Solitaire Marble, also referred to as Peg Solitaire or Brainvita, is a single-player board game with a history dating back to the late 17th century. Traditionally, it is played with marbles or pegs on a board with holes. The most common board setup is a cross-shaped grid with 33 holes, though other variations exist.
The exact origins of the game are unclear, but it is believed to have been invented in France around 1687. One popular story attributes its creation to a French aristocrat who designed the game while imprisoned in the Bastille. The earliest known reference to the game appears in the works of French mathematician and game enthusiast Claude-Gaspard Bachet de Méziriac, in his book “Recreations Mathematiques.”
At the beginning of Solitaire Marble, each hole on the board is filled with a marble except for the central hole, which remains empty. The goal is to remove all the marbles from the board except one, ideally ending with the last marble in the central hole. Players remove a marble by jumping an adjacent marble over it into an empty hole directly on the other side, similar to moves in checkers. The jumped marble is then removed from the board. Moves can be made horizontally or vertically, but not diagonally.
