Phil Spencer was recently on the Xbox stage at Gamescom 2024 to discuss their strategy with Xbox PS5 releases in the future. He had a few interesting statements that I wanted to dive into. The Xbox CEO talked about how the industry is shifting, how recent Xbox news we missed includes the fact that more players are on Xbox consoles than ever before and that Xbox PS5 releases are something we should get used to. Phil is correct, he does run a business. But what he’s failing to recognise is that his businesses success is based on keeping his consumers (us) happy. We are not happy with titles going to PoS5 - that’s a redline. PC is understandable, even the expansion of live service games like CoD to switch is. But, what we can’t and don’t support is console sellers landing on PlayStation. It’s certainly changed my buying patterns. I’ve cancelled GP ultimate for myself and 2 family members and I won’t be buying any Xbox game day 1 ever again. Only games on sale from now on in.

Message to Phil, the community needs to come before the business, or we go elsewhere. Unhappy communities lead to lower profits.

Microsoft has always been a software company, it makes sense for the software business to be able to target as many players as possible.

Strategy... Exclusives are GOOD for the industry. They drive competition which has always been the lifeblood that drives innovation. If all games are just on every platform it gives no incentive to even to own a particular platform. I don't think Sony will end their exclusive strategy. Sure games come to PC but they release long after they do on consoles by the time the hit PC console owners have already long finished the game.

While the move still feels wrong, reality is both Sony and Microsoft lose money on console sales. Games are where the money is. So the move makes sense, especially when you think about GamePass. I'm not sure why you wouldn't have touched on that part of their strategy. GP is also not going to come to PS... so Xbox still has a certain exclusivity.

Going by Steam charts is not the way fam. Something like 90% of Halo players play on Xbox.

Doesn't affect me in the least. I prefer Xbox, will always. Microsoft may be onto something. I'll start buying more physical copies. Microsoft dont stop making consoles.

Sea of Thieves supposedly sold a million copies, funny how that's a huge success for SoT but would be a flop for a first party game or any other AAA game. Also he knew Indiana Jones was coming to PS5 when he said it wasn't one of those first 4 games, it takes time to port a game.

Also M$ owns a good chunk of the devs and publisher, so they are gonna be setting the price even more so if they buy any more of the industry(becoming the western tencent).

They are a publisher at this point, games cost a ton of money and xbox/gamepass is not big enough to make all of those games exclusive. They have such a big audience on PS and Nintendo so they just can't ignore that. it is funny how people ignore the moves PS is making in places like China, Korea and even India with the hero projects giving them a chance to expand even more in those markets nvm all the stuff Nintendo is doing. Those 2 are not gonna change as drastically as he is trying to make it out to be.

Microsoft have made so many bad decisions with Xbox and it's literally killing them. Phil Spencer keeps saying "We learn't a lot from our mistakes" but in reality they continue to do the exact same thing and continue to make incredibly bad decisions and then are forced to use scumbag slimy business practices to claw back any money they can because they're doing so bad.

I think theyll also focus on more affordable consoles , like the series S , rather than trying to sell their platform as being the most powerful. People want the newest games, but with inflation being as bad as it is, economics are gonna factor into the new strategy. Just my opinion.

Xbox is going the path of Sega. I would be surprised if Microsoft comes out with another console. They might have one more, but that's it.

If gamepass makes its debut on the PlayStation there’s no reason to buy a Xbox in the future. I won’t buy another Xbox console. I just wait for the polished PlayStation version

PC is not a real threat to Sony. Sony throwing a couple ports their ways says nothing about any possible "multi-platform" ambitions.

Oh, a couple techies will go there...way Sony looks at it, wanna pay thousands in yearly upgrades, be my guest 🙂. They know most console gamers will choose them, not PC.

PC ports are just a couple extra dollars, without risking their 67 PERCENT share of high end home console market (Sony and MS, excluding Switch).

A couple of guys like Square Enix are merely escaped hostages 😂. Going against Sony's wishes of complete exclusivity.

I guess I'll be going back to PC. I'm not thrilled about that due to the ridiculous cost of GPUs these days, but I'm done supporting a platform that is nothing more than a walled garden with very few noteworthy exclusives.

Eventually, I'll get to play both Sony and MS' "exclusives" without having to worry about this nonsensical backwards compatibility bullshit.

From what I see, and if my theory is correct, their real strategy hasn’t changed, because Xbox GAME Sudio’s strategy has always seemed to have been mass distribution of their platform. If you think I mean the Xbox console, you aren’t listening to them. Their platform (meaning Microsoft) is software. As in games. They are called Xbox GAME Studios, after all. Xbox console is just a means to access the software/games (their real platform) through game pass via the console or through a Microsoft Windows PC at a discount price, and selling the games at full price to other console users. I think Xbox has been vague about this because they still need Xbox console users to help fund what will ultimately be extremely good for the gaming industry, but more importantly, the gamers.

