My daughter was around 8 and wanted to play chess online (with my help - she wasn't very good). Online opponents quickly realised that she (and I) were no challenge and hastily quit the game. However, some very kind chap in Mexico did have patience with her and played a complete game with her. She was talking nonsense (nothing rude or offensive) in the chat and he was replying in a confused, but good-humoured way. We were having a great time, and I'll always be grateful for his kindness and being so generous with his time.

5:40 the openning is when it has been explored. Middle game is when it hasn't. End game is when it was explored by computers.

The Turkish word for Knight is "At" which means "horse". So we called them horses😂

My question: Chess - WTF? My brother was a gifted chess player. As a 4th grader he could beat all the teachers. I was the smarter sibling (he'd agree), but I never understood why or how people did well at chess. He lettered in chess! Did you know you could do that? I got a PhD 5 years after my BS, and I think I'm supposed to get chess, but I don't.

This was a good watch. Some of the questions were annoying though. You had a chance to ask an IM anything about chess and you went with “What’s castling???”

Like bruh just do a Google search.

Fun fact: Levy said, that knight "looks like a horse, no idea why is not called horse". I do not know. But in Poland we call it "skoczek", and it means "jumper". Germans have jumper (springer) too. So generally there is an international tradition to not call horses "horse".

0:34 'Checkmate' is a transliteration, not a translation. Also the Persian letters are given in the wrong direction and in isolated forms - should be شاه مات

In response to the greatest of all time questions I would say everyone pre-stockfish belongs in a separate category than everyone now, simply because having the ability to use a computer for opening prep puts people at a higher level the top 20 now would probably beat Bobby Fisher and Paul Morphy in a long positional game without falling for any opening traps or sharp sidelines because that stuff is all known; Who knows what would happen if you brought those people forward to the computer era, would be greats who continued to find new ways to embarrass people or would they be just another NM or IM no one ever heard of.

Chess is a game I loved playing as a kid against my stepdad. I was never remarkable or anything like that but it was something challenging that I enjoyed. As an adult I can't wrap my head around long term plans anymore and videos like this make me miss those days. Great video, great expert as always

What I love is that ever since PogChamps, even grandmasters have started calling knights horses. I watched Hikaru's stream and he's constantly referring to them as horses.

In german checkmate means Schachmatt which is pronounced like the persian version also the game is called Schach
