Do you know much about German music? Tune in to this episode of Meet the Germans to see Rachel sample different genres of mainstream music in Germany, from rock to hip-hop, techno to “Schlager.”
Rammstein, Helene Fischer and Capital Bra have probably never been on the same playlist before… but Meet the Germans is bringing them together for a musical one-off.
Rachel moved from the UK to Germany in 2016. As a relative newcomer she casts a fresh eye over German clichés and shares her experiences of settling into German life. Every two weeks she explores a new topic – from unusual bans to meaty cuisine or haunted castles. This week: the ultimate German music playlist.

Did we miss any of your favorites?
I have stopped all ammunitions. They should thank happy people.
Top of the nostagia list? "Marmor, Stein und Eisen bricht" by Drafi Deutscher.
as an indian i had never ever heard of any german song…here in india we are more into english, spanish and punjabi song other than our hindi song
Ich hätte es schön gefunden, wenn auch mal auf die deutschen Klassiker wie Mozart (ja, Salzburg war 1756 deutsch!), Bach und Beethoven hingewesen hätte …
Blümchen of course ❤❤❤❤❤
I think Udo Lindenberg would have been worth a mention, because he is one of the first ones who used german language in Rock music context, and in his case it worked fine since he was a really talented songwriter in his beginnings.
Much respect for mentioning german Rock & Metal, too!! 😊 (most radio stations in Germany seem to pretend as if these genres don't exist.. 😝)
Herbert Grönemeyer helps me so much with his beautiful German language and his hopeful and humorous lyrics. Btw some of the pictures you choose of him are amongst my favorites he was so cute in the 1980's.
Einstürzende Neubauten! And CAN!
Maybe not as many know of them, as for example Rammstein,
but I know people from many countries from all over the world, who just love their music!
Marmorstein und Eisen bricht
aber unsre Liebe nicht!
the birthplace and mecca of ELECTRO INDUSTRIAL MUSIC.
To me, German IS industrial music.
Rammestein is borderline industrial. They certainly have solid pieces of it.
Kraftwerk is moreso industrial, some of the grandfathers of electro-industrial actually.
VNV Nation is my favorite group and they live in Deutschland.
My favourate German musician is classical music by Beethoven and Bach
Stahlgewitter
Heinz Rudolf Kunze – Wunderkinder, Das All ist Deutsch, Dein ist mein ganzes Herz…
German carnival music is the best. Although I’m more of a metal head and typically listen to German stuff like Kreator and Destruction, I have a soft spot for happy/goofy carnival jams. Mainly because I grew up in Germany as a military brat and associate good times to that music.
Amon Duul, Can, Neu, Cluster and other Krautrockers deserve a mention, they showed the world a whole new way that music could be made right during The Beatles' heyday
Thanks to Yamaha Tyros keyboard, Schlager is one of my favorite genres from Europe
I would say the original modern popular music genre created in Germany is Kraut Rock, because all the rest that are mentioned in the video are imported genres. Kraut originated in German in the 70s, and it was dubbed as such by English journalists that couldn't find a better way to name it.
Einsturzende Neubauten, Die Krupps, KMFDM, all industrial music pioneers and predecessors of the more commercial Rammstein.
Top ‘German’ groups/singers…..Boney M….David Hasselhof….Seasick Steve…😂….seriously though; James Last…..
German music with different music genres, look at my playlist.
Many of these genres are derivative, but Germans (along with artists in Detroit) invented techno and many of its offshoots. Techno is one of the greatest culture gifts Germany has given to the world.
"techno" – and psy trance proceeds to start…)))
This video is obviously for foreigners… and no German band was ever as globally popular as TOKIO HOTEL for a few years (and not just with one hit…), yet they aren't mentioned here… why the bias? TOKIO HOTEL even influenced the choice of German in European schools! Faun and Nina Hagen also deserved to be mentioned in their own genre.
Ton, Steine, Scherben!😎 Just because 😛
Mine's Faun!
No one can touch Heino! Lol.
Namika is my all time fav German singer/rapper. I like every single song she’s ever made and I also have a huge crush on her 😆❤️😍
What about Udo Lindenberger, the northern Panic -Rocker and Cologne Rockstars as Wolfgang Niedeckens BAP?!
Nina Hagen ist mit ihrem Hit "New York, New York" die Disco-Queen.
One of my favorite headbangers is by a German band from the 80s Accept's "Balls To The Wall"
Electric Callboy brought me here after finding out what "Schlager" is. Yes, you know exactly what song I'm on about 🤣
So, basically German schlager music is ghei hiv globalist import music…
In all fairness, you'd be hard pressed to find an American who didn't know the tune/lyrics to 99 Red Balloons
Thanks. That was very interesting!
As a foreigner you'd kinda think that Germany´s biggest international band would make the list….
Also the American rapper J Cole was born in Germany.
Cluster, Neu!, Can, Faust, DAF, Michael Rother, Conny Plank, usw, usw…
Knorkator – Deutschlands meiste Band der Welt
"The Schlechst of…" "Hasen Chart Breaker" "High Mud Leader"
"Wir freuen Euch, uns zu sehen"
Unheilig
wo ist Udo Jürgens?
The band i have in mind rocked the '80s bar scene in Canada. It is called Propaganda and it made Industrial pop music that i still listen to nowadays. The album A secret wish was all good but the track called Dream within a dream still me chills 30 years later! Cheers Rachel!
