When you look at teams in professional sports there are always some telltale signs when a team is “special” or “different”:
1) They win games on the road they should have lost.
2) Everyone’s success truly seems to matter to everyone, whether they are playing, on the bench, or injured.
3) They beat teams that they supposed to beat.
4) They don’t use winning to excuse poor execution on the details.
5) They can win when the bounces don’t go their way.
6) Even when winning, it feels like they haven’t shown their best game.
Aside from these signs, the most fascinating thing about this team is that despite being 5-1, with three road victories, and a couple of blowouts, we have not see their best four quarters of play.
A week from today we will have played 10 games with three HUGE road games against arguably the best teams in the league: Boston, Cleveland, and OKC. I honestly think that they hold Curry, Wigs, and Melton out tomorrow against Washington so we can be full strength against Boston. That is the “circled in red ink” game for both teams and winning that game matters because if we can beat Boston on the road, we will believe that we can beat anyone.
The schedule the Warriors have this year just feels brutal, and the team’s ability to win on the road this year will be the key factor in securing a top 6 seed. We play 7 of the next 10 games on the road: Washington, Boston, Cleveland, OKC, Clippers, Pelicans, and Spurs. If we win 5+ of these games, the Warriors will have to be considered a top 4 team in the West, if not outright contenders. Time will tell.
