Review: Iconoclasts (PlayStation 4, PS Vita & Steam) – Defunct Games

by admin

Defunct Games reviews Iconoclasts by Joakim Sandberg, available now on PlayStation 4, PS Vita, PC, Mac and Linux.

Iconoclasts works as not only an exciting run ‘n gun-style action game, but also a great story filled with likable characters. Joakim Sandberg has spent the better part of a decade crafting a fully-realized world with a strong emphasis on puzzle solving. There are times when the game veers too far into Metroidvania cliches and the combat isn’t as tight as it should be, but Iconoclasts is one of the most unpredictable action games you’re going to play this year.

Ori. It's so beautiful, cute, sad, challenging and creative. It was awesome.

Very late but I can't pick one Metroidvania protagonist as my favorite. Robin is definitely high in the rankings though. I have a huge soft spot for engineer, mechanic, hacker, scientist, inventor, and other forms of techie and designer type characters

More indie game reviews!

@duhmez October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

You can update your title of this video, it is on Switch now! and I LOVE IT!!

@Fuzunga October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Pretty sure this game has a 32-bit look, not 16. It looks like a GBA game.

@apex6186 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

meh, its a pass from me. looks like another sjw game

@AlexBSPLUS October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

In design i love Dandara, from… Dandara. But in genral, yeah, my favorite its Samus.

@JulietStMoon October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Robin. I know that's a cliche and unsurprising answer under this video, but I absolutely adore her design and the way the game so perfectly builds her character in a way that resonates with the player, even though she has very little spelled out traits.

I bought this recently because of seeing your review, glad I did.

@jamergamer0076 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Here's an original answer…Samus Aran. Can't go wrong with a classic original.
Ps. I just bought this game this past week. Partly because it was on sale, but also because of your review. I usually don't care at all about videogame industry reviews since they often seem like shills or dummies, but I feel like I found a reliable source of info on this channel. Now I tend to see what this channel says about a game b4 plunking down virtual real money. (u know, since it's thru psn or Xbox live)
You are wielding a frightful amount of power, and you know what Spidey's uncle had to say about power right? 🙂

Still Alucard. I got the import SOTN when it first hit and remember being in awe of his animations and how fluid he felt. No other character has had as smooth a feel ever since. Not to mention we're both the rebellious type.

1st problem I have with the game is that its internal res does not match sprite res, which results in one of the worst sins in Pixel Art – sprites not aligning to the pixel grid established by environment, resulting in "half-pixels". Example: https://i.imgur.com/B4uwq6P.png

There are also a few problems with the game story – for the most part I found that none of the characters were likeable except for Robin (who does not speak) and Royal who honestly tries to do better, yet makes everything worse. Every other character is a jerk in one way or the other.

@StardustSpeedman October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Favorite MetroidVania character: Robin!

@Indie-A-tom October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

My top 5 fav metroidvania chars are Ghost (Ghost 1.0 and Mini Ghost), Daniel (Unepic), Shantea, Juan (Guacamelle) and Soma Cruz (Castlevania).

@dukejaywalker5858 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

My favorite Metroidvania game is "Environmental Station Alpha"… but my favorite character is still and probably always will be the one and only Samus Aran.

@dukejaywalker5858 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Are you planning to do a review of "Celeste"? I'm keen to hear your opinion!

@savariaannie October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Shantae is my favorite character but cave story is the best metroidvania game.

@allenc3206 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

I would love a physical copy of this. It would sit nicely between axiom verge and shovel knight.

@ngchloe4877 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

will you play Celeste next

@RafaelWingnux October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

I'd go for Alucard but Soma Cruz and Shanoa have more realized personalities.

@judgemario October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Axiom Verge wasn't as good as it should have been. The bosses were especially lame.

@devbyrd1 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Samus duh

@MechagirlSachiko October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Definitely Lemeza Kosugi, from La Mulana. And thanks for the video!

@wilrivera2668 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

.. seems interesting. graphically i would be on the fence about it; but, it sounds like the story and design make it worth a try …

@filialuvssquigly7447 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

I would say alucard and samus. But that feels like cheating since thier started the metroidvania thing. So I'm going to say shantae for the shantae series and dust for dust an elsyian tail.

@ezkimo6music982 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Ahhh Puzzles.

@Faapu October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Now I'm even more excited to play this one! Also that's not how you pronounce Joakim, the J is not silent (source: I'm Swedish).
As for my favorite Metroidvania action hero, I'm gonna answer with Soma Cruz from Castlevania Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow.

@PenguinDT October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

This looks mighty interesting. Thank you for highlighting this one, it was completely below my radar.

As for Metroidvania heroes – I guess I would go with something potentially controversial: Batman. Because Arkham Asylum is a text-book Metroidvania, only in 3D, and still my favourite from the series. I mean, you just can't beat the Bats.

@melvinblackburn195 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

The year is young, but this will likely stay on my list of favorite games for 2018. Typically, Metroidvanias are rarely among my favorite games. This is a little meatier and interesting than the sea of games out there within the genre. I love this game, and those visuals, you simply cannot fault. They are the greatest strength of Iconoclasts.

@OldyAlbert October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

I played 35% of it and found it to be extremely boring (even on hard). Level design is very bland, puzzles are for 3y olds, combat is basic, exploration is not rewarding since there's just tons of materials that nowhere to use. I really wanted to like this game but ended up hating it, i felt like playing safe AAA game – boring level design, easy difficulty – but alot of liniarity and cutscenes – not something i expected from indie platformer 7 years in the making. I just hope La-Mulana 2 will come out this year to wash iconoclasts taste from my mouth.

@ProfessorElz October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Bought Celeste instead of this, but I'll probably pick it up soon. Guess my fav Metoidvania character is probably Alucard.

@akba666 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

The game looks great. I didn't even know it existed. Steam is so clogged with trash I don't even bother looking through recommended and new releases anymore.

@zinoelgato October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm

Juan from Guacamelee. And thanks for this review, I'm getting this one for sure.

@donjuan1384 October 31, 2024 - 9:47 pm
