Why Do Memes Matter? – Glad You Asked S1

Memes are the language of the internet. At some point in the last decade, they became the secret ingredient for advertising, political messaging, and disinformation all across the world. Glad You Asked host Christophe Haubursin wanted to know why that happened — and what it means for the internet today.

For this video, we spoke to Ryan Milner and Whitney Phillips, the co-authors of this book on the messy, antagonistic folklore constantly being created through memes.

The term “internet ugly” comes from this paper by Nick Douglas. It’s a great read on how 4chan’s design influenced the visual aesthetic of memes.

Improbability principle: “It's an unusual day if nothing unusual happens”
"The only day where something unusual happens is when nothing unusual happens" 5:53 / 19:00

Meme. the DNA of the soul.

they shape ours will.
They are the culture they are everything we pass on.

expose someone to anger long enough,
They will learn to hate.

they become a carrier envy, greed, despair…

All meme are passed along.

Yeah, very much heavily invested in mirror-dyadic constructions.
@gonzogil123 October 26, 2024 - 3:15 am
That was an interesting mirror-stage moment as he asked all those people to stare at him and jubilantly deliver onto him the ops by capital as media.
@gonzogil123 October 26, 2024 - 3:15 am
Ok, here we have two spectacular inversions (how the viewer must fail in registering what holds aka extent of efficacy of concrete alienation) mystiifying heavy-rotation as well as Monopoly as Capital as Media. First, it must be seen as a non-cultural trans-historical constant outside human control, and second it must be registered as something that is not organized around monopoly capitalist lines, but rather inverts what is the case and present it as produced in a socialist way.
@gonzogil123 October 26, 2024 - 3:15 am
A very dementedly wawaweewa presentation.
@gonzogil123 October 26, 2024 - 3:15 am
Every example provided up until 4:32min is an output of capital as media. Looks like the naturalization of contingent processes in the second wave of social darwinism. As to why monopoly as capital as media needs to return to this cyclically? Probably a good place to start would be "Society of The Spectacle" Debord translated by Ken Kabb: theorem 101. A study in spectacular representations. Debord does not elaborate on the negation/limit implicit in the analysis. The latters crucial to have a sense of the return of social darwinims. Very much embraced by Capital as Media.

There is nothing more American than hiring some 'expert' to tell you that "Memes are actually secretly racist".
@Hstat910 October 26, 2024 - 3:15 am
What I find amazing is that the term meme was coined by Richard Dawkins of all people…

@fireb62 October 26, 2024 - 3:15 am
4:45 hey @vox the captions in Brazilian Portuguese are wrong: instead of traslating "stock image memes", for some reason it says "memes preconceituosos" (memes with prejudice)
@trr3920 October 26, 2024 - 3:15 am
Literal governments and countries are waging meme wars
@bepractical9383 October 26, 2024 - 3:15 am
I just wish memes do not become a subject that needs to be taught as course in schools or univs.

Free will is a myth, religion is a joke
We are all pawns, controlled by something greater
