The Cubs make it back-to-back wins over the Nationals with a 3-1 victory over Washington at Wrigley Field on Friday. Jameson Taillon got the start for the Cubs, picked up his 11th win of the season after his fourth straight quality start.

The veteran also echoed Craig Counsell’s comments from yesterday about the gap between the Cubs and the Brewers and how the Cubs need to focus on closing it by building 90-win (at least) teams.

Dansby Swanson clubbed his 16th home run of the season to keep his strong second half going.

Cubs are officially eliminated from playoffs

NO OFFENSE

Dansby suck bro, what are you talking about?
It was a big mistake giving the laidback multimillionaire contract to who is fat and lazy in his cranium He is not a leader, I know a leader!
Please do not used the word leader so loosely.

Cubs screwed smokies. We had the best AA record in baseball. They took Alcantara, Shaw and Triantos to a AAA team that sucks and was it out it for the year. Winning breeds more winning. Hoyer needs to be fired.

I think if our manager and middle of the rotation starter both think the 90 wins is the goal. We have a culture of losers.

The best teams of baseball are all shooting for 100 wins each season

If that’s not the goal, then we’re just a big market team shooting to fill the stands and fail in the standings

Hopefully this is the clubhouse starting to call out the front office a bit for not making some more shrewd moves, and constantly making safe moves. They’re right, an 85 win season where you barely squeak into the playoffs should be a full fledged disappointment of a year

If the Cubs can trade Swanson this off-season, I’m all for it.

I think the biggest problem is that Jed and ownership do not appear to agree with CC and his comments the other day. They know the fans will come out if the team is anywhere near contention. So why even try to improve the roster. Really did not improve the roster last off-season. Why should we believe he will this time? It should not take him being a lame duck to do anything. And the ownership owns this until they make a serious move to address all of it.

Cubs need a 300+ hitter. Thought Cody would be that hitter. If you have that kind of
hitter it will probably pull up other players in the lineup and improve their averages.

Bullpen’s failures were critical this season and account for a significant part of the team’s failure. Also far too many unproductive at bats in key situations that end up stranding runners in scoring position over and over again, including way too many strikeouts. We need some better clutch hitters than what we have – plain and simple.

Thanks Anthony! In order to become a serious contender in 25' here are my thoughts:
1. Counsel needs to bring in his own coaches.
2. Sign a staring catcher who is good on offense and defense. FA or trade
3. Trade or FA for a 30hr 100 player.
4. Trade for or free agent bonifide closer and set up guys.
5. Change approach with runners in scoring position.
6. Sign/trade for top of rotation SP.
The Cubs have tons of $$$ coming off the books this year.

I really liked both the comments Counsell and Taillon made recently. Seems everyone in the clubhouse on a daily basis is on the same page. Next step is getting ownership and the front office on that same page which will likely be easier said than done.

Another great report Ant. I'll miss the daily game recaps and analysis during the offseason but will be Tubing in when y'all post. 😄

@thehappyhermit01 September 22, 2024 - 3:19 am

How many wins were the Cubs predicted to have this season? 84? 85? They'll be close to that. And the Mets, the likely winner of the 3rd wild card spot, might finish with 90 wins. Has the winner of the 3rd wild card ever had 90 wins before?

@steveburlo8010 September 22, 2024 - 3:19 am

Cubs could have been in playoffs if they would have had a closer . Especially when leading games

@knleonhart September 22, 2024 - 3:19 am

The Cubs build momentum until they step on a rake every time they’re about to break through

@scottemory72 September 22, 2024 - 3:19 am

Jordan Wicks looked very out of shape coming in this year; his spare tire was alarming. Hopefully, he can recover from his injuries and get into shape. I really like that kid and the Cubs need him.
