I like to ease into my reviews. Talk about build quality, what sets them apart, how they’re made… And then move onto listening tests. These speakers make me want to jump right into telling you about the listening tests. No, actually, THESE speakers make me want to build a room onto my house just to listen to them. Obviously, I’m excited about these new speakers from Def Tech. They’re billed as, and really developed to be, studio monitors, hence the name – StudioMonitor 65’s. That means that at least one of the design goals was to create a speaker with enough dynamic range, fidelity, and finesse to be usable by recording studio professionals as a reference speaker for mixing and mastering music.

They look huge. Not really bookshelf 😊
I didn't know Jim Gaffigan did speaker reviews…
Have you guys tested the D11 def tech demand series which was the new bookshelf type form DT? Are they anywhere near good as the SM 65s?
I have these things like 7 years now and they are still so good it's hard to believe. If you can find these speakers you will be very happy. Great review.
What a Salesman. He could sell a Kia to a WWII vet.
I have Def Tech speakers for over 10yrs and still very happy with the clean low bass that goes down to 20HZ and a great all around speakers. I have the power monitor 900 250 watt 10" subwoofer and a Def Tech 250 watt CLR 3000 with a 10" subwoofer and have no problem with bass. Many speaker brands I have owned over the years I was never fully happy because of the bass was not clean. Then I got the Def Tech and been very happy.
Satellites and sub!
I have a pair of S 45's and a PeachTree Nova and they are a great combo. How much better are the the 65's? Is it just in the bass or are they much better in all aspects.
Love to see a face of against Polks Lsim 703 problem with 703 you need power lots of amps!
buy towers ie golden ear no sub needed
Has anyone bi wired these speakers. I have the SM55's for fronts powered by a Pioneer Elite vsx lx102 and wondering if there an improvement in sound quality.
I feel that the upward-firing passive radiator is as much of a minus as it is a plus, at least for recording use. Problem is, there are many times when there will be a need to add effects to a raw recording so as to enhance the recording's ambient sound. But if the speakers themselves are propagating in a manner which enhances the listening room's natural ambience, it can and will interfere with the engineer's ability to differentiate the ambience added to the recording from that which is occurring in the listening environment during playback. This is why all proprietary studio monitors are strictly forward-firing. What say you, Def Tech?
I have 3 of these for main speakers, and center channel. Then I have SM 55 surrounds. Sounds absolutely fantastic. They are extremely accurate speakers, that is the best way to describe them.
Would these work to mount on a wall? I don't have a choice, so maybe the SM55 would work better? or? (Its a larger space/26×13)
I just purchased these to use as surrounds(haven't received them yet) and after watching this review, I'm excited more than ever to get them integrated into my system, which consists of the new BP 9020 powered towers and the CS 8040 center channel speaker. Given the praise for the SM65's, I wonder how they'd fair as mains? Should I take the BP9020's back and get another set of the 65's?
How do these compare to the ELAC Debut B6 or some Home Theater Direct Level 3 Book shelves, since different people call the "best Book shelve speaker (they have heard!)? Granted the ELAC+the HTD are cheaper…
I am using these (DefTech SM 65's) for front left and right in a dedicated home theater room. I am using SM55 for center channel. I am using a Klipsch KSW12 sub along with Klipsch inwalls for rear left and right to complete a 5.1 setup. Question is this; what would be the recommended crossover setting for the KSW 12? Reviewing the specs of all involved I would be inclined to only have the sub pick up the load only under 60hz or so. Would that be a correct assessment?
I'm trying to decide on these vs the more expensive SVS Ultra Bookshelf speakers, any advice?
I bought a pair of these based on this review, and all I can do is agree 100% with Andrew's findings.
Unrelatedly….hot bear.
how would these be as close range studio monitors?
