Play 7000 PC DOS games quickly and easily (eXoDOS Review)

by admin

The eXoDOS project is like a digital Noah’s Ark for DOS games, meticulously rescuing and preserving thousands of PC classics from the treacherous seas of obsolescence. Imagine a pixelated Indiana Jones, armed not with a whip but with an external hard drive, bravely navigating the dusty catacombs of abandonware to unearth treasures like “Commander Keen” and “William Shatner’s TekWar”.

618 gigs😅

So, 638gb is the equivalent of 319,000 standard 2mb floppy disks, which are about 4mm tall. Stacked up would be a 4186ft tall tower, about 1.2km 😂

Love DOS games. This is really awesome

I've got it torrenting now. I'm actually getting a little frustrated with genuine retro hardware. There's a Pentium Windows 98 PC in a corner of my office that just has issue upon issue, and sometimes I just want to play some Descent without having to fight with it. My plan is to dedicate a mini-PC with a 2 TB hard drive to eXoDOS on that very setup sitting on top of the retro machine, maybe with a KVM switch to toggle between them. I've even already got a CRT there, so I won't need to use the filters. I'll just need an adapter.

A neat thing with LaunchBox (the Emulator that eXoDOS uses) is that you can make your own playlist categorizing games in whatever genre or title you want. I made my first one recently for adventure games, adding Beneath a Steel Sky and Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller as an aperitif.

DOSBox Staging maintainer here. Great video! Just a small bit of extra info: eXoDOS uses DOSBox Staging under the hood for the auto CRT shaders. It's a Staging feature, you'll many examples of the shaders on our homepage. And yes, it was a lot of work, mostly by yours truly 🙂

does it support online play?

Lots of classics I have owned over the years on here. Most of these I had issues running before run great. Pango was a mess though. What is great is the multiple versions are all in one. The disk, cd-rom, and different graphics and sound card options right at the launcher.
Stellar 7, Space Quest IV, Ultrabots, and also Jurassic Park running at the correct speed which I could never make happen through DosBox. This is a massive treasure!

I use retrobat as my frontend, does it work with it?

@rickr8328 September 29, 2024 - 6:38 pm

Raptor is awesome! I actually did play it back in the day but I had totally forgotten about it until I saw it here. Nostalgia!

Excellent thank you sir

This is great! I have a lot of these already like Tekwar, doom and much more. So glad I found this channel.

this Light version is a life-saver. Really.

@HelenMaxwellfan September 29, 2024 - 6:38 pm

I heard Resulka talking about this and saw her using it on her live streams.
I'm going to need this. Maybe I can play my physical copy of Ripper without any issues. Christopher Walken is hilarious in that game.
I have several old games I will enjoy playing.

I was playing raptor: call of the shadows today! I first played it because it came along on my duke nukem 3d cd.

They also have more like eXoWin3x, eXoScummVM, eXoDREAMM, eXoAppleIIGS. Think there might be some unofficial ones to. Amiga and stuff would have been nice.

Thank you for reccomending this. I have downloaded and set up quite simple and bought back alot of early memories. Thank you. Also what got you into console gaming over PC in later years. I'm also torn between pc and console I love xbox ecosystem but also love the smoothness of pc and library of games. Cheers 🍻

I had no idea of this, thanks for bringing attention to it! Downloading it now, finally upgraded to a gigabit fibre connection recently and was hoping the torrent would be better seeded to make the most of it but I guess I'll have to wait a day lol

@quizzer September 29, 2024 - 6:38 pm

@christianf.4833 September 29, 2024 - 6:38 pm
