Talking Watches With Greg Selch, Father To An ‘Orphan’ Watch Collection

Who’s Greg Selch? Well, you won’t find him belting out this summer’s hottest hit on Spotify, nor will he be sinking threes in the NBA. He works in the furniture business and once invested in a company hoping to revive the use of airships in commercial aviation.

What he lacks in name recognition he makes up for in an all-star collection of vintage watches that most enthusiasts typically overlook. And he isn’t just collecting – he’s done quite a bit of scholarship around the watches, too.

Years after meeting him, I finally had the chance to sit down with Selch and thoroughly discuss a few pieces from his collection of what he calls “orphan watches,” or to put it more generously, watches that don’t have a large following. At least not yet.

Watch the episode and see if he can convince you why they should.

What is this movie

@KevinnGomez January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Not one Rolex , not one patek, not even an omega. And the man is so proud of his collection and doesn’t even want the big brands.

@antonioramalhete6441 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

This is, without any doubt, the best Talking Watches up untill now with the possible exception of Jean-Claude Biver. Less "Rich Boy Stars" and more commun and very uncommun very savy peole and collectors like Mr. Greg Selch ! Amazing interview ! Congratulations ! More of these, please !

@LordTRight January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Great video and collection! Finally – no Pateks, Rolexes, APs…

@thehumador January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

does anyone know the watch that is in the open box on the right hand side from the perspective of the hosts, the one with the white face and the tan bands

@denizates6384 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Lovely episode, finally someone appeals to middle class. Thanks Mr Selch.

@med-3000 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Wonderful collection. These obscure gems are where watching collecting gets really fun and exciting. A history lesson. Thank you.

@ShabbaRanksMF January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Hands down this is the best one.

@boombringer4078 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Greg is awesome!! hes like the pied piper of horology!!

@billbargar2284 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

This is true collecting ! Speaks volumes of horology .

@jacekmalejko1309 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Best episode EVER!

@sagittjm8641 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

A true collector.An interesting, humble, unique collection and a knowledgable watch lover. Not just somebody collecting the same three brands.

@MottiCohen January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

The best episode ever on talking watches

@berare777 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

My favorite episode of “Talking watches”.😊

@RubyMarkLindMilly January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Know this is interesting anything is better than harping on about Rolex even though i love Rolex

@jdmrtnz9367 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Absolutely love this episode

@mariocairo1 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Finally! Someone interesting and dedicated to watches… A guy who dig under surface and brings reports full of knowledge. True watch collector, first time that someone introduce watches like Enicar Sherpa, Favre-Leuba etc. I wish that Hodinkee focus more on guys like this instead of boring Rolex-Patek Nautilus -AP royal oak collectors who are so boring and don't show any deep knowledge about watches

@raduflorin6154 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

This episode is truly amazing , the fact that they are worn and unrestored , tells a great story , i have been watching a lot of watch videos , but i have never seen anything this genuine , till now , and i have learned some new things !!

@ricardoskerrett197 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

I keep coming back to this one. It's like a movie for me about the real joy of collecting. This is the good stuff!

@Rog5446 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Bumper winder in a Pole-Router, Really? I thought Pole-Routers had micro rotors.

@chavesphoto January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Best Talking Watches Episode!!!

@Shamallama25 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

At 3:14 there is a 24 dial watch. I would love to know what watch this is. @hodinkee

@jolness1 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

This was fun. I haven't seen several of these before. Vintage stuff is so fun.

@differentxminds9907 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

I clicked this on a whim and this it has to be one of the best episodes of Talking Watches. I have a lot of research to do after seeing this!

@notyourdaddy8300 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Great episode! What I love about some of these lesser known defunct brands is that basic time only pieces are very affordable. I have a nice Doxa and a Favre-Leuba, each cost less than $100. My big purchase will be a vintage Junghans chrono soon.

@deegz January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Based on those two trays……we might need a part 2 😀

@jackominty3633 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

"Would you rather have this …or a Sub?"
Cue manky rust-bucket from a nobody, also-ran producer.
"This, of course"

Sorry to be mean, but what color is the sky in your world? 🤣😂
It's perfectly understandable why these as "super rare".

Another good one is "This is the opposite of a Calatrava".
For a brief moment, we can agree. 🤣😂

For all you po-faced haters out there, don't bother. I'm just having some fun.

Puts me in mind of how the Art World were wowed by Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain" in 1917.

God only knows what Archie Luxury would have to say if he was commissioned to do a paid review.
I'm half tempted to throw him $50 to find out.

@superfast30 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

I cant unsee the hair on the seconds of the doxa!

@emsmith2519 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Awesome video, thank you so much for that, loved it!

@artemface January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Loved his knowledge especially about the Zenith on the island… gasket is sick

@Spectrumpicture January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

This is a good episode – very unique pieces!

@Toaster_luvin January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

This is so much better than looking at the same three pateks over and over again

@cezarb4047 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

One of my favourite episodes. Patek and Rolex aren’t the only collectible brands!

@fadz200 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

My attitude to watch collecting changed after watching this, a true collector

@jt_olakunle January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Otherworldly watches. This is impressive!

@brettbambouturton3117 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

A real collection of great watches.

@jhonwatchcollector7477 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

@peterzwegat5380 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

great guy

@seanang7845 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Love this , finally a real collection that a he says shows knowledge , no just the atypical Rollie , patek & such. Really interesting .

@simplewelshman January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Did anyone else notice the Pelikan 400 fountain pen?

@adrianobanak2824 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Finally a true watch collector who doesn't give a flying f..k for a sport steel rolex.

@robhaley802 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Wow! Who is this guy? I loved this!

@joev6049 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Finally an actual enthusiast and not just a “let me roll out the same watches you’ve seen in every video and call it my watch collection” video. Those types might as well just open their wallet and say here’s my watch collection. This guy is passionate. His character shows in his collection and that’s a true collector.

@gingeralejones7340 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Greg is a very nice guy. Happy to see this.

@Lalitaditya100 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

Anyone noticed the presenter here looks a lot like the pride and pinion guy?

@markbradshaw7753 January 4, 2025 - 11:58 am

How refreshing.
I am so tired of the Rolex thing.All these pieces are lovely and you said the key when you said “design element”
Wonderful collection,
