It’s been over 6 months since the PS portal came out and If there’s one thing to take away from my time with it its this: After using the PlayStation portal for a long period of time. I can say I was VERY wrong with my initial opinions.

UPDATE: It looks like in the next day or so, the PlayStation Portal will receive an update to allow for public WiFi sign in.

Do you think the portal is worth buying?

when I saw the news about it I just made fun of it. I always used backbone.
I got my own PS portal 2 days ago and now I am obsessed. It is just so different from mobile gaming in general. I also have a switch and the ps portal is just a whole other level of quality gaming than any handheld I have ever used in my life.
I'm so happy I got it!

Got the portal for my kids Christmas gift and it doesn't work at all!! Walk out of my bedroom and it disconnects!! I was lied to at the store that sold it AND they claimed I could take this anywhere, now...
Well... My son has to take it to his mom's house... Total returning this high priced junk!!

I really appreciate this review, it goes over the struggles that I went through with the backbone and alternatives,
I’m definitely going to try out a Portal, especially now that some of these issues have been fixed!

Why did sony choose to only let the Portal have the PS Plus Beta? I just bought the Lenovo Legion Go and sure i was able to access the PS plus game streaming but I'm missing Demon Souls and other titles

I know they already introduced a web browser for sign ups on wifis, but just wanted to tell back then you were able to cennect your phone to that wifi then sign in and use your phones Hotspot as a repeater for the wifi not your mobile data.

Phones are to small for streaming PS5 games. 16:9 content on modern super-tall smartphones looks bad.

I got portal with Sony Ear Buds, its perfect but I couldn't set it up with LAN only and not using it without internet, see My country is under heavy Sanctions both from west and GOV itself and not be able to use it without the Internet is a bummer for me.
Also I wish It could have it's own very light games, due to the internet issue I mentioned sometimes I cannot even login or the lag is so much the game is unplayable at all.
I recommend to connect PS5 via cable to your router that way the lag is less.

A portal isn't for a household with more than one gamer under the same roof. It's ridiculous. Me and my daughter game on our console, so this won't make any difference, I'd still need another ps5 cause we use a separate tv anyways for gaming. They should've just made a vita.

Constructive criticism… please play real games. Astros room for the love of god is for the children, and respectfully speaking casual gamers. Most people buying this aren’t casually gaming. So why not just play AAA games that have high demand so we can see it at its best or limits. F**K Astros playroom.

The only issue I have with the backbone is the phone case. I have to take off the case to use the controller

Not being able to change the bit rate is the reason the portal fails most folks. Even with a WiFi 7 router I still have issues with the portal.

The portal is absolutely worth it. Chiaki4deck is pretty great and where I started too. But after a while, it loses connection and then you have to disconnect and reconnect again. The backbone is ok but not my first option.

The issue is simple though. If you have a PS5 with an Xbox and Xbox game pass account with cloud gaming the backbone destroys the portal. Matter of fact you don’t even need an Xbox. The portal is essentially a very expensive one trick pony that is best used at home. Don’t get me wrong if you are a tech person like myself and enjoy the portal that’s fine. Nothing wrong with that or really the portal. It’s just not much.

7:47 the hotspot issue isn’t that bad. I use my company phone that gets unlimited data and has great connection. Even my phones hotspot works fine for it
