Unicorn Overlord reviewed by Eric Zalewski on PlayStation 5, also available on Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
Most of Unicorn Overlord’s issues end up feeling like nothing more than nitpicks. The tactical combat system is unique and complex while also being easy to understand, expertly blending mechanics from many of its peers with smart new additions of its own. The interesting terrain across the continent of Fevrith makes every fight feel unique, with some of the best map gimmicks in any strategy RPG. And because the campaign is told through the eyes of a diverse and creative cast, its tropey fantasy story is elevated in a way that a more traditional storytelling style wouldn’t manage. The shorter, more personal stories work wonderfully to support a loop of exploration and liberation that always leaves you begging to see one more tale told, one more town rebuilt, and one more battle fought.

not on pc and that sucks
About to play but it’s like ogre battle 64 meets Valkyrie profile 2 meets fft?
This game deserves to be on PC too!!
I may be late, but since it was developed by Vanillaware I will get this!
Vanillaware, please bring Muramasa Rebirth to the switch or something just let it get unstuck from the depths of the vita
I still don’t know what the game is about after watching the review. The entire time I’m distracted by the visual of the game, it’s so pretty.
Wait: combat is automated?
Wish it comes to pc
They don't let you be a girl? As a woman gamer, I am not happy about that. I guess this is a skipper. 🙁
Game is $30 on sale now. 50 hours is too much. These companies need to make shorter games imo.
I am glad that SEGA haven’t completely loss the Dragon Force formula. This look like a mix between Dragon Force and Langrisser. Gotta check it out
Maybe I haven't been playing this long enough, but after a few hours my first impression is that there isn't a lot of actual "gameplay" or control of anything.. You equip your forces, organize them, and tell them where to go, but you don't actually get to control them in battle in any way so far that I can tell.. I've played games like DragonForce, Brigandine, FF Tactics, Tactics Ogre, etc.. and they all offer way more control over your forces in battle.. As far as I can tell, all the battles are carried out by the AI and all that you control is just telling your forces where to go?
learn how to say "genre" please
This looks so boring 😑
This looks like a mobile game.
Looks like a mobile game
This game looks great, no wonder it's so expensive on Switch. Watching just a little of this has me sold though.
You can marry your dad. Epic tier game .
Buy the game. It’s vanillaware.
I loved this game until I hated it. Once you get to around the 70% complete mark the game is constantly hitting you with tons of cheating. I had it on the highest difficulty and dropped to normal and I didn't notice a single change in difficulty. I wasn't going to drop to "story" difficulty. It just wasn't fun any more.
The real problem is the over the top rock paper scissors mentality, where units will be completely invincible unless you use that one unit to stop them – and then it's just ridiculous. The row of horses, for example. Completely invincible. All 3 will heal completely every time you hit them. You can't hurt them – unless you use a gryphon then you'll kill all 3 of them in a single hit. Having to keep track of every single strength and weakness of dozens of units is just flat out impossible.
Another problem is that it's way too hard to level your units up. You'll be fighting level 28 enemies when you still have guys that are level 15, because you simply don't have a use for them very often, so you can never level them up. There are a handful of repeatable missions, but you get very little XP from doing it. It's not really worth it. You'll end up with 3-4 units that are really high level and half being really low level.
The time limit is another problem. It exists because they don't want to being able to grind off of respawning enemies (which would have been nice), but sometimes you have way too much time and sometimes you barely have enough. It's really unbalanced, and it can be impossible to know exactly which bases you should be taking over. Some spawn enemies and some won't. You might end up attacking a base that's completely inconsequential – and wasting your time.
The deeper you get, the more the battlefield will be filled with traps, catapults, ballistas, towers etc. Basically, forcing you to take damage to reach enemies just to get to a fight. Even hiding enemies inside of thorns on the ground you're forced to walk through. Literally just draining your heath with no way of you to prevent it.
What made me rage quit was putting a huge amount of effort into fighting the boss, and defeating her – thinking I beat the level, then she just respawns at a different part of the map surrounded by tons of enemies.
At that point, the game just wasn't fun. I had a TON of fun early on, but once the game starts cheating, I tapped out. I'm fine with challenge, but I simply don't understand the game design of just putting players through misery.

This is game is so underrated. The funny part is it’s really overwhelming in the beginning, so you resort to auto optimize everything. Once you discover/learn the nuances, you spent hours and hours tweaking, combating and repeat. You just can’t stop!
Looks like a modern dragon force.
This reminds me of an old psp games, Grand Knight
why on earth is it not on PC …
I don't get why they don't continue the Tactics Ogre games. Or FF tactics.
It really makes you FEEL like a Unicorn.
March of the black queen is my favorite game.i cant wait to try this 😀

The inflections in this review are annoying and try to make this game sound more interesting than it is.
