Here’s one for you guys that has been on my list for a while. Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry. This was sent in as a Patreon request some time ago and I have finally found time to do it. I don’t actually know what time of music this would be classed as. To me it sounds like a mixture between Classic Rock and Disco. Whatever it is, it definitely finds a way to get you grooving. I really don’t know how people can hate on music like this. I know that Wild Cherry – Play That Funky Music isn’t going to be for everyone but the song has such a positive vibe to it that It’s hard not to get up and dance to. Please send in some more stuff from Wild Cherry, especially if it sounds like Play That Funky Music!

Another good choice. Essential disco.Yeah, the rhythm guitar is funk, (ironically enough). The sound was invented by James Brown.

Now do Donna Summer I Feel Love. They did it live on Midnight Special, (like this), or the disco single version.

I graduated 1980, my first job was working for CARSON PRODUCTS. I worked in the batching department making DARK & LOVELY hair products and MAGIC SHAVING POWER! I was the only White Boy that worked in this department! I came into work for the evening shift! When I walked into the batching area my co-workers as playing this song on a BIG BOOM BOX! From that day my name became WHITE BOY! This was a name I cherished because it was meant to be accepted as a brother! Love this song, every time I hear it, I honestly SMILE 😊

There's a lot to hit in the Funk genre - of course, there is Funkadelic/Parliament and Sly & The Family Stone. I think your next stop should be Billy Preston (the 5th Beatle - played keyboards on the last couple Beatle albums and was about to be asked to officially join the band just before they broke up). Check out his "Nothing From Nothing."

Yeah, back in '76/'77 when this came out (I was 13/14) was during the disco era but it's more funk and it was one of our most favorite songs to dance to. Great memories!

Funk is a rabbit hole that will lead you through half a dozen other genres. Try Ohio Players (Love Rollercoaster, Funk-O-Nots, and of course Fire). Then Average White Band with Pick Up the Pieces and Tower of Power, with What Is Hip? and Down to the Nightclub. Now that you're happy with horns...
