decisions. They don’t want to have exclusives and they are not selling Xbox consoles.
@thomaswalters597 February 7, 2025 - 8:51 pm
I been saying gamepass is killing Xbox for such a long time, now that I have been proven right i feel bad.

Do any of you fanboys of Playstation or xbox know what a woman looks like naked???
@Gamer-lw9hs February 7, 2025 - 8:51 pm
We need to support xbox. When there is only sony left they will charge so so so much per game, per controller, per console. They will charge 10,000 dollars for a console only worth 500 dollars. We need xbox.
