Microsoft repaird it less than two years later. It was a Salvation Army find. I should perhaps change the thermal paste, but at least the gpu was replaced.
Many games, including late prints of halo 3, had updated os's on them that you were forced to install before playing the game.
I believe black ops 1 had one as well. It was the modern style but instead of a white pop up box, it was a grey box when you pressed the Xbox button on the controller
The PS3 may have outsold by the end and had strong exclusives, but the 360 was THE console to own that entire gen.
We all got on Xbox to play COD 4, and next thing we knew there was an Xbox update.
Everything has looked different since.
