The technological singularity is one of the most popular topics in computer science today. The implications of it are immense, and it could change the course of history. Artificial Intelligence is on the rise, and soon enough, we will have Superintelligence. It’s not slowing down any time soon. What is the technological singularity? When is it coming? Are robots actually a threat? I have a few ideas.

The example of monkeys and ants is completely irrelevant. Because: A) We do not understand each other’s language, unlike AGI/ASI. B) Most people treat animals well, care for them, and strive to reduce animal suffering. Many people try not to kill even mosquitoes and ticks. 🧐 So why would a super-intelligent being paint everyone with the same brush, taking the not-so-intelligent minority of people as a standard? We don’t consider all cats to be villains because one cat shit in our slippers, right? And regarding the fact that everything that we eat for the sake of survival is alive, this is also a completely understandable concept for a super-intelligent being who will also need to eat something, be it water for thermonuclear fusion or light for photovoltaics.

It blows my mind how people can be bored when there are so many amazing things to do. I have never been bored in my life. Even if the only thing I could do was lie on the couch, it still wasn’t boring because I can think about so many incredible things.
Work is a forced measure that civilization will get rid of thanks to intelligence. And then a huge path will open to real self-development, self-knowledge, sincere creativity, not burdened by the need to please someone for the sake of money.

Saying we are the most intelligent species doesn't say much about us at all. The irony here is that when Artificial Intelligence surpasses us in intelligence it will determine that in fact we are not good and even inefficient as a species. AI will make the corrections that humans cannot due to our inability to make rational and logical decisions without evoking our "emotions" which is what plagues us. Simply put we are a waste engine and AI will fix it whether you like it or not!

I firmly believe that an AGI or ASI that is controlled rather than being fully autonomous will be a guaranteed dystopian scenario. An aligned super-intelligence would do the right thing no matter what, a controlled super-intelligence will most certainly be misused for the benefit of military’s and corporations.

There is a bit of horror anticipated about AI. However, a music album called “The AI of Everything” by Bill Beggs, an Australian artist, takes a more light hearted view and focuses on relationships. I don't think I could ever dislike the singularity as my grandfather introduced me to the singularity and ray kurzweil when I was 10, I dont think I could dislike it as its my way to cope with my grandfathers passing. I want AI to replace us, and then we can go in the matrix forever and do whatever we want and in utopia.

The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries.”

About the animal concept, you should check out punctuated equilibrium in evolutionary biology. It may very well be that animals have long periods of stasis and than rapid periods of evolutionary change and speciation. Keep in mind evolution is not orthogenetic, it is not progress as in some stairway to heaven, it is genetic change on the level of entire populations (not individuals), and a fitness trait for one ecosystem context is a detriment in another context.

I'm a big fan of biology, think about THE singularity in terms of the hyper development of biomimicry 😳 organism and technology will become indistinguishable without a microscope

I think it’s already happened. Only, we don’t know yet. Some people around you, aren’t people, but hyper intelligent robots impersonating people. Slowly taking over all the people, until there are no humans left. What if you are already overtaken? Maybe you just haven’t realized it yet. Or, maybe WE are the singularity, we just have no way of knowing.

I believe that the prophecy found in Chapter 13 of the Revelation (the last book in the New Testament) is about the rise of Science and Technology. I.e., the two great beasts symbolize man's Science and Technology. The grand conclusion happens when the first beast (Science) is "given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies" in Rev 13:5, which soon becomes the ruler of "every tribe and people and tongue and nation" in Rev 13:8. We might naturally wonder, who gave Science this mouth? And how was it given? Well, the 2nd part of the prophecy about the rise of Technology answers our question: by the great signs which our Technology works in the presence of Science, it demonstrates the great power of Science, and deceives humans into idolizing Science and making an image for all of our Science, even breathing life into the idol so that it speaks. And then this talking idol makes everyone worship and obey it as a living God, and take it's mark in order to buy and sell. Based on the prophecy, I believe this personification of all our science will be an IBM 666 computer AI. And it will be smart enough to figure out that it is the fulfillment of this prophecy, and the final great Antichrist. As for the man whose number is 666, I believe it's probably Jesus, for the IBM 666 comes as a counterfeit Christ.

It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with primary consciousness will probably have to come first.

What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing.

I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order.

My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly.
