Exposing BIAS in Game Review Scores

by admin

Looking at Metacritic Data we can quantify what types of games reviewers are more biased towards.
From Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom to The Last Of Us, reviewers are biased towards some games more than others.
Scraped metacritic data. You can download and view here. Note these are PC games but the data was applied across systems under the assumption that the same trends would apply. https://mega.nz/file/27xyyAqB#mtcaom8FCXR7q22lxuEzTBgTbVznl1n9xcL-yDRu6rE
The exception being 3D platformers which I used by comparing the scores of games from this list which I felt was more comprehensive https://gameranx.com/features/id/139851/article/every-3d-platformer-ever-made/

"hey ign! my finger can transform, guess which one. i'll give you a limited option"

@ellagage1256 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

Okay to be fair Crash 4 definitely has infinite lives because of how hard Toys for Bob made the game rather than reviews but I still get the point you're making.

@el_palito45 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

as a student of game development, this is depressing. no form of art should be chained by things like biases , deadlines, or money.
im never surrending myself to the things mentioned in this video, and hope the gaming space has some very needed changes, starting with removing the most greedy pests from it

Game journalists when the game doesn't play itself: dated mechanics

@bicarbonateofsoda117 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

4 years ago before a lot more women got involved in the gaming industry, in terms of reviewing. Also the whole pronoun, esg, dei woke shit wasnt a thing 4 years and more prior to this video. The gaming industry is a lot more skewed now to gaming reviews, journalists, YouTube content creators being favourited and getting to go to a lot of special events (skewing the review to positive), protection from criticism (EA banned a youtuber who criticized the reviewer of dragon age veilguard) and also not giving early review codes to review reviewers who criticized the preview of games.

Cyberpunk should have set off a lot of flags. Overhyped and very selective review process. Gaming now hates pretty realistic looking women, they change the face models to be ugly and manly. All women are strong black (mostly) female characters and the villains are white men. Uncharted 4 was bad for introducing strong black female women to beat to full grown men at once.

Cast of characters are gay, bi trans and thats their only defining feature. Look at dragon age veilguard. My dark fantasy game now has pronouns, surgery scars, the skin condition with black and white skin, and trans. In a fucking dark fantasy game, where all the rules were already established, they forced that in.

Dustborn. Thats it, just Dustborn.

They worm their way inside the gaming industry to ruin it for others and make it more for themselves. So much money is being lost.

I did feel like reviews back in the day were paid in some way but now im feeling it more. Dragons dogma 2 ran so terribly but early reviews ignored that were told NOT to talk about microtransactions. The performance? Glossed over.

Games made by non western devs are fetting bombarded with hate by journalists and other media because its not diverse enough and they control the narrative. Wukong because an ign idiot mistranslated from one of the developers and made it sexist when it wasnt. She then slread that lie all over the internet. Wukong got bad press and she stuck to what she said, all other journalists spread the hate of the game. Game was great and everyone knew that. Ign did a poll for users to vote for their goty and wukong was number 1. But then someone noticed that the review scores were getting less and less by the hour. Ign were deleting votes for wukong. Then there was an influx of votes for ff7 rebirth. Soon wukong was so far down. They control the narrative

Stellar blade my god. Hot women made by a korean developer i think. Great action game with great music. But oh no attractive women, time for journalists to make hit pieces on the game. Then there were censorship issues just before the game came out.

Then trump became president. Soon after lots of pronouns started getting dropped from bios and shit. Dei woke shit is just used to curry favour and check boxes. Get you in then you can do what you want.

Some awards event gamestick or something, voted for wukong for goty surprisingly, stellar blade as well. For some reason elden ring dlc is being counted which is not right. Also ff7 rebirth is getting a lot of rewards dor being a mid game overloaded with bad performance ans minigames everywhere. Its also part 2 of 3 so it gettimg awarded for story when its incomplete is baffling

reviewers switched up on stellar blade after it got awarded they now love the game that they've been shitting on for years. You cant trust anyone.

Also lets not forget the game awards in december is the most expensive event. Costing thousands and thousands of dollars just for a trailer of your game. Geoff keyleigh that rat, is trying to get gamers to support him in his attempt to trademark game awards…really? Ffs trade mark game awards so that NO ONE ELSE can use that for doing their own awards show. Fuck you geoff you kojima cock sucker

Also the game award votes are 90% controlled by a panel of judges while 10% are from user reviews. Goodluck getting any fair judgements because guess what? That panel includes ign and a bunch of fake journalists and podcasts that have nothing to do with video games.

I bet you ff7 rebirth is going to be goty. Either that or elden ring dlc

I forgot to add assassins creed shadows to this holy shit. They marketed the game, that was set in japan btw, that everyone finally wanted, and the main character focus was a black samurai. The hate it got was well deserved. After all the talk about dei woke esg etc, they put in a black (supposed) historic playable character for the first time, when all anyone wanted was to play a Japanese assassin set in Japan. For years fans asked for this. Oh dw they added a second playable character, a female japanese ninja. How come she wasn't the main character? And black samurai second? Diversity points.

Now the big debate. This black character yasuke was never a samurai. People looked hard into it and there was not enough evidence to prove that he was anything but a retainer for nobunaga. Apparently ubisoft did research and referenced a book by some thomas lockley or something. Turns out that dude was a fraud. He made uo information and then made a dummy account to reference his own book on Wikipedia so he could a job or something in Japan. People called him out on it and he denied it all then privated his twitter account and disappeared forever.

