I’m sorry about the bystander effect. Unfortunately it’s a real thing and the only way to break that spell is to call on specific people in the crowd to help you. That’s the only way to get someone’s attention. Otherwise, it’s really easy for bystanders to stare or walk away unsure of what to do. You may get lucky and find someone who takes action, which we’ve seen in the news, but usually people won’t intervene because they don’t know what’s happening or if it’s safe to assist. But I guarantee you if you approach someone specific or yell out to someone specific, as long as they aren’t a coward or indifferent, they will help. I’m so glad the Sephora employees provided assistance. Kudos to them for stepping up!

Not just NYC, 9 out of 10 people are in their own selfish little worlds where they wouldn't lift a finger for someone unless it benefited them ten fold.  Although, NY/NJ is probably the most corrupt area in the US including all levels of government to their first responders, and you aren't legally allowed to defend yourself in anyway when it comes to the criminals, so good luck and hope for the best if you want to visit the "Big Apple" as they call it
