Auto tune uses even temperament rather than just intonation which means that on some notes it’s actually out of tune by nearly 1/5 of a semitone. To me it just sounds awful. Anyone who has a keen ear clearly can’t think that it’s necessary or sounds good. I’m certain if Whitney Houston had been put through auto tune she would have sounded worse.

The host of this video started with a compelling reason for why a pure voice brings tone and emotion. Then ruins it by saying these overpaid popstars have to work for 1 to 2 hours. Gosh, it must be so tough for them. I can understand why some musicians use auto-tune or Melodyn to create effects, but we are honing bad singers like Taylor Swift. The excuse used here is Competition. But this is a race to the bottom that no one wins. Why go to a concert when the singer is miming to their records?

Alright, we all know he means pitch correction. He specifically even mentions Melodyne by name. I can forgive him calling it autotune when most professional musicians and mixing engineers I know personally will usually refer to pitch correction as auto tune.

I am a singer and have been in many choirs and groups over the years. I’ve met many professionals that show how they use pitch correction. It seems like cheating, but in this market you have to have perfect vocals. While Autotune makes a more robotic sound, Melodyne does the a similar thing but allows for you to modify it to sound more natural.

Too many people don’t realize that many musicians are not THAT good. Now that there is even LIVE autotune, someone who is an average singer can become a mainstream pop star. Nothing annoys me more than people praising vocals that are on a track and autotuned with melodyne. Most people don’t realize the vocals they are praising are actually fake because melodyne can be convincing if the person is at least ok at singing. However, they are not necessarily good simply because the track sounds good. It’s concerning.

It’s annoying .. and the audience is always going to expect this perfection and think a good singer cannot sing! Because they are use to the perfection. We need to get back to raw natural talent. There’s nothing healing , soothing in the fake stuff.. I get that the effects are fun , but I’m gonna hit the notes on my own with no help that’s how it should be! I’d rather be real .. and I prefer to hear real

The problem is the lack of disclosure. What I care about it people misleading young people who think they just aren't good enough at singing when in fact their big idol is just cheating to appear perfect. No human ever will be able to hit notes every time dead on. The little imperfections is what makes your style. It's what makes your voice your voice. But young singers grown up similar to teenagers admiring bodybuilder who pretend all they do is train and sleep well. We know that isn't true. Just like bodybuilders a lot of these singers disguise their use of autotune and just won't admit to it creating false expectations in the younger generation. It also creates a pressure to use autotune when you don't even need it. I personally think it's pure cancer. There are occasionally instances where it is just a tool like with Daft Punk. But more often than not it just makes the voices more robotic and completely destroys the natural singing style of someone's voice.

It's funny because singers are conditioning young adults to get used to perfect pitch and on the other hand they are scared of AI creating songs.
Perfect is what AI does, AI can create perfectly tuned songs but the human touches they can't. So in a way, singers are grooming people to replace them.

Make no mistake, Autotune is FAR from the only way singers “cheat” (in fact, it’s really a combination of Autotune, melodyne (manual tuning), multitracking, reverb, digital compression, and splicing numerous takes together). This, combined with quantization (setting instruments and vocals to be exactly on grid) makes songs sound uncannily “perfect,” often in ways that drain the life from vocals and instrumentals alike…I guess the one upside is that fewer songs are ruined by horrifically bad singing than before (I remember listening to Ringo Starr’s attempt at disco (when I was watching Todd in the Shadows’ Trainwreckords video) and being shocked at how bad the singing actually sounded), however music these days sounds really weird (and would probably have an uncanny valley effect) if you’re used to the pre-autotune, pre-digital era…

We are losing our human talents and skills. The Odyssey was orated by memory ....the entire thing. That was normal back then. We don't need to do that since the printing press, so people lost their ability to memorize,
My great grandpa used to write letters every day. Everyone did back then. Their literacy skills were far superior to ours. Then we got phones and stopped writing letters and our literacy dropped.
Now with autotune....people will lose the ability to sing and make music.
Imagine how sad that would be ...
