You should take a few days off from ranting and railing against gambling, it's not good for your mental health. Non of the hobby gamblers are watching your content anyway, if they watch anything at all it will be pro-break 'positivity' to affirm their confirmation bias.

I got into collecting when I was a little girl starting off when my grandfather bought be a pack of 1997 Fleer Ultra Football cards. I switched to Pokémon at its heyday and then stopped. Started back in 2008 collecting baseball and sending out for TTM autographs then stopped again. Started collecting again loosely on 2017 and it got more serious in 2021. I’m older and make older people money but admit that I got (responsibility) carried away with buying boxes where I’m disappointed when I don’t get a big hit.

Recently I’ve told myself I’ll buy boxes of specific sets and only until I’m somewhat near a complete set. The rest of my purchases will be singles.
But watching your videos consistently has slowly helped to recalibrate myself into why I love the hobby and focus on what I want rather than the hype around the next shiny thing.

But if I’m totally honest, cards used to be a purely fun hobby for me but now, while still fun, are a way to give me sense of control in my collecting and organizing. Takes me away for my day job and helps to center myself after a long day. It’s getting a bit overwhelming though!

Im 52. I started collecting at the age of 3. I would get a pack of cards everyday since kindergarden to about 5th grade after school. My first job was 90. I would buy 5 boxes a week. Then the market became oversatured. How did the manufacturer fix ir? Everything became patches, game used and autos. The product is getting boring. It's the same stuff over and over, change the product name. Now I'm only buying pre 90. You can't blame the collectors. MLB tried to get the card market under control to limit product. Point the finger at the problem. The problem is the card companies. I get they need to show a profit. Profit over many products now. Packs use to cost 1:50 for 1989 upper deck baseball. Now a pack of cards is 3.50 and up. The problem is the shows. Look at these young collectors ( kids) today. They are walking around with thousands of dollars worth of cards. Kids doing several hundred dollar trades and selling cards. The internet helped the hobby. Now the hobby turned its back on the collector. It's all about the money. I REFUSE TO BUY MODERN CARDS. I only collect baseball now. I am the odd ball collector. I build master sets. Each of sets are in top loader and penny sleeves. Most collectors have no idea what a master set even is. This is sad.

I think it’s crazy people dropping hundreds or thousands for Skenes and Elly player breaks hoping to hit an auto. 99 times out of hundred they are flushing $$$ down the drain.

Great topic! The hardest thing though is how can somebody lend their personal hobby experience to another person? The joy of getting packs for me from 1971- 1978 couldn't be replicated. NEO explained how TCG cards though do not have this problem. There has to be some synthesis of these ideas for sports cards.

As someone who’s now 31 and collected since he was a kid, got into it because my dad collected since he was a kid in the 50s, I’m torn but skew optimistic. You have to find the silver lining. Do I think breaks and trophy hunting and the way people flip is good? Personally I’m over it. It peaked my interest but was simply a product of covid, influencers, and business. People like Logan Paul popularized selling cards and in a world of get rich quick fads/schemes the card industry is seeing that influence coupled with social media, and media consumption in general with TikTok, IG, YouTube, etc. here’s the thing. That doesn’t mean it’s bad. I don’t participate in that side of things. I collect for my PC. if I want to gamble and do that, there’s a space for it, but I can also completely ignore it. My concern is overproduction of cards for a second junk wax era type for value but also I balance value and personal value. You can choose what you want, how you build the collection, etc. and genuinely the hobby has exploded and gotten so much more notoriety that now I can find just about anything I want. I scour eBay and score awesome cards for great prices. I don’t have to go hunting for Wemby and Skenes,etc. if I buy packs and get em? That’s awesome. I probably flip em because I don’t personally care to collect them and that’s some nice extra cash. If not, I collect what cards I like and which sets. My only only gripe is the over the emphasis on refractors and parallels and everything being chromed out but there’s still regular style cards too. Thats my “old man” stance, I like the simpler designs from back in the day. Other than that, there shouldn’t be this doom and gloom scenario. Cards will still exist. Do I wish there was more parity than just Panini? Of course. I miss upper deck a lot but there’s still great stuff out there. I think if you take the silver lining of the exposure and addition of collectors for whatever their purpose, is only positive. The greed comes from the card manufacturers who know people are spending boat loads to get these cards so they overproduce content.

I think a lot of people are in credit card debt because of sports cards , but certainly won’t admit it. I’m a long time collector and even had to fix my spending a little. It’s a shame.

I am 55 years old and have been COLLECTING since I am 4 when my father brought home my first pack of baseball cards. I have amassed a large vintage collection in all four major sports that I still love to just LOOK at. Do I hope it has value? Of course…it is in my will to go to my kids to sell someday. But I dont collect for that reason. I collect because I love getting an old card that I dont have to add to the ones I do!!!
