Why You Should Buy A PS3 (Backwards Compatible) With A PS5

Sony’s had a shaky history with backwards compatibility, and thankfully PS5 handles it beautifully for PS4 games. But right up to launch and even now, everyone is asking for PS3, PS2, and PS1 support. In an ideal world you’d only need one console, but since that’s not gonna happen.. how about two? In fact, I’d argue that’s a really great setup. Two consoles, 27 years of games at your fingertips. Let’s talk about what PS3 models you should look at, the compatibility you can expect, and why hardware reliability might be a thing of the past. Oh yes.. there will be games. (Awful movie reference, but I couldn’t think of anything clever).

I want a ps3 fat but man the maintenance and always worrying about it breaking is stressful. I have a ps3 slim and it lasted forever. So I think I’ll just get a ps2 just to be safe.

I had to come back to this video because I FINALLY got a backwards compatible PS3 at an estate sale. It's in insanely good condition. I took it apart to clean it and replace the thermal paste and it was so clean I couldn't believe it. I broke the warranty stick and the thermal paste was hard (it was the original white paste as well) so I know I was the first person inside the console. The new thermal paste is on and I'm enjoying upscaled, widescreen PS2 games on my Sony X90.

Backwards compatible PS3 + any PS5 + PSP with UMD drive + PS Vita gives you access to the entire PS library

My compromise is a slim ps3 and a ps5. There aren't that many ps2 games I'm interested in which don't have HD remasters on PS3

Small correction! It actually isn’t generally the capacitors that cause permanent YLODs, but rather a faulty substrate in the ps3’s cell processor that caused connections to break after excess thermal cycles.

For PS2 and PSX compatibility it is best to get early fat PS2 as later models didn't support 240p/288p correctly. PS3 also has this issue and you are also limited to either 480i or 576i with PAL consoles having the issue where at least PS3 games/programs will actually run in 60Hz internally with image processed down to 50Hz with some kind of motion interpolation. Not all these limitations might apply and for e.g. U.S. only games on HDMI devices first PS3 is actually one of the best ways to play games but for CRT certainly PS3 is not the best.
Also while at it: for PSX games I would also recommend avoiding first PSX models due to dithering bug. Late PSX models and early PS2 models are the best for PSX games.

Than after the ps3 and ps5, buy a ps vita and mod it and put adrenaline and now you covered all the playstation consoles.

Ah so that was why I had to download PS2 Classics on my newer PS3 with Hen. It's how it was able to read it. Didn't know that was why specifically

For everybody reading this now and in the future, the NEC TOKIN capacitors are NOT the actual leading cause of death for backwards compatible PS3s. It's more often the defective 90nm GPU, which can be replaced thanks to the Frankenstein mod. Just wanted to clear up that outdated misinformation.

I own a E01 with a rare firmware of 2.70 with PS Home , a Silver Japan 1st gen PS3 , another White Japan 1st gen , a 2nd gen PS3 for my main to play , another 2nd gen modded on EvilNat , My glittery White PSP , PS4 Pro Glacier White , My PS5 & that's how I can play any game gen I want offline or online solo or with friends/family . I have more collection but this just my PS items 💯🔥

i understand the whole point to have just the 3 and 5 for pretty much anything but still get 1 and 2 just for the sake of at the LEAST hearing the start up sounds. ps3 start up sound is epic but the 1 and 2 is just. 🤌

Regardless of the PS3 model you own, you should absolutely keep it around. Even non-backwards compatible consoles can play PS2 discs now with a few workarounds made possible by HEN and it's compatible with the vast majority of the console's library. Sony clearly isn't going to make disc-based backwards compatibility happen on the PS5 at this point so keeping a PS3 around if you want to play your old discs through an HDMI display is essential.

The only thing about the backwards compatible PS3 is: how does one make it region free for PS1 & PS2 games? I know that PS3 games are mostly region free. I'd love to play Japanese imports on an original PlayStation 3. I just got a PS5 for my 30th birthday on Sunday. Now, I just need to get my hands on a backwards compatible PlayStation 3 to complete my setup.

This video is a little outdated on the fat PS3 reliability. The capacitor change does not always fix the yellow light of death. I have one per console and backwards compatible or not, it is best ot play the games on the original system they were intended if u can than you play em as such.
