Dean must’ve been on something

@captheobbyist6434 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

in defense of Dean, as a far as i know, that was a single occurence.
have people checked his other game reviews?
judging the entire journalist's career and the industry as a whole because of a single funny joke video is wrong.

@Mr-eightfivefour December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

This reminds me of Deadlock that Matpat discussed a few years ago.

@ultraPATIS December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

Short answer: they're not gamers

@MrAwesome457 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

I don’t think being bad at cuphead is anything to be ashamed of.

@pepsiboydystopia December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

I mean, you are right that obviously game journalists have certain expectations that prevent them from enjoying the game the way regular players do, but this isn't an excuse. It's their job to be decent at videogames. If my job as a line cook is to cook dishes at a restaurant, I can't very well excuse my actions after I burn a client's steak, by going "oh but the client has all the time in the world to cook a steak at home, while I have to cook under pressure". They are a GAMES journalist, not a games JOURNALIST, it's a requirement of the job to have some experience with games, and if they have spent their entire lives without ever touching a platformer, if they didn't so much as play a Mario game in their childhood, why the hell are they reviewing a platformer? What authority does this person have compared to me to review a game and tell me how I should feel about it? These expectations and excuses aren't expected out of any other types of journalists, in fact, they are extremely rigorous with their ethics in other areas. There are no professional movie critics who would try and watch a movie, without understanding basic concepts of storytelling, only to get stuck at the fucking studio logos because they can't understand their significance to the plot.

@amiz1372 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

But really who plays games based off what journalist say, its word of mouth 9/10

@RealBunchaGames December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

I just watched a 5 year old dash in cuphead faster than a game journalist

@viveillyvi December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

Two words: Learning curve

Practicing playing games is one thing, but there is one factor that changes stuff a lot: Your intelligence.
The main thing about being smart is learning quickly and having a fast reaction time. Before Playing Dark Souls, my only experience with video games was mario kart and mario party on the nintendo ds
I first tried multiple bosses. I played Elden Ribg shirtly after and first tried the godskin duo, one of the hardest bosses in the game. I beat Malenia after only 2 deaths. The list goes on and on.
Practice is one thing, but some people are just abled to learn a lot quicker than others, its just how it is. Am I arrogant for saying this? Probably.
Now look at these people. How much does a game journalist make? Really not much. If thats your carrier, i kind of doubt that you're a smart person, respectfully.
Im pretty sure someone that studied medicine or something will be at a much, much higher skill level with the same amount of practice a game journalist has

@stonetrollLou December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

conclusion: bad gameplay makes people mad and want to beat the game thus more downloads thus more money

@Bdcrock December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

After seeing Dean’s picture, I kind of feel bad for everyone calling him trash

@IAmJustYannick December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

why cant we stop with game journalists?

@thatguy5233 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

all i'm getting from this video is that their reviews are not just useless, but even harmful. i'll stick to watching someone who i know will take the time to appreciate the game AND is competent in the genre, and there's TONS of such people on yt for example.

@blacky_Ninja December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

Well, if the gaming journalism system doesn‘t allow for an opinion that fits the quality of the game, what use does it really have?
For the players the value is practically non existent. Steam reviews does a better job with no effort for anyone.

@billyshaw1996 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

In all fairness to the games journalists difficulty is subjective & whilst you might be incredible at one genre you might suck at another. I have beaten Dark Souls 3, Sekiro & Elden Ring several times, but I absolutely sucked in the beginning, at least at the first two. Sekiro was my first souls game & despite it humbling me a ridiculous amount I fell in love with the combat & wanted to improve. Cuphead on the other hand does not interest me: I can appreciate its art style, but unless it's Kirby I genuinely do not care much for 2-D/3-D platformers & would likely suck at it. Sometimes difficulty in games can be fun & sometimes it feels awful; if you're being forced to play games you might not like you will obviously not rate it as highly as someone who has sought it out.

@ferretman6790 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

Journalists in general suck at being journalists

@demilung December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

Why is simple: they don't have time or desire to learn the games. When I came across the final boss of Sekiro I excitedly ran it again and again, learning all the hints and moves, paying attention, dedicating almost a whole day to being good at video game sword fighting.
When Jonny Journo comes across the same boss and can't beat it, he's just frustrated. He ain't got time to learn, the review is due Thursday! He doesn't even like the game, he's doing it because it's his job. He didn't choose to play it for fun like the consumers will, he has to get through it and say something about it so that he can keep pretending that reviewing is the same as journalism.

@Azraiel213 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

Everybody knows games journalists aren't gamers anymore.

@kubak1592 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

In my opinion eldenring is overrated I had much more fun with darksouls 3 or sekiro

@spectraldragon09 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

My favorite review ive seen lately is Doom Eternal The Ancient Gods where some guy was playing like it was CoD. Didn't even try and dodge hits just stood there and took it while shooting into this cyberdemon

@miguelcrafter2997 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

2:33 this is one of those types of gamers who never read dialogue and than are wondering what to do next

@Nickle_King December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

You're missing a crucial part of the equation that makes your whole thesis moot. Gaming has been around for long enough for these journalists to understand that they may not get to finish the games they review. Ok. Question.

Why doesn't that factor into their reviews?

