This was the Lake Placid Olympics. New York state
I do not think that you understand. During THIS particular game, NOBODY FORGOT about what was going on outside of Lake Placid. This is the point of Miracle on Ice. Since you were not educated in a structured school system on the world history of the 1980s, watch Miracle and ARGO back to back. Btw, it includes the UK and political results of WWII. Churchill was right.
I was watching at home…it was so exciting! Check out the movie made about this game, titled Miracle.
WHEN COLLEGES HAD PATRIOTISM 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 NOT NOW THE COMMUNIST HAVE OUR COLLEGES
Happened on my 23rd Birthday and I can still name all of the players on the US team!
Sorry this is late, but also wanted to throw out another small favt about this if it hasn't been mentioned, is that 2 weeks prior to this match, USA and Russia had played an exhibition game that USA lost 10 – 3. That makes this even more amazing in Mt opinion
Most people think that team USA beat the Russians for the gold in 1980. They didn't. That wasn't even the gold medal game. They still had to win one more game against Finland. Finland jumped on top early in the game, but the US came from behind and won the gold. That occurred two days later. People forget that because this game was so huge.
The team had no idea they were carrying the hopes and dreams of a nation on their backs. They really had no idea the game was as popular or as meaningful at the time.
you can see after the tie in the 1st period the American team come alive, they were not afraid anymore, they knew they could hang with the Soviets, they knew they could win. They got aggressive and started throwing the Russians around.
I was actually working in an ice skating arena on the West Coast at that time. That Friday night was insane, what people often forget is that that was NOT the gold-medal game. They still had to play Finland, and the way the points were, because of the USA's early tie against Sweden, if they hadn't a beat Finland Not only would they not get the gold, they would not have medaled AT ALL. On Sunday the 24th it was my job to come in and resurface the ice between the second and third periods for our local double-a team, the West Covina Eagles. Even though the team had paid for the ice, nobody was playing because somebody had brought a little 13 inch portable black and white TV and everybody was watching the USA/Finland game!
Anyone who wondered, February 22, 1980. The birth of "USA! USA! USA!"
That game was at 2 am and I was watching it. This didn’t even give the US the gold medal. They still had to play Finland.
Goose bumps every time, and I am Canadian!! It was a great game!!
BEST GAME I EVER WATCHED 🇺🇸
It is a very accurate statement, the Americans weren’t given a chance of beating the Russians. I believe it was the one moment all Americans were on the same page. It was glorious, unbelievable, and uplifting. as someone stated in another comment the name Mike and Eruzione will never be forgotten to any American alive then even those who weren’t Hockey fans.
The time and place where the chant, "USA! USA!" was born.
The USSR had beaten the US the previous week in an exhibition game the week before. 10-3
I remember this happening!! Great video and reaction!! Thrilling to see it again!
Two weeks prior to this game, The Soviets waxed our youngsters 11-3. They also blew out an NHL All-Star team. Nobody thought this could happen…..Except for Herb Brooks, those exceptional young men! I was 10 years old. My family went nuts! Jumping and screaming around the house. Then the neighbors came out in the street. My dad and a neighbor had been feuding for years. They toasted beers, high fived, hugged it out. They remained dear friends after that. This game really did bring people closer together.🇺🇸👍🏼✌🏼
It's important to note that this is more impressive because the USA was blown out by Russia acweek or so earlier. I think it was 10 to 1 or something like that
I watched it as a college student. it was uplifting to everyone.
I'll never ever forget my very witty, yet reserved Dad actually tearing up at the end. 1st time I ever saw him show that much emotion. We wondered how they fit the entire team on that podium! Just shows how close they were as a team!!! I've been an avid hockey fan ever since!
I know this is 2 years old… but you said.. tell me where you were during this moment… Well.. I was in my mother's belly at the time.. that's where I was! lol.. anyways.. great reaction
Im just 13 but i love this movie
