Kobayashi Maru [Atari Jaguar] — a Nice and Games “review”

Hey! First, if you are interested in picking up Kobayashi Maru for the Atari Jaguar CD, here’s the place:

http://www.rgcd.co.uk/p/shop.html

Tons of other awesome homebrews there as well, especially if you are into the Commodore 64.

And if you are interested in seeing what the developer, Reboot, is up to, check them out here:

Now on to the game!

This is Kobayashi Maru, for the Atari Jaguar. I suppose technically it is Kobayashi Maru: Final, but the cover art and DVD case spine omit the “Final” part. This game has been available for a while as a download, but this is the final version, available on CD. An actual replicated CD, not a CD-R. Awesome!

Kobayashi Maru is heavily inspired by Time Pilot. A couple things missing from that Konami arcade classic are ships that attack in formation, and ships that can fire homing missiles at you. These for some reason are not big omissions. To me, anyway. Well…actually, the little formation attacks were cool, I wouldn’t mind having them, but I never really was worried about the lack of homing missiles.

This game is basically shoot shoot shoot until you are out of lives. The graphics are mainly small cute sprites, except the motherships that are larger. They really feel like a boss ship, and are really great looking.

I dunno what to say. I always just go on and on in these descriptions. There’s also a part like this, where I talk about how much I am typing. Oh, I am so predictable.

Anyway, you can watch the video and check the game out. It’s fun. I am enjoying it quite a bit. I hope to enjoy it in the future. I love new games for the Jaguar. Assuming they are good. And I think this one is.

Excellent explanation of the Star Trek lore (I don't know the real version, so this is it for me!) and review. Haven't seen you review the updated re-release.

Um. Time Pilot?
@JohnnnyJohn October 25, 2024 - 5:43 am
That was the best recitation of Star Trek lore I have ever heard. God bless you NAG!

I was just playing this now via Skunkboard.  I hope that there's an official cartridge release someday.

I should just automatically know one of your videos is worth giving the thumbs up...

Captain Kirk doesn't like to lose. But he does like to eat. So that worked out well for him. Looks like a decent game, although I'm not sure why they chose the Jaguar as the platform, since it seems like it would be possible on a lot of other more abundant consoles, especially given the problems I've heard about with the Jaguar CD add on thingy. In any case, thanks for the enjoyable review :)

Makes sense, must've taken a while eating a whole region of Italy.

There hasnt been a single homebrew game that has used both SFX and a full CD soundtrack. The ability to fully use the DSP on the Jaguar has been lost since the last official commercial CD release. When we made BlackOut! for the Jaguar, we wanted to do this. But we had to choose either using sfx or choose music... So we went with a straight 2mb upload with mod music in order to keep sfx...

Phew, I was worried we were getting a "vanilla" disc. I feel sorry for vanilla, such a sad descriptor attached to it. "Water" deserves that descriptor. Vanilla has done nothing wrong to be labelled so poorly. I do like reboots though in gaming, although when it comes to films, it's a no-no. *Sighs Reboot Robocop, will they ever learn? Disclaimer: You don't have to answer that last question, it was rhetorical

Sorry for the lack of bunf/bumf - a bunfy booklet is in th eworks and will be sneakily shipped out with further Reboot purchases from RGCD :-)
@shpearg October 25, 2024 - 5:43 am
Yeah, the CD is just a medium to deliver the game to the Jaguar. When U-235 SE supports CD audio we'll have it in our CD games.
@BURP39R October 25, 2024 - 5:43 am
Was there no "bunf" with this game? Why no bunf? Who took the bunf!? I bemoan the death of bunf. A nice book to read with instructions and how I should never feed the game after midnight or leave it in bright light. Never put the game in water or sell it to a fat, useless, inventor. *Sighs. Oh bunf.

Thanks again for saying nice things about another of our games :) So we have a warp screen that should be in every game and in sfdx an unlock screen that is the most awesome you could think of... feeling the pressure for the next release now :) cheers!
@GameplayandTalk October 25, 2024 - 5:43 am
I have no tried this one yet (no CD-ROM attachment, and I haven't felt like dealing with emulators in a while), but it looks like it's some great, simplistic fun. And I agree--the warp screen should be in *every* game, haha!
@Torch70 October 25, 2024 - 5:43 am
This might have been impressive on the Atari 5200...but only if the 5200 didn't already have Zone Ranger from nearly 30 years ago which blows this out of the water. I'd like to see just one game that shows what the Jag is capable of. Something that really pushes it to its limits.
@theawesomegamr October 25, 2024 - 5:43 am
There is a home brew for time pilot on the vectrex :) every system deserves a homebrew of time pilot, or at least a game similar to it :)
@atarileaf October 25, 2024 - 5:43 am
Well now you have something new to eat. Carry on.
@Greg2600 October 25, 2024 - 5:43 am
I think the Kobayashi Maru simulation in Interplay's Star Fleet Academy was more fun than this uninspired flub.
@niceandgames October 25, 2024 - 5:43 am
Time Pilot had not in game music either, so perhaps that was the idea. I don't think the game accesses the CD after the game is loaded, actually.
@niceandgames October 25, 2024 - 5:43 am
That thought had not occurred to me, I was too busy eating bologna.
@atarileaf October 25, 2024 - 5:43 am
How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with jag games wouldn't you say lieutenant?
