Review: Overlanders (Steam) – Defunct Games

by admin

Defunct Games reviews Overlanders by Run-Down Games, available now on PC.

Overlanders races onto the scene with a monster-sized gimmick that is hard to resist. It’s a futuristic racing game where the goal is to hunt down a giant monster and come in first. That’s a cool concept, but this debut release from Run-Down Games doesn’t feel fully fleshed out. The upgrades are tied to the multiplayer mode, the single-player campaign is barebones, the UI is a mess and I’m still confused about the scoring system and some of the weapons. Overlanders has great gameplay and graphics, but it’s clear that it needed a little more time in the oven.

I picked it on sale for 1E on the Switch, not bad so far but I need to get used to it, for the the price on sale it's worth, but for a full price I'm not so sure

@SimonO1919 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Extreme-G.
It was the first and the most perfect, especially with that soundtrack.

@duhmez October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

It is ONE DOLLAR right now, Dec 23 2020.

@alexfink9053 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

It’s on sale now for 99 cents I’m picking it up for that lol

@JadedJester739 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

I just bought this on sale for a dollar on the Switch. Either way I'm sure it's worth a buck but I sure do hope they fixed those issues. Can't wait to play it. Looks cool.

@jessragan6714 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

It's been a year. Has it improved at all? It's super cheap on Switch but I still can't make myself pull the trigger.

@spooky_electric October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Here because it's currently on sale on Switch for $3.74. Shame the scoring system is wonky because in concept, it sounds cool. A bit like Star Wars Episode 1 Racer meets Diddy Kong Racing's boss battles.

Oh well. Thanks for saving me a few bucks.

@ChaoticJosh69 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

About to try it for 90% off on the switch. Thx for the review!

@Hilipinapixili October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

F-Zero GX is my favorite racing game, as well as probably in my Top5 favorite games ever. Been trying tofind something, anything, to fill the void, but nothing works. Don't get me wrong, there's a ton of racing games that I enjoy (Motorstorm, Fast RMX, Mario Kart)… But none of them comes close to F-Zero GX for me. 🙁

@ahrress9346 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

$2.50 right now, guess I'll pick it up

@Bangcat October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

MOTOR STORM series is best. And that's coming from someone who was top five in the world on xbox live for Burnout 3.

@MobileDecay October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Got this for a buck on Switch. 😁

@MartellThaCool October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

It's on sale for $2.50 on the Nintendo Switch

@kimtabel5971 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

I got it on sale 90% off lol. Glad I didnt pay more for it. The concept is great! But as stated, its definitely unfinished… Its ok, but had the potential to be a real good racing game. What a shame, a lot of games seem to be this way nowadays

@Lord_Mangoat October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Saw this in the Nintendo eShop. It's 60% off, but with all the problems you list, I'll wait for it to be fixed/updated, before I buy.

As for my favorite racing game, that's simple. F-Zero GX/AX. Technically 2 games. GX being on GameCube and AX being the arcade machine version. Each with unique characters, cars, parts, and tracks, but if you manage to locate an AX machine, you can use your GameCube memory card with it to unlock all the AX stuff for your save to use on GameCube.

This seems like exactly the kind of racing game asthetic I've always wanted! Future grunge! Too bad the whole thing is so minimal. I was kinda hoping for an open world setting with waypoint races.

QOTD: Fuel. Grungy, open world, heavy emphasis on exploration and offroading. It was a hell of a lot of empty space, there's basically no music, and the physics were a bit… Off. Even still, the driving felt good, the vehicles all looked and felt distinct, and the giant map had decent variation in environments. Dispite being a bunch of empty space, I still wanted to keep on driving.

Thanx for this review, I feel like %95 of switch games are just rushed out, too much port overs, I bought a game on my phone from the App Store only to find they ported the same game over for double the price that’s insane!!! hopefully in the future they’ll stop pushing out these unpolished games and actually spend some time creating a good game where I’m forced to carry around my switch.

@hughlingard October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

and why are we hunting down and slaughtering these noble beasts though?
i've already alerted PETA, so please be prepared for the consequences to your actions.

@jonathanfoote5720 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Got to be F Zero GX hands down best racing game for me although Waverace 64 and excite truck are my top 3 overall – wipeout series is decent too most notably omega collection being the pinnacle of the series.Also worthy of note is fast RMX for switch – might have to check this game out depending on review scores, hopefully they’ve managed to iron out a few fundamental flaws since the steam release although that might just be wishful thinking! Fingers crossed 🤞

@mrredisa.d.d.8566 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Could you PLEASE review Void Bastards? I'd love to hear your take on it.

QotD: probably FlatOut 2 …which reminds me I need to play more of wreckfest (its spiritual successor). Only thing I wish wreckfest had was showing a little more personality in the drivers, like that terrible Death Track®: Resurrection (God help them at least that's one thing they got right 😂)

@LinkMEP October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Road Rash 2

@cyberpunknut1099 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Shame this is so rough around the edges because it really is original and looks great. I'll be sure and give it a try sometime.

QOTD, really goes by my mood. Maybe F-Zero but I can flip over to wipeout if the mood hits.

@Nattosoup October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Mario Kart 64 is my favorite, though I know a lot of people consider kart racers to be a separate genre.

@barry-allenthe-flash8396 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Luckily, I think at this point I've figured out that you and I pretty much do have the same taste in racers, Cyril 🙂 Definitely gonna wishlist this and keep an eye on it – it not only sounds like another case of a game just getting pushed out too early, but it feels like that situation where the initial Steam release is rocky and then later on it'll land on consoles with the benefit of post-launch refinement. I'm just getting that vibe from this, like with GRIP or Road Redemption and what I believe (fingers crossed) RISE: Race the Future is doing now too.

QOTD: I can narrow my fave racer down to just one, which is Burnout Revenge. But damn that does a disservice to so many other games that are definitely still up there: Burnouts Takedown & Dominator, Dangerous Driving, OutRun 2, Ridge Racer Type 4, Split/Second, Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing, Suzuki AlStare, Diddy Kong Racing, Splashdown 2, Rumble Racing, SHOX, Sega Rally 2, OnRush… the list goes on and on. Also Star Wars Episode 1 Racer is up there too, but it didn't really come to mind until I saw this video. All the monster/aliens, hovercraft and desert planets give off a MAJOR Ep.1 Racer vibe. That just me?

@DrUmz2 October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Mario kart 8 deluxe, I love this one so much
And of course fast RMX
and the motorstorm games are a lot of fun too

@clayton_games October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

Turning monster hunter into a racing game??
Welp, too early to play this game.

@Faapu October 19, 2024 - 8:38 am

I love a lot of racing games, but one that I always find myself coming back to is Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. I have been playing the spiritual successor, Team Sonic Racing, recently, and I find it enjoyable but not quite as good as Transformed was, at least in singleplayer.
