The Dying Art of PS2 Mod Chips, BUT . . .
PlayStation 2 mods have come a long way. Soft modding especially, like Free McBoot, has made improving the capability of the PS2 very approachable. However, not long ago, the primary mod done to a PS2 was the installation of a mod chip. There were many that were developed that evolved over time to counter Sony’s attempt to thwart them. So, is installing a mod chip in your PS2 worth it nowadays? Let’s find out!

The best ps2 mod chip is DMS4 mod chip all others are clones from this !
Is only my opinion.
So I need this mod chip to play US games DISCS on my Japanese ps2? I just want to load them with free mcboot OPL
My old ps2 is actually serving as a pc with a linux install. Its been modded of course as it was modded before i retired it from a game console to a pc. (Its just for email and office work)
I do my gaming on my phone now, since i can take it anywhere.
I used to have a modded PS1 Slim back in 2002-2003. There was a store in my town that did it in shop. Playing burned and Japanese games was awesome.
I have a modbo 5.0 on my PS2 Slim 70K, the two issues I have had with the chip is i cant boot grimdoomers Exfat version of OPL from a USB/boot menu (I have to boot from a memory card which contains GD's OPL) AND the memory card manager "Apollo" straight up wont work my chipped system
If we put this chip inside the device, will it cause heat problems or put pressure on the device in general? Or could it negatively affect the motherboard?
Hi there! Maybe you won't see this comment but interested on looking for the Mars Pro HD chip, I saw that 806HD is not compatible with my FAT 50004 one, is that right?
I think I would need the 816HD one for my console but yours 806HD seems to work fine on the FAT right?
So confused right now, thanks!
I think especially for a fat PS2 at this point (even 2 years ago in 2022 when the video was posted) with the ease of soft modding with FreeMCboot / FreeHDboot and either an internal hard drive or MX4SIO to store and boot games from any region, it kind of makes these old hard mods unnecessary. Plus by loading your games off of some kind of non-disc storage you won't wear out the laser assembly at all – or you can revive a console with a dead laser.
Where can you buy a Mars Pro though? Finding a modchip in 24 is hard lol
I did my mod so long ago I can't remember which chip I used. Seems to me is pressed down on the Bois chip? I think it was called solderless install
Hi sir, just purchased a Ps2 Slim and I wasn't informed by the seller that the unit is matrix modded my question is can I add free mcboot on it? Even if it has a Matrix Chip?
I hate emulation, and Im also poor. I want my ps2 to play ps1 backups.
Question. So regardless if I play a ps1 ntsc or Japanese import I still need to double click the reset button to boot into ps1 mode but if I swap back to ps2 games do I need to do the same method with resetting twice? Also, regarding the bios menu function not being available in 12:00 do you mean the ps2 bios menu? is that still not present with mars pro modchip in the fat models? I ask because I want to be able to still boot into freemcboot before having this chip installed in my 37000 blue oceanic ps2 jpn model. 😁
waste of time, can just use mechapawn elf on any slim ps2
Hi, Im slowly purchasing soldering equipment. I wonder – which wires are use for project like this?
Its not working 😢. I have funny feeling they didn’t put one in.
I got ps2 modd chip from china.can u helped
can the Mar Pro GM-806HD modchip be installed using the diagram of GM-816HD?? or not sinc ei could'nt find a diagram for 806hd? for the v9 or v10
This is why emulators are popular, no need to spend $3000 on old ass consoles and games
am i the only one that misses the rerez name and logo
I can run ps2 emulator on any snapdragon 8 gen 2 android and connect it to tv with ps5/4 controller 😂 much better experience both at home and on the go
Question here:
Is it possible to replace a modchip for another? I have a really old chip (not even Matrix, yes that old) and I want to replace it with a Mars or Matrix. Is it possible?
Do u helped other people put a modchip played burn disks games?
So basically soft modding wins again. Not only won't soft modding brick the PS2, it's also much easier. And sure it's almost like art in how creative you get with cable management, but it also brings an other thing to take attention, leading to something like soldering it in on the wrong pin and frying the PS2.
Why not Modbo 5.0 chip? It’s easy to find documents on install and works great.
i had a Fat PS2 and my Dad who was an expert solderer installed a mod chip, i forget which, and despite an excellent job the chip botched the console, since that incident i have always sought software solutions for console homebrew and aside from the xbox 360 i don't know of a console that can't run homebrew without a modchip
Would this mod chip allow for running PSX backups without utilising the emulator that OPL requires?
Is there any advantage of adding a chip to a FreeMcboot console. Like does it increase the compatibility list of games run on OPL or enhance something?
I had a "chipped" brick PS2 . It played import DVDs and games . The OS was on a memory card . Then the videogame BLACK came out . Beware the game reformatted my memory card and erased the OS . Since the chip is still in the console it only plays American games .
You didn't even answer the question in the title of the video. You just installed a modchip and did exactly the things people woulda done when the PS2 was still relevant.
Most people will not be able to do the solder work, very nice work. Attention to detail, wires routed nicely. Kapton tape !
God i love initial D
matrix infinity since 2011
