Donkey Kong Country Returns HD reviewed by Logan Plant on Nintendo Switch.

Somehow, Donkey Kong Country Returns returned… Again… but Nintendo’s third full release of this 2010 Wii platformer is almost as fresh and fun today as it was 15 years ago. DK’s satisfying, weighty movement paves the way for a challenging, momentum-based platformer that demands more skill and precision than the average Nintendo game. But it stays fun rather than frustrating thanks to incredibly impressive level design that explores every clever idea to the fullest and a ton of hidden collectibles worth tracking down. As a remaster specifically, it’s no more than a passable update, with graphics that can only really be described as “good enough” and some outdated elements that could have used more modern touches, like a lack of checkpoints during boss fights and a few obnoxious sections full of one-hit kill obstacles. But Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is still a competent update and easily the best way to play one of the greatest 2D platformers Nintendo has released this century.

I never played a DK game and want to get it but 60€ is a lot to ask when Metroid Prime Remaster got more of a remake treatment than a remaster for 40€. I'm sure the only reason DKCR HD is 60€ is because Nintendo knows how good the game is and that platformers as good as this one are rare nowadays

Just give me a legit remaster of the original DKC trilogy on SNES. DKC 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is my favorite game of all time. To see that game with modern graphics would be insane.

I'm grateful this is coming to Switch, as my Wii version doesn't work. I was told that if you cut the disc into the shape of a Switch cartridge, it would work, but it doesn't.

Theres absolutely no reason to remaster it in had, whether it is just stretched,sharpened or smoothed to HD.
Because those original graphics were slready in HD, so it’s obvious that there wouldn’t be any much differences between the wii and switch version of it qualitywise.
Also why on earth would they come up with a 15 year old game for the switch? It doesn’t add any value to the game or the switch.
If i was nintendo why not just turn those donkeykong country and donkeykong land games into HD for the switch by using those original 3D models from those games before they were converted into low-res 2D tile sets???
Because then you can let new generations experience those old games in a new perspective.
Donkeykong country returns is nothing more then a cash grabbing product.

PSA: Multi-player is ruined. There is no double bouncing on enemies, so good luck getting through some of the harder stages with 2 players.

This is by far the worst aspect of this release.

You can just play the normal 2010 version on dolphin emulator, and you will have the HD for free

Ok so I had a Nintendo in the 80’s but I don’t remeber playing Donkey Kong so now as an adult I bought this and freakin LOVED IT!

The only reason I’d give this game a 8-9 instead of solid 10 is that they didn’t include the Leaderboard for Time Attack just like on Tropical Freeze…..it’s kinda sad actually cuz that’s how I got and still have a crazy amount of hours played on TF, tryna see how many levels I can move up the leaderboard. My two best levels currently rank 39th on Aqueduct Assault 6-3 Also rank 34th on Frosty Fruits 5-6.

Getting gold times is cool n all but what’s going to drive you to keep improving if there’s no competition but the clock…..

Metroid Prime Remastered release price: $40. This: $60. This game should have been $40 at most. Nintendo also never discounts their games so there’s that. Metroid Prime Remastered pricing was a miracle and consumer-friendly, now they’re back to their greedy pricing and the infamous Nintendo tax.

I think the review itself is good, but I think where Nintendo missed the mark is clearly the price. A 1.5 decade old game rehashed for a full price of a brand new experience. On top of that adding the controversy of not including the origin development teams credits while also going after other people for emulation is a bit despicable.

This IGN "reviewer" must be in their 30's or younger if they're complaining about not having check points in a side scroller. I have my doubts he played Classic and stuck with the Journoscum friendly modern mode instead.

I feel he was a little harsh with the graphics critism. To me HD implied it was just getting a resolution boost which i wouldve been fine with but they actually went in and added details and things to make it more of a remaster than an HD which is really cool

Do you guys really want checkpoints within the boss fights? Maybe for easy mode or something but they're like 3-4 minute boss fights.

I love that they call the easy mode "Modern", since it fits the idea that kids can not handle hard video games anymore. Not enough dopamine fast enough if one fails.

People complained about tropical freeze port but at least that added funky kong. This is such a disappointing and lazy release from nintendo
