After experiencing firsthand the effects of suicide in my extended family, I became curious of the human condition and how we could possibly reach a point where we felt that there was no hope.

The thought of someone suffering in silence, feeling alone and feeling like there is no way out breaks my heart.

This video represents that isolated loneliness we can often feel…especially in the wake of traumatic events. But in the end it’s about reaching out for help as well as reaching out to help others. When we connect as human beings, we become stronger, and are able to share and let go of the burden one might feel.

If you or someone you know is going through a difficult time, don’t be afraid to reach out. Life is definitely worth living.

I struggled with being suicidal from late middle school to early college. That scene watching Derek hitting himself in the mirror was something I remember doing a lot back then. The thoughts started as wanting an escape. Then it was encouraged by the feelings of isolation like no one cared. Then the self hatred sets in when you convince yourself youre a nuisance to everyone or that you feel like youre causing nothing but damage. It's a scary combination of feelings to have and it's an impossibly heavy weight to carry. What kept me going is watching other friends descending down the same path and deciding everyday to endure one more day because you want to make sure they're okay. It wasn't a problem solver by any stretch, but it was something.

Then I met my wife. She saw through the strong, dependable facade and allowed me to be weak when I needed to. She let me cry without judgment. That small thing is what started my road to walking away from wanting to end my life.

So that quote at the beginning about wanting to disappear is actually the desire to be found in disguise really resonates. Beautiful video.. I wish music videos still carried meaningful messages like this

Thank you for this. I hope you know this song helped me when I was struggling. A friend of mine committed suicide a couple days ago by jumping off a building and I wish I could have been there to help them like in this video.

I think this is such a powerful song and video. We never know what someone may be going through and if your hurting it can be hard to know what to do. But if your hurting, please reach out for help. I did and that’s why I’m still here today.

My son just committed suicide and the night before he called everyone he loved and talked us all he sounded fine almost happy I would have never thought he was going to kill him self in a few short hours he even got baptized the day before I relive that last phone call over and over trying to think if I missed something was there something he said was there something I could have said or should have said… thank you Derek for this video and the words at the end
