Defunct Games reviews Tetris Forever by Digital Eclipse, the newest entry in the Gold Master Series. Available November 12 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch and PC.
Tetris Forever is more than a collection of 18 games; it’s a harrowing history lesson into the complicated story of bringing Tetris to the world. It’s also a celebration of the puzzle game, taking us on a guided tour of the evolution of the franchise and its continued relevance in the industry. Through compelling interviews and amazing archival footage, we feel like we’re actually there every step of the way, and all that’s before we’ve played a single game. You don’t have to love Tetris to enjoy this newest entry in Digital Eclipse’s Gold Master Series, but I have a hunch that Tetris Forever will make you fall in love with the story of Tetris.

I'd be a buy, for sure, if New Tetris from the N64 was included. Alas, it is not.
I like Tetris Forever a lot but there’s a bit too much Henk Rogers in the documentary. Aleksei should have been the star! Also the games from Henks BPS aren’t that good. The Spectrum Holobyte games are much better and wellknown. Now that we’ve gotten Welltris in the collection hopefully we’ll still get Super Tetris, Faces and so on from Spectrum Holobyte.
My first tetris was the gameboy one. I played it a fair bit but never loved the game. When I got a 3DS, I got tetris axis and that's what got me tetris fever. I was in college at the time and would play between classes. I experienced the tetris effect for the first time, my eyes were bugging out(probably because of the 3DS' 3D effect) and I would see falling blocks when I closed my eyes.
i played snes tetris and dr mario just the teris part only i love and am addicted to tetris games
The first Gameboy
Cool documentary. When does the review start?
I still want a Richard Garriott edition in the Gold Master Series, and maybe a collection of all the pre-Sims Maxis games.
I think I played the Spectrum Holobyte version first but I might have played a different home computer port. As with the documentary there was a lot of confusion over the rights 😛
No tetrisphere breaks my heart. The game collection is good though
amazing rev
Oof. Rip Tetris Plus 1&2…
I got a cib copy of nes Tetris that one is my favorite
Interesting package. Wish more games would have dev interviews and the like.
QOTD, yep, the gameboy version. Still have my copy.
Finally, Hatris has returned
A shame that the famous versions aren't available, at least not yet- we shall see if DLC eventually makes its way there. Still, the documentary alone makes me want to buy this as it seems Henk has actually done right by Alexey, the original creator, and you don't see that every day.
Also, first Tetris game I played was actually some knock-off handheld that had like, several different games in one. And I played that sucker until the cheap screen stopped showikg the blocks properly. That's the power of Tetris baby.
It looks like there's no Super Tetris (1991) for DOS?? I absolutely loved that game as a kid and would love to play it again, it's been so long and I want to see if it's as good as I remember. Tetris Plus for the PlayStation was another good one.
The Spectrum Holobyte computer version was my first exposure to the virus.
I would love to play Tetris Forever, but there doesn't seem to be a physical version for the Nintendo Switch. Oh well.
It doesn't have the original Tetris Nintendo/Gameboy games? What a big miss.
The first Tetris game I ever played as an MS-DOS shareware Tetris clone called "Double Blocks" released in 1990 by Ernest Yale. And I didn't play it until probably 1995-1996-ish. Considering that I was a "Nintendo Kid" born in 1985 and I grew up with an NES and SNES, I was very late to the Tetris party.
thanks a lot for this review. i was really kinda hyped for this collection, but the fact that they couldn't get the best tetris versions (namely from nintendo) on it is ironic af and disappointing. seems like collection mostly has mid tetris versions and is mostly a documentary, in which case i could just watch those clips on yt.
That is odd that the games they do feature, they kinda yadda yadda yadda over, but go into great details over the ones not featured. It would be like if Monty Python and the Holy Grail spent the most time talking about Sir. Not Appearing In This Film. 😉 As for the question, the first, and actually only one I've played was the NES port. Just wasn't a fan of it, so not bothered to check out any of the others.
Fun fact: even Mortal Kombat made a puzzle game like this called Puzzle Kombat, who expected a fighting game to do that, definitely not me
I played tetris first on the Amiga 1000 around 1985-1988 – don't know the exact year. I played it so much that I saw falling pieces even when I closed my eyes and wasn't playing.
Well, I guess I'm not gonna pick this one up.
perfect????? LOL No
I can only imagine the missing games boil down to licensing? I heard there was a good reason they skipped over the atari/tengen versions, though. but still sounds like another winner from digital eclipse and I'm hoping to pick it up soon! QOTD: it's been so long I really don't recall but I'd imagine either the gameboy version or one of the PC ones that were out at the time?
This makes me a little misty eyed, not going to lie. My late mother was huge fan of Tetris. She had a stand-alone handheld versions of it – multiple, because she literally played it so much the buttons wore off from the original. She would've loved a documentary version like this.
Someone needs to call Sony and have them make a Lemmings collection like this.
It sounds like an A-. Qotd: Gameboy
that's a shame that those classic nintendo versions are missing
I believe it’s been said DLC or updates aren’t off the table
QOTD: I think it was either magical tetris challenge on the gameboy color or Tetris plus on the ps1. Don’t get me wrong GBtris is a classic in its own right but when I was growing up the game boy color had already surpassed the OG and the off shoots of Tetris were in full swing