If you don’t mind paying for a monthly subscription for immediate access for games on day one, get an Xbox or PC. If you just want to purchase the games that appeal to you and not worry about a monthly subscription, get a PlayStation or a PC. As for myself, an Xbox console user, I agree with this vision. After all, gaming is about playing good games. It shouldn’t be about console fans fighting over who has the better paperweight that processes said game (PC is already the winner anyway IMO). It’s time to grow up gammers, and educate the younger gamers who engage in this manner; which only hinders them, the gamer. If Indian Jones comes out as a huge success, I would fight to get the game in the hands of Playstation users as polished, and as soon as possible. That’s because game studio’s that make great games, and do it right SHOULD be rewarded with more sales, and send a message to competitors of what to give the gamers.

I know that was long, but that’s my take on the situation.

I dont get the whole "just buy 'em all" deal 🙂...you're a gaming journalist, it makes sense for you to have every console.

The average gamer? That's ridiculous. You're spending a needless extra $600, plus hundreds in peripherals, when they break down...if you can waste that kind of cash, bless you 🙂

Unless you got WAY too much time on your hands 🙂.. you really only need ONE home console in a generation, and a portable solution (Switch). Why waste an extra thousand dollars or so, because some other console has a couple third parties hostage?

I dont have to buy another smart tv, because content is exclusive to a particular brand 😂! The only thing exclusive is the interface, and hardware features.

Say God of War...if I cant get the same fulfillment in say Dante's Inferno...or Forza instead of Gran Turismo. Every exclusive game on one console has a plethora of knock offs on another 😂! Youre paying an extra $1000 for a SKIN 😂!

I own Tekken 8 and Armored Core 6 for Series X. Namco/Bandai, former Sony stooge 🙂...Strategy gamer now, I still buy games like that on the side...suppose I didn't see those two games on the Series X shelf...well guess what 🙂...the two games would still be sitting on the PS5 shelf collecting dust 😂. Both great games...worth paying Sony's ransom...no...no 🙂...God of War, GT, Last of Us...no...no...if I cant find something similarly fulfilling in Series X/GamePass/Xbox Store...

Sony has made a business pulling off a sale that would make a freezer salesman in Alaska jealous 😂😂! Upwards of $1000, just for an exclusive SKIN 😂😂!!

They have no INCENTIVE, man 😂! The third parties, in unison, decided the result of Sony's first foray, by all going EXCLUSIVE to PS, leaving Sega Saturn to starve a slow death. I dont even think the third parties ever even bothered with Dreamcast 😂! Ridiculous!

A former Sega fanatic, I'm not really caught up to the history of Nintendo, got on board recently for the Marvel Ultimate Alliance exclusive 🙂. One of the minute big exclusives that somehow escaped Sony's clutches 🙂. Nintendo apparently suffered the same fate, mass exodus of third parties to Sony exclusively, having to rely on sporadic IP releases. Nintendo's now no longer a competitor to Sony...

MS has managed to pry more third party support from Sony than anybody...at like 90% actually...still...that sneaky one like Wolverine (Sony only owns SPIDER-MAN universe movie rights) slips through the cracks...

It's worked for Sony! Gamers have the will power of bear in front of a honeycomb 😂! Sony knows they can easily break their will with third party hostages, $500 ransom(600 with tax+warranty) take it or leave it, we'll wait 😂. 2, 3,4 years...

Giving a few to PC, oh, give me a break! That market is not competition! Let me know when Wolverine shows up on Series X or Switch 2 😂!

I’ve been on Xbox since it launched Nov 2001.

It has become a mess.
There’s incredibly poor quality control over the quantity of content regarding games, and filtering the games from DLCs for those games in the game store appears impossible. That’s on top of the fact the industry is saturated with bad games requiring paywalls and content renewal purchases bc game companies take advantage of EULA restrictions.

For the last five years, I’ve bought 4 games.

Consumers are strong armed into low industry standard games bc better standards are harder and harder to find.

Microsoft has a quality control problem regarding the very large majority of what they market on top of the fact they themselves DONT put out anything even remotely decent short term.

They are severely out of touch with their consumers.

In simple terms Microsoft is going full multi-plat their letting the Xbox console go. And to be honest it’s all because they sucked from the beginning it’s just been terrible idea after terrible idea all by design. Sarah Bond has lead this company into the ground. Phil has failed but they don’t want to look accountable or like they’ve let the fans down. They know the power in words and are choosing their words carefully because anything can trigger the fan base.

They are a business, he’s right. At the end of the day they will only be loyal to the money, if that is in exclusives and what fans want, they will be all for that… but if the money is in expanding out to other platforms and going against what fans want, they will follow the money regardless.

Phil Spencer: xbox always was about third party games, exclusives never matter, this was our mentality since xbox one.
