Metaphor: ReFantazio Review

Metaphor: ReFantazio reviewed by Michael Higham on PC, also available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

There’s a certain familiarity to Metaphor: ReFantazio, but Atlus takes the principles of its already excellent RPGs and refines them in a way that effortlessly ushers you through its brutal, and sometimes whimsical, fantasy world. The Archetype system brings satisfying progression along with all the new wrinkles added to the turn-based combat  for some great hard-fought battles, and the social elements are streamlined to better deliver the most important aspects of the stories they tell. And for all its cliches, there’s a powerful sense of purpose behind this adventure. I felt a unique warmth in its message, because it’s driven by the ideals of a just society and smartly contextualized in surprising ways. Metaphor: ReFantazio is poetic, and at times, idealistic, but it also understands its complexities and that change requires action, and that even far-fetched fantasy stories can serve as inspiration to make our world a better place.

Definitely one of the best RPGS I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning and playing

I almost bought this game before I found out there are some "time limits" in it. I hate being time limited in games, especially jrpgs, so I gave up with it.

I'm so glad I picked this up instead of Dragon Age The Veilguard

It looks like something that was released 20 years ago, and it seems like you spend most of the time sitting around watching the game rather than playing it. Who wants to sit around watching dialogue in a game? That's what movies are for.

Is this only a turned based game?

I can’t play 100+ hours playing a game where an annoying fairy speaks for the main character. Just give the protagonist a name and let them be a fully fleshed out character. Silent and semi silent protagonists just don’t work.

Can always count on IGN to say too much and literally say nothing at the same time. I came to watch a review, not "IGN reporters 5k word essay for 90% of his class grade".
Say it in less bro. Nobody's got time for you to channel Tolkien if he had brain damage.

I think it could be argued that metaphor may be on par with the stories of the other ATLUS games, but I can see why a person would prefer one over the other. However, I think it’s uncontroversial to say metaphor is the most mechanically refined out of all of the SMT/Persona-esque titles, and this is both in and out of the combat system.

Idealistic, mentioned over and over. Revolutions are the ideology of the reaalists - the materialists. Idealism which you mention over and over has nothing to do with ideology, but it describes idealism, which is the opposite of materialism as a philosophical aspect of things. "Idealism is the metaphysical view that associates reality to ideas in the mind rather than to material objects. It lays emphasis on the mental or spiritual components of experience, and renounces the notion of material existence." Religions are idealistic, while science is materialism. So the ideology of social revolutions is the historical science of the dialectical materialism of the evolution of human societies. This whole review in the end has absolutely wrong results. I suggest studying on dialectical materialism.

This game looks amazing but I still haven’t finished Persona 5 Royal yet, I was wondering if I should still get this game or not?

I'm not gonna lie, for the sole reason that the main male character is wearing a hairband, I'm not gonna play this game. This is like a male 2B with no body. Hard pass. Who tf thought it was a good idea to make a male character wear a fucking hairband? PASS.
