Green Hell: Spirits of Amazonia is the perfect balance. There aren't many survival games that have a decent story, and those that do typically task you with finding a wife, child, or someone else of equal importance. This always kinda ruins immersion for me because if my immediate family is missing, I'm not gonna go spend a week chopping down dozens of trees to build a fully furnished treehouse.
People complaining the The Long Dark is boring: how? IтАЩm 600+ hours in and so far IтАЩve found it challenging, serene, and well balanced, but never boring. If youтАЩre bored, try a higher difficulty level. YouтАЩll have plenty to do if you want to survive.
feel like after no 8 we got a little sidetracked…7 and 6 wasnt even 1st person taking real away from it and we introduce 5 as "its not somuch a realistic sruvival game" whats with the title then lol
Absolutely love the realism that comes with Green Hell. Makes for an absolute brutal game if you want it to be. But I think my overall favorite survival game would have to be RimWorld. I'm normally a pretty vanilla person when it comes to gaming but RimWorld is one of the few games that got me invested in playing a game with mods. RimWorld is already a fun and engrossing game by itself…but with mods…just about ANYTHING is possible in a game that already gives you a fair amount to do already.
Medieval Dynasty and Ancestors are quite fun and once I open one of the games, I play way too much.
Medieval Dynasty is a little grindy and collecting resources before each season ends becomes the main focus until you have enough villagers who do the jobs in a balanced manner, if they had more maps it would be even better. Kinda like living in Witcher era but without all the monsters, just being a human.
Ancestors should be played on a controller, the keyboard controls are a little confusing and more difficult to do timed things while you are going insane from giant pythons, big cats, and in an unknown area. The map is actually HUGE and takes a lot of work, climbing and many centuries to explore while leading your troop of pre-humans to do what you need them to do. The only thing the developer missed out on with Ancestors is adding enemy pre-humans to compete with, fight, have territory issues with, and maybe gain members from instead of finding them in random places all alone every time.
If you want a challenging survival experience, be able to climb trees, with a decent depth of interacting with things around you and progress and adapt to many different biomes, Ancestors is awesome. More animal survival games need to be like this.
It's not as difficult as The Long Dark though. If you use caution and curiosity in Ancestors in the right combination, you will succeed, but that same attitude in The Long Dark usually gets you killed. Honestly The Long Dark you're going to die a lot before you begin to understand and master it.
Thing about the forest is u can take alot of time to build an awsome camp, just for it to be destroyed by the big dudes

It was originally meant to be a mod for Minecraft, but the dev decided to make it its own game
So it looks a lot like Minecraft but it's actually an ultra realistic survival game (well if you count the Steampunk eldrich horrors as realistic, because yes there's also this, and the world has a ton of lore about it scattered around in ruins)
And damn that game is unforgiving
You start with nothing, all the way back to the stone age where you can do nothing but collect rocks and cut grass and you have to work hard to get better tools and everything
Add to that the wolves and bears that are fucking terrifying since day 1 and also the monsters that dwell in the depths and spawn in hordes during "temporal storms"
You also have some sort of sanity meter called "temporal stability" that will deplete when close to these Steampunk eldrich horrors, make more abd more monsters spawn when it gets low and when it's depleted well you don't want to know what happens

Like you said, most games depicts war through the eyes of a soldier. Showing it through the eyes of a civilian is a perfect setting for survival genre.