Also. Why does a review have to come out the moment the releases? When did that standard get set? I'll tell you when it got set. By movies. Movie reviews come out, at latest, day after the premier. Because movies are only 3 and a half hours long at max. So that's what people were used to when it came to review timetables.

Games don't work like that. So why do we hold them to that standard?

Answer? Because the mainstream gaming journalist outlets didn't want to. For longer games like Final Fantasy, that's somewhat understandable. When a game takes a month to complete, that really is too late to be useful. But what about games that don't?

There is a reason critic channels like Mauler's took off. Agree with him or not, Mauler puts extensive work into dissecting the media he's covering. And it takes a LOT of time. But people love it. Games journalists need to learn from that. For longer games, don't just have a single review. Have a running review, broken up into chapters. Comment on the segments in a game. The intro, the gameplay loop, the twist, the ending.

A review from someone who played 2 hours of a FromSoft game is meaningless. It barely scratches the surface. But to then explain that we should sympathize with the Journalists because the way in which they're doing their job is inherently flawed and wrong does not help anything. If something doesn't work, you don't keep doing it.

and this isn't even touching the politics, attempted manipulation, paid off companies, or blatant unprofessionalism that has infested that industry.

@Cinetiste December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

If you find this play of Cuphead surprisingly awkard you should be careful to comment the play of a child, because a jumping dash at the right height requires a coordination far from obvious for a neophyte.

I of course comprehend that a video game journalist may be a title requiring some knowledge, however games nowadays are often difficult, vast, complicated, quick; we simply acquired the skills.

@Cinetiste December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

…a bold assessment, a displaced vocabulary, a stereotype as you said, an affirmation without regard of what level of skill can be seen as a reference.

@vfhrgdgd8983 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

the game too hard😢
the game too hard😀

@TheRomonator December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

5:30 okay hear me out the super Mario bros games are REALLY hard like it often takes me more tries to beat a level then the amount of tries it takes to beat an elden ring boss I had a much easier time beating Celeste then most Mario games

@Worldwide_Web21 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

They are so bad that it looks like they have never touched a kbm or a controller in their life. Do not try to cover up their skill issue.

@FeelingPoyChina December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

8:16 you're absolutely right.. getting good at a SPECIFIC game takes time.. but this is not what this video is about..
Dean wasn't tryin to get good at cuphead, he was trying to get good at GAMING! THATS WHAT MESSED UP HERE!
cause anyone who has ever played more than 5 or 6 games knows how to make that jump and knows how natural the controller or kb+mouse feels in their hands
this man can not be a gamer if the basic tutorial is like a boss fight for him! even my mom is better than him cause HE'S NOT A GAMER!
SO WHY IS HE REVIEWING GAMES?

@MadTawnyOwlet December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

A week, hell even a few days seems like more than enough time to finish or at least formulate an opinion on most games though (especially if it is your job)… Besides like RPGs a majority of games have between 10 to 30 hours worth of content, even if you just played at least half of what the game had to offer, that should be enough content for you to form a presentable judgement and fair criticisms.

I don't think these instances of questionable game-play should be held against them for their entire careers, however it is their job, if I performed that poorly at what I did for a living, I don't think my opinion in that area of expertise would be viewed as entirely valid.

@Lyrxial December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

That IGN review on how Resident Evil 5 needed a whole new reboot because it was racist

@MichaelYT23 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

There should be a difficulty named "Game Journalist Mode" where the game plays for you.

@Memo-b8q December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

Deans gameplay looks like its an aı trying to learn how to play

@JustAChannel5 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

(Almost) New at your channel, it seems like you realy like calamity's and just terraria's music, also great videos you should realy have more subscribers.

@sniper7303 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

Question for all of you guys. How many games have you beaten in under thirty hours. Because I have beaten a few of games in under thirty hours. Such as Forager, slime rancher , doom 2016, doom eternal, fallout nv (maybe i forgot), portal 1/2 and cuphead. Just wondering :3

@Boretooth December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

Because they're not actual gamers.

@erarusios December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

YAAAAS ULTRAKILL AT SCREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

0:49 Meanwhile the sonic unleadhed reviewer

@niksereshtparsi December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

I play with my 5 year old brother and he is batter than this people

@fakeman6542 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

You made a case in defense of game reviewers, but honestly it doesn’t hold. Sure the timelines are tight to get the piece written, but good god there is some serious incompetency. Difficult games are games like any other, reviewers should understand how these games have a place in the industry. Sorry but bad take.

@jkratosgear3038 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

1:14 clever difficulty? The worst rng in the entiry history of videogames you find in Cuohead xd

@MHA01 December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

This is why I just look at Steam reviews rather the Journalists because at least the steam reviews are honest and there is more than one review to look at before making my decision.

@GuySmithSmoke December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

1 week 8 hour work day. That's plenty of time.

@PrinceDinoboy December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

My "favorite" example of this was the Sonic Frontiers Gameplay Preview from IGN. They never boosted and rarely even ran. They made the game look SLOOOW, when it is far from it.

@freXampl December 3, 2024 - 5:26 pm

When you study journalism you'll become a journalist obviously not a game journalist. For that you also need to have a history with gaming.
