It’s fascinating to see how the original concept of Puzzle Bubble has evolved over the years, with countless variants introducing unique twists and enriching the gameplay. One such variant that has captured my attention is the HTML5 game Balloons Rhombics. This game stands out in the bubble shooter genre due to its unconventional yet brilliant gameplay.
Instead of the typical setup of hanging horizontal lines of bubbles against a dark blue background, Balloons Rhombics features a rhombus pattern of multi-colored, bubble-shaped balloons nestled among rows of gray hexagons. Each side of the rhombus contains four rows, and players aim and shoot projectile balloons from the center of the shape toward the balloons in these rows, aiming to clear all the bubbles using the fewest moves possible.
In Balloons Rhombics, each colored projectile appears sequentially at the center of the rhombus and releases a line of tiny targeting bubbles in pulses. These bubbles start large and shrink as they move outward. Players use their cursor to aim, and instead of the match-3 mechanics typical of other bubble shooters, they can pop single balloons or clusters of connected balloons.
This game also introduces avalanche play. Unlike traditional bubble shooters where bubbles below a popped line or cluster disappear regardless of color, in this game, players can create avalanches with bubbles closest to the center of the shape.
Additional features include a preview of the next projectile in the lower-left corner and the display of the number of moves used in the upper-left corner.
To play effectively, review the interior rows to find bubble balloons matching the current projectile. Aim the projectile at a bubble linked to the largest cluster of matching bubbles. To maximize bubble removal, aim between two matching clusters.