Meanwhile Wikipedia decided to alter the facts that people were editing to fit their narrative and then locked it so no one else could change it back to the truth. Wikipedia is corrupt look at DnD and Warhammer.

Anyway ubisoft put out a statement something along the lines of "its our take on history" when for the longest time, how they started this series was about being as historically accurate as possible. Also note that they've been gettimg all the Japanese history and items factually wrong and just doing an overall disgrace to japanese culture. The tori gate comes to mind. That they delayed the game and adjusted the editions to be free or some shit.

Also also. Steam reviews. I saw a thing in skullgirls. It was marketed for its sex appeal, no lies thats what it was first then a fighting game. Now it sold well and was crowdfunded and lots of positivity. Then there was internal drama and they kicked out an autistic dude who wasnt good in dealing with people. Not entirely his fault. But these women, always the women, in office wanted him gone and random 'fans' made up false accusations to get him fired. Wow what a surprise they did the same thing to Vic the voice of Broly. Im seeing a theme here of women coming in to mens spaces and ruining it for them because they dont like men being happy or having something thats predominantly for men and thats okay, nope. Anyways got off topic. After the head dude got fired or left the company, the game itself started getting changed. They uodated the game and changed character models that no one but a minority had a problem with. Character designs and fucking concept art. After that the game got review bombed hard and rightfully so. Steam eventually changed their review system because sometimes people can abuse that system. So now by default, you dont see the negative reviews from the time THE DEVELOPER decided the negative reviews were unfair, also its reflected only positively on the store page with a little asterisk next to it. The asterisk means the reviews were adjusted and you would have to turn on a setting so you can see the negative reviews for the game that caused the change.

Your Analysis is flawed, you are analysing arbitrary aggravations of a meaningless & subjective numbers, with completely different obscured scoring systems & calling that "BIAS".
Scores have no meaning, the actual review content is all that matters, for example I decided to buy Dragon Age: Veilguard after watching Skill Up's video NOT recommending it.
Skill Up explained why HE didn't enjoy the game & that gave me the information I needed to know I disagreed with his opinion & I'm enjoying the game with 100+ hours, about 3/4 played.
I ignore scores & watch/read reviews to form my own opinion of a game, I've had great fun in games I know are "Bad", & hated "Good" games, because I was NOT having fun playing them.

@yourlocalfestivefurry354 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

Bro this is from FOUR YEARS AGO??? Man, you should see what the landscape looks like now… Access journalism baby!

@Peteboi64932 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

They should add a localization filter to steam (not IGN, they are exlusively 20 year old western male people who think they rule the gaming world even when they can't comprehend a kids "puzzle") so that you aren't caried away by reviews from different comunities (for example: a platformer game getting bad reviews from mortal combat players, lowering the average score)

@diabolicallink December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

I’m gonna be honest I don’t understand why people pay attention to critic scores at all. You said it yourself, the whole point of critics is because they supposedly know better than us idiots down below. Listening to them is basically me saying “yeah I don’t know what i do and don’t like.”

@TheRadioSquare December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

Should've used Steam reviews

@HowDoYouTurnThisOn_ December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

game reviewers trying to rush through persona 5 to review it

@jamesamongus3338 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

8:50 como um brasileiro eu posso confirmar que eu nunca joguei "league of legends"

@benjiusofficial December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

2:56 This is wrong. Objectively wrong.

A sample of binary choices, resulting in a binomial distribution, approximates a Gaussian (normal) distribution at around 300 data points (with some caveats). That's called the Law of Large Numbers. If you were to divide the interval [0..1], you could intrepret the resulting mean of the analogous std dist in a typical quintile or percentile bracketing.

(Add all the regular addenda for bias here)

@Sundance967 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

I feel that game reviewers should do something similar to old food critics, as in they play multiple times, trying different ways to play the game, and without deadlines

@ultra9349 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

I like how you played his world at the end because i love that game because it had good idea and it’s rush makes it so fun to see the jankyness of the game

@selwrynn6702 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

It has been proven recently with Alanna Pierce saying that IGN basically just review triple A games from 6-10 & Indie games 1-5 in an incredibly condescending video.

@jacquesparpaing3217 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

About the tighter gap between 1996-2001 metascore/userscore : wouldn’t be caused by the fact people wasn’t on the internet as nowadays ? Thus they couldn’t write they own review and weighted less than the sum of all publications reviews ?

@jacquesparpaing3217 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

As a 3D plateformer enjoyer, I can tell you A hat in time, the self-proclaimed “spiritual successor of Mario Sunshine and Banjo-Kazooie”, is a total piece of shit. I dropped it almost instantly after buying it on its release.
World design here is just… abysmal. Game designers here didn’t understand what made 3D plateformers of the strong era so good. They just didn’t get it.
They didn’t got it so much their game is boring at best but most of the time unplayable. Some weeks after I did DK64, a game made by actual capable designers. Gap was unfathomable between the two.

@tiltedbandy6038 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

Game reviewers are ass at videogames, that's the rpoblem

@casualsatanist5808 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

Im actually completely fine with a "cheat button" or "invis mode" as long as its called something like "Coward mode" that affects the journos pride so that theyll out themselves to complain about it.

@Wh3than December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

I saw this after ign gave sparking zero a 7

@PuthySlayer69420 December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

ur existence is a bias

@Jake-mf6mc December 3, 2024 - 10:16 pm

Every single thing in this video could be avoided if you just listen to what the public think about the game and whether they think it’s good or not
